1. *Alison Mitchell Dalrymple 58,168,1231,1232,1233,1234,1235,1236 Marriage: 22 Feb 1851 - Slamannan, Stirling, Scotland 1613 Marriage Notes
201121:Children: 1. William Webster 2. Hugh Webster 3. John Webster 4. Helen McLay Webster 5. Mary Laing Webster 6. Thomas Webster
It should be noted that although there are many instances where this marriage is presumed to have taken place (e.g. Alison's subsequent marriage to William Aitken, the death record of Alison and some of the children attributed to William, etc.) there is no record of the marriage either in the civil or church registers available on Scotland's People. Nor is there any indication of birth records for the first children, including William and Hugh. It seems to lead to the conclusion that they never actually married or if they did so it was after having had several children out of wedlock.
Notes
General:
110906:
There are problems with the date of death because several children were supposed to have been born well after this date. Needs to be researched.
220910:
I discovered that Alison was living with her family of 6 children at the home of her brother Robert and his family in the 1861 Census. This would seem to indicate that her husband was dead at the time.
201121:
I have reason to doubt that William Webster and Alison Dalrymple were ever legally married. Scotland's People holds all existing civil and church records of Births, Marriages and Deaths and there is no sign of a marriage record for them. What is more, there is no sign of a birth record for the first three of their children. William Webster is mentioned as the father on the birth records of the next three children, but though he is said to have been the informant for the birth of one of one of them, the record shows that he was "not present". After his death, Alison went on to have four more children all of whom were registered as illegitimate births. She reverted to her maiden name for these four birth registrations so the children were referred to by that name and only later did she adopt the name of the deceased partner even though he clearly was not the father of those children.
No family lore has come down to explain these anomalies. It seems like the kind of thing that the family would have wanted to cover up.

Notes
General:
230910: Only the four youngest boys were at home for the 1851 census. Isabella may have been in service elsewhere at the time and the older children were already on their own presumably, including William Jr.
160117:
On his death certificate it shows his wife's name as Mary Leishman, not Mary Laing. Apparently after Mary Laing died sometime prior to her son William's death in 1860, William senior remarried a woman named Mary Leishman. I never knew this before and neither did Aunt Jean.
In the 1841 census a child had just been born who bore no name. This child did not appear on the 1851 census and hence most likely died an infant, possibly never named.

Notes
General:
201121:
Note that there is no civil or church record of the birth of this person. Together with other anomalies in regard to the regularity of the relationship between his supposed parents, it seems likely that they never actually married and thus the births of most of their children were never registered.
