From - The Wellsboro Gazette, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. July 24 to August 3, 2013 Sheila Barlow - 69, of Clarion, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loved ones. Sheila was born to the late Henry and Elizabeth Barnable in Calvert, Newfoundland, Canada. She was an islander at heart and introduced many a friend to the rugged, natural beauty of her Canadian home. Foremost, Sheila was a beloved mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend to all in need. She touched many lives. She will be remembered for her compassion, spirit and infectious laughter. She had a zeal for life and an adventurous spirit. She loved traveling, cooking, playing cards, skiing and jokes. After an eight-year battle with Alzehimer's, her body succumbed to the disease, but her unbreakable Spirit endured. She is our rock and will be forever. Sheila was the consummate health care professional. After graduating from St. Clare's Hospital's School of Nursing in St. John's, NF she started her career as a labor delivery nurse in St. John, New Brunswick, also then worked in Vancouver, British Columbia and Wellsboro. Later, Sheila returned to school and transitioned into teaching nursing. She graduated from Clarion University's first Bachelor of Science in Nursing class and continued her studies, completing a Master's of Science in Nursing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. She was an associate professor in the nursing department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania when she retired in 2003. In her professional capacity, she traveled and did research, but her first call was mentoring and nourishing her students whom she trained in local area hospitals. She is survived by her husband, Arthur H. Barlow; children, Maegon, Chris and his wife Joy Yan, Shannon and her husband Mark Flanagan; grandchildren, Morgan, Connor, Rowan; her sister, Bernice Piche; brothers, Wayne, Terry, James; her Uncle Stan and Aunt Frances; sister-in-law, Mildred Gesualdo; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood St., in Clarion, where a visitation will be held Friday, July 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass will be held for Sheila at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 27, at the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Clarion with Fr. Monty Sayers as celebrant. The family is also planning a memorial service for Sheila in Ferryland, Newfoundland, the third week of August. BARNABLE Stanley Francis April 18, 1928 -July 22, 2020 It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our father, Stan Barnable at the age of 92. Dad was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and great great uncle. He was the last of 11 children of the late James and Gertrude (O'keefe) Barnable. Dad was predeceased by brothers, Matt, Henry, Herb, Joe and Jack, and sisters Philomena, Sr. Dorothea, Sara, Mary and Dorothy. His parents and siblings were extraordinary people who were all a tremendous influence in the man our father became. Dad married Frances, daughter of John and Anne (Lovett) Thorne. They met and fell in love in 1953. She was the love of his life and he was always by her side. They went on to have us, their three sons, Steve, Paul, and Roger. Dad taught us early on the importance of family, hard work, and dedication. He worked at NFLD Minerals (talc mine) in Manuels, retiring as manager in 1993. Despite his busy work life, he was actively involved in our lives and ensured we had the opportunity to play hockey and other sports. He would drive us to practices and lessons and he never complained, that wasn't his nature. He would proudly watch us from the stands, silently cheering. He continued to be a fan cheering on his grandchildren Matthew (Sueha), Thomas, Robyn (Trevor), Olivia, Kyle, Keeley, and Meaghan. For many years, our family spent most of our summers in Dad's favourite place on earth, Ferryland. There we were surrounded by Barnable aunts, uncles and cousins. Every weekend all the Barnable's , could be found in the "old house", sitting around the kitchen table playing cards, especially when the Barlows arrived. Dad loved sports, coaching senior and minor hockey, but was best known for coaching the senior Ferryland Flyers. In his younger years, he took boxing lessons. While living in Mount Pearl, Dad became actively involved in the tennis club and he loved beating any younger players who would dare to play him, including his sons. He loved it so much he played into his 80's! He was also an avid painter, sketcher and sculptor. He could often be found up behind the old house whittling wood to make boats that he gave away to any of the children. Like his siblings, Dad was known for his artistic talents, in particular his "real life" paintings. Mom and Dad loved to travel and went to Europe and other places. Dad was a man of great integrity. He always gave the best of himself to everyone and always dropped that humorous line; gave a smile and acknowledged others, showing that these were the most important things in life, even when it was the hardest thing for him to do. He listened, he shared and passed on the simple most meaningful truths of life. He was free from judgement. He enjoyed and loved people as much as they loved him. He was constant in these qualities that were passed down to him and did his best to ensure that they live on in all of us. While we, Steven (Shari), Paul (Alexia), and Roger (Dolores) mourn the loss of our father, we are grateful that he was able to live with our mother at Tiffany Village until the end. Aunt Marg and Dad will be missed around Tiffany. He loved socializing with his friends and going down to play a game of cards and for a muffin and coffee. Mom, is eternally grateful for the life they had together, all their rich experiences and there could not have been a better man for her to share her life with. Dad was predeceased by baby girl Suzanne. Leaving to mourn brothers in law Robert Thorne and Bernard Agriesti and sister in law Bertha Thorne, as well as nieces and nephews who he cherished dearly. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, funeral arrangements and a celebration of life are pending. The love and smiles we shared will never end.

Notes
General:
From David Wells' Barnable Genealogy sent to me 251106:

Mr. Stan Barnable was born on April 18, 1928 in the small out-port town of Ferryland NF. When he was seventeen he moved to St. Johns to begin a career; and resides to this very day. Once the manager of a Pryophllite mine, Mr. Barnable has since retired and now spends his time playing tennis and painting. Being an avid painter and sculptor, Mr.Barnable relates this urge to create back to when he received his very first pocket knife from his sister at the age of eight. He recalls instantly having a fetish for carving, as he would spend hours forming tiny boats from any discarded piece of wood available. To this day he still carries around a pocket knife and attributes a certain amount of hand skill and craft to that little present years ago.

Coming of age at the time of the second world war, Mr. Barnable recalls the overseas conflict as having a tremendous effect on everyday life. With seemingly no end to the war in sight, he like most boys in hiscommunity felt that a career in the military was to be his calling. "It was just the way it was" he said "you simply thought it was expected of you; your duty if you like, to help out in some way from enlisting in the navy to contributing in the forestry unit." With so much attention focused on the war and events abroad, a sort of education took place. As horizons were broadened and a greater understanding of the world around developed. "We would learn of all sorts of geographical locations and political goings on, that of which we would never have heard of were it not for the war."

Along with the war came a particular experience which sticks out in his mind. One day while out fishing with his father and four others, they proceeded to travel out further than usual to a point where the oceans swell was too great for the modest fishing vessel. Regardless of the impending danger they continued to fish until they came upon a substantial amount of debris floating about in the water. A ship somewherehad obviously been wrecked and taking the initiative the men commenced in looking around for possible survivors which they could help bring to shore. After searching the waters to no avail they decided to turn home and were later to find that the ship had been torpedoed by a German sub off the coast of Cape Race ; with all crew on board going down with the ship.

It is undeniable that the times in which Mr. Barnable has experienced, will forever be instilled in the mind-set of generations to come. From the turmoil of the second World War, to the envelope pushing sixties, to the evolution of the computer age. He has indeed lived in a very exciteing time in human history and has thereby made himself into an important comodity for future social events in mankinds ever changing destiny in time.
