I have attached a picture of an embroidery sampler done in 1822 by Ann Coryear before she married and became a Carew. I had no idea who this woman might be but in time before I moved to the States for five years I had seen this sampler and wondered who she could be? Since then I have found out that she was my great great great grandmother and this sampler has been handed down through Esther Graham Morry & Henry Carew to Annie (Carew) McNamara & John McNamara and then through my grandparents George & Winnifred McNamara. My mother, my brother (Terry), and I moved home from Dallas when my parents split up in 1966 ( I was two at the time) and we lived with my grandparents until they died. All the old pictures, books and memorabilia I have comes from my grandparents George and Wynn.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Enid and she has come to my house and seen my sampler, books and pictures....she was very helpful and actually found out what the missing text is on the sampler. It goes like this

Nor wilt thou dear that lily's white in thy complexion find Yet innocence may shine as fair within thy spotless mind

This was a portion of some verses a man named Mr. Coale wrote to Sarah Carey and they bore the date January 23rd, 1803. Apparentley these verses were published in the Philadelphia Free Press at the time.

240212: Enid O'Brien corrected the information I had on date of death and age at death which I had gotten from the Stonepics gravestone image. Enid indicates that the correct information was given in the Evening Telegram obituary.

" Coryear Carew's date of death on her headstone is not correct. She died Jan 18/1889, age 81 and not 19/2/1888, age 74 yrs as on her headstone (Ref. Evening Telegram),"

Re your email about the Coryear's.

Anna was the daughter of Henry Coryear (ref. will). Henry was married to Eleanor Morrissey (and not Elizabeth) as stated on the 1800 census. This is well documented in birth records and court records.

I saw the piece written in the Cape Broyle 'Come Home Year' book but this is folklore written by Jim Joe O'Brien. He probably thought Anna was John's daughter as Henry died in 1845 and they all lived in the one area, being brothers.

The Coryears were from Abbottskerwell in Devon. In the old records this is sometimes spelled "Courrier". I suspect further back they are probably French descent but it would be back at least to the 1600. I guess they could be from the Channel Islands. I note some of the names "Renor" "Louis" even "Henry" might have come from Henri but I can only say they were from England. They christened their male children in the Church of England and the female children RC.

Henry also lived in Dartmouth for a time. I have a copy of some business transactions for him there. They owned large tracts of land in Shore's Cove and around the Harbour in Cape Broyle.

There are a few pockets of English people in Cape Broyle, ie, the Carews, Coryears, Harvey, Hawkins, Harterys, etc.

There is an Indenture/Deed in the Southern District Court Records at the Registry of Deeds in St. John's, of which I have a poor photocopy, which shows that on November 10, 1821 Henry Coryear essentially mortgaged his entire propery to John Teague of Dartmouth for the sum of 330 Pounds Sterling. While the document makes it appear that this was a bill of sale, there are many documents of this kind in the Court records and they appear to be rather promissory notes or mortgages to obtain a loan needed to stay in existence. They often, but not always, contain a clause indicating that if the money is repaid (with interest?) by a certain date that all bets are off. This document contained such a provision and gives a date five years hence. The fact that the document was registered at the Court on December 3 1827, six years later, seems to imply that the debt remained unpaid and may have been at risk of being called in by John Teague. I do not know the outcome of this situation. It may be that Henry defaulted on the loan and lost his property, explaining why he later became the constable in Cape Broyle.

Also at the Registry of Deeds in the Southern District Court records, Volume 2, there is a grant of 6 small pieces of land to Henry Coryear in various parts of Cape Broyle. It isn't clear why he chose or indeed why he needed all of these unconnected parcels of land. A transcript of that grant is also found in the Media Gallery but because of the poor quality of the photocopy from which it is made many words had to be quessed at or left out altogether.

I sent Enid O'Brien a copy of the alternate baptism record which I have enclosed in this Henry's data but she is pretty sure that record does not belong to her immigrant ancestor. This is her rationale:

I had a look at your original document and like everything else in record books there are always discrepancies. My interpretation of your original record is as follows: "September ye 10,1766 Henry Mitchal the son of John and Mary Coryear of Hatchlan was baptised".I couldn't find a place called Hatchlan. Also, even though the date looks like 1766 to me the next date is1769 so I suspect '1768' is correct.

A researcher gave me an individual record (probably obtained from Ancestry) and I suspect it is the same record which you sent but it is as follows: Henery Michal Coryear, Sex M, Christening 18 Sept 1768, Rattery, Devon, England. Parents: Father John Coryear, Mother Mary. Source information Batch no. 6051541 Dates 1609-1837. Source Call No. 0916929 Note dates and town.

In the Court Records of the Southern district on 15 March 1797 I found Henry Coryear sued Pat Magee for refusing to serve in the ensuing summer fishery contrary to agreement. Magee was shipped in January. His father, William, took the papers to the defendant a few days later. He refused to serve (he had been offered 23 pounds for the summer). The Court orders him to serve and Magee refused and was committed to the gaol. So according to this record Henry's father is William Coryear.

I looked at some Muster Rolls for William Coryear on NL vessels and I found the following

There were other William Coryears from Abbotskerwell but would be too young to be the father of Henry.

Anyway, I have a lot of loose ends with the Coryears but alI I can say is that Henry appears to have been born in 1765 and died 2/7/1845 (Robert Carter's Diary). Also, as he borrowed money from John Teague in Dartmouth he would have to be known there as money was loaned readily in those days. Also,he was an agent for Richard Hutchings in Cape Broyle. I feel that they are related to Capt John Coryear from Harbour Grace (probably a cousin). I think Henry's daughter, Mary, married Arthur Thomey from Harbour Grace.

There are several cases involving Henry Coryear in the annals of the Southern Circuit Court at Ferryland. Since father and son had the same name and the cases do not refer to Sr. or Jr. it is not certain that it was the father who was involved but on balance I believe this to be the case.

061023:
Robert Carters Journal for 1840 reports that in November of that year a boat owned by Coryear went missing on a trip from St. John's with two of his sons and 2 other men lost. This is the first I have ever heard of this incident and there is nothing in my family tree file to indicate that he even had 2 sons lost at sea.
