The Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment was sent to Newfoundland to support the Royal Newfoundland Companies which were seriously depleted in numbers. Ultimately the latter group was embraced into the ranks of the former before leaving Newfoundland altogether in 1862, the last British garrison in the colony.
