I noted that in the marriage record it showed Mary's mother's maiden name as "Mitchell". I wrote to Karen Chapman to see if she could resolve this conflict by consulting her mother's notes. This is what she wrote back:

"1st question, Mary and James Marriage record with Mitchell as a maiden name for Allison instead of Dalrymple. This is directly contradictory to the death record of Mary Laing Minty. It lists her parents as William Webster, Cabinetmaker? And Allison Mitchell Aitkin, previously Webster M.S. Dalrymple. Source: Death Register kept at the General Registry Office in Edinburgh. Provided by the Scots Ancestral Society. See attached document. From the same registry we see, the confirmation and deaths of children listing William Webster and Allison Dalrymple as parents. Children in this case are William, John, Hugh."

Apparently the clerk who entered the marriage record confused her mother's middle name as her actual maiden name.

250416 (ANZAC Day): Noted that on her early pedigree charts Aunt Jean had their year of marriage as 1875 (correct year is 1878) but the month and day correct. Not sure whether that was just a transcription error on her part or if she had found a reference that mistakenly gave that year.

General:
Details are confused. Date of birth could have been 20 Jan. 1859 and place could have been one of several quoted locations.

The group photo in the scrapbook is a copy of the original which is now in the possession of Karen Funkhouser Chapman. It was given to her mother, Jean Morry Funkhouser, by Dad Morry (Howard Leopold Morry). The caption on the back, which was evidently written by Elizabeth Christine (Chris) Minty Taylor details several of the children by name. But I am not convinced it identifies them correctly. The difference in the ages of Fredris and her siblings makes it near impossible that the eldest girl in this photo would have been her eldest sister Alice (Allison). Alice was born in 1879 and Fredris in 1895, a difference of 16 years. Thus, when this photo was taken, the littlest girl, who very likely is my grandmother Fredris, would have been about two or three, while the eldest girl in the photo could have been no more than10 or 12,or a span of about 10 years at maximum. Therefore I believe that the girls in the photo are actually (in order of increasing age) Fredris, Ellen (Nellie), Elizabeth and Mary. Further evidence of this is that James, the boy in the photo, was born in 1884. Thus he was only 11 years older than Fredris. In this photo he appears to be in his early teens, which would be about right. Assuming Alice was 18 or 19 when the photo was taken, it is very likely she was already working and out on her own and thus would not have been included in the family portrait.

220910: I downloaded her birth record from Scotland's people website. It took three tries because it turns out there were two other Mary Laing Websters born close to her in time and space who appear to be first cousins of hers. Moreover, though we now know her name was Mary Laing Webster, only Mary Webster appears on her birth record and that is how she was recorded in Aunt Jean's research notes. That is why searches for her using the full name Mary Laing Webster turned up her cousins but not her.

It is worthy of note that Dad Morry reported in his memoirs that he was able to get away from Stob's Camp to be beside his mother in law at the moment of her death. He reports that her last words to him were: "Be good to my little bairn" to which he replied: "When I see you on the other side I will be able to look you right in the face" after which she smiled and died in less than a minute.

I downloaded the birth record of this Mary Laing Webster from Scotland's People thinking that it must be the Mary Laing Webster who was mother of Mom Morry. Apparently it was a cousin by the same name.

The transcript of this birth record on FindMyPast, borrowed from FamilySearch, is not as complete as the birth record itself. For example, the image of the birth record purchased from Scotland's people appears to indicate that her mother's name was Jane Webster and that Webster was both her married name and her maiden name. This information is not found in the transcript. It also shows the father's occupation as coal miner and in addition gives their marriage date and place as June 9, 1854 in Hamilton. Why FamilySearch would have omitted such valuable information, which helps to distinguish this couple from any other with similar names is hard to fathom.
