I really don't know what to make of the marriage or marriages of Esther Barnable. Newfoundland's Grand Banks transcripts show a marriage to James Meade on January 7, 1879. But there are no children emanating from this marriage. And Don Lopes shows a marriage to Stephen Meade on 7 Jan 1889, a decade later, but this marriage does not appear in the NGB transcripts. That said, their transcripts do show two sons born of the marriage between Stephen Meaded and Esther Barnable, Stephen and Peter James. There births are on dates that conform to a marriage early in 1889, and there would be no way they were the product of a marriage a decade earlier that showed no other children in the meantime.

Short of going back to look at the original church registers, something virtually impossible to do, I don't know how this mystery will be solved.

After much deliberation and checking of records of marriage and births, I have concluded that there is an error in the transcript of the baptism of Stephen Joseph meade which gives his father's name as Stephen, It should be James. because of this error I, and others including Don Lopes, had two husbands for Esther Barnable, James (for whom a marriage record exists) and Stephen (for whom one does not exist). Therefore today I have merged this false Stephen into James Meade and thereby have made him the rightful father of both Peter James Meade and Stephen Joseph Meade.

But the only Esther Barnable I know of born in the village at about that time was Bill's 1st cousin, the daughter of his uncle Richard, and I'll bet this was she.

According to Steve Barnable, there is no mistake on the two having the same surname. Bill was from the Northside family and Esther from the Southside. They would have been cousins, but very remote.

Email from David Wells 251106: Tombstone reads - Guy Francis, son of Henry & Elizabeth Barnable, died 7 March 1953; 6 mos.

070513: However he is also commemorated on his mother's gravestone and there it gives very different dates: Sept 16 1949 - Mar 7 1950. This would also have been 6 months old. I have no idea why there is such a discrepancy unless she had two sons by the same name both of whom died at 6 months of age. More likely the first stone was made in error and rather than try to have it changed the correct dates were given on the mother's gravestone. I'm going with that theory and changing the dates today.
