When James Phelan married Julia Barry on 2 September 1856 in St. Francis' Church, Melbourne his mother is recorded as Catherine McLoughlin. The record was later transferred to St. Patrick's Cathedral. I have a copy of a transcript of this marriage received from the Cathedral dated 14 February 1986. Julia shown as age 25, therefore probably born 1831. James age 34, therefore born 1822. Marriage Notes

General:
280714 information from David Stevens' family tree file:
The WHELAN and the COOPER families apparently only lived about 5 miles apart in Tipperary however Julia and James first met in Melbourne at a church. [I believe he meant the BARRY family as that was her maiden name]
Possibly arrived in Melbourne on the Reliance 19 March 1850 shown as Judy age 22.
Was 'in service' when she met and married James WHELAN in Melbourne.
Arrived NZ c1864 (death certificate in NZ 43 years).
Extract from husband's Will; "I direct that my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid as soon as may be after my decease, I give and bequeath unto my dear wife JULIA the whole of my personal estate.
I give and devise unto my said wife for the term of her natural life the parcels of land fronting Great North Rd Auckland being twenty four (24) feet of Lot 2 and twelve feet (12) of lot 3 of our subdivision of allotment seventeen (17), section 7 with the dwelling house hereon".
Died of senile decay, sudden heart failure. It is believed she was walking down Commercial Road when she died; this would be near her residence.
The Catholic register has Julia Phelan buried 22 August 1907 aged 80 years of Great North Road. The Little's funeral records at Auckland City Libraries have her died 20 August 1907 and buried in Symonds Street Cemetery.

• Minister/Priest: Thomas J. H. Bridge, M.A., 20 Sep 1842, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
• Witnesses: James Barter, John Morry ?, 20 Sep 1842, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. There was hesitancy on the part of the transcriber of the record as seen on the NGB website as to whether the second witness was John Morry or not. I have only seen the vital statistic version and have not seen the register so cannot say one way or the other. On the vital statistics record it certainly does appear to be John Morry.
But it is noted that Thomas Morry was an executor of the will of Jonas Barter so there seems to be a family connection, at least via business. Marriage Notes
