BARNABLE, Sister Mary Dorothea Passed peacefully away at Presentation Convent, Cathedral Square, St. John's, on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, Sister Mary Dorothea Barnable, in her 92nd year. Predeceased by herparents, James and Gertrude Barnable; brothers: Matthew, Henry, Herbert, Joseph and John; sisters: Philomena and Sara. Left to mourn: the Presentations Sisters, Mary McGrath (Richard deceased), Stan (Frances) Barnable, Dorothy (Bernard) Agriesti; sister-in-law Margaret Barnable,loving and devoted nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, other relatives and friends. Went to USA and lost contact with her. Never married. Death record found in a Boston newspaper she was 44 years old at the tine of her death

Mary arrived in Boston 11/29/1867 on the Brig "Chedabucto" in steerage, also from Newfoundland, no occupation given. In 1884 Mary died of scarlet fever at age 29. Parents James and Catherine all from St. John's, Newfoundland

The age at death and date of death imply she was born in 1840, not 1855 as shown on Don's website. But it seems unlikely she was born that long before her siblings so more likely the information that she was 44 at the time of death is in error. So I accept second information giving her age at time of death as 29.

I have chosen to include this gravestone and the data on it as representing Josephine Barnable Furlong even though the name on the stone is Mary J. Furlong mainly because the stone matches the one for William J. Furlong and I assume that I have found the correct William since this is the only William Furlong in the cemetery. It's a bit tenuous and needs verification.

In her book "Over The Fence", Laura Morry Williams teels a story about "Jose" Furlong. Apparently she went to see the doctor one time when tuberculosis was prevalent in Ferryland in 1936 but only had a bad cough. The doctor recommended bed rest, and she used that as an excuse to never leave her bed again, having all her family look after her. She spent the remaining 32 years of her life in bed though there was nothing wrong with her. The last physician to attend to her before her death is reported to have claimed: "There was never any need for her to have stayed in bed."

I foound this obituary in the Evening Telegram on April 5, 1968, whilst doing some lookups for Dave Wells. He had mistakenly indentified her by her married name rather than her maiden name.

FURLONG -- Passed peacefully away, at Ferryland, on Wednesday, March 27th, after an illness of 34 years, Mrs. Mary Josephine 9nee Barnable) Furlong, in her 79th year. She leaves to mourn her husband, William; two daughters, Josephine (Mrs. Francis Condon) of Calvert, Mary (Mrs. Thomas Keough) of Ferryland; and three sons, John, Philip and Eric, all of Ferryland; also a large host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives and friends. She was buried, with Requiem Mass, on Thursday, March 28th, at 3:30 p.m. at Ferryland. (104).
