Marriage Events

• Minister/Priest: Thomas J. H. Bridge, M.A., 20 Sep 1842, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

• Witnesses: James Barter, John Morry ?, 20 Sep 1842, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. There was hesitancy on the part of the transcriber of the record as seen on the NGB website as to whether the second witness was John Morry or not. I have only seen the vital statistic version and have not seen the register so cannot say one way or the other. On the vital statistics record it certainly does appear to be John Morry.

But it is noted that Thomas Morry was an executor of the will of Jonas Barter so there seems to be a family connection, at least via business. Marriage Notes

Notes
General:
061207 The marriage to Jane Barter is found in the Anglican Cathedral Records. I'm not sure of the authenticity of the other marriage to Sarah Elizabeth ? because I found that on a family tree website of a person whose information may not be verified. Therefore I am making the marriage to Jane Barter the preferred one. [NB: changed today (231221 because the second marriage is now certain and resulted in the birth of his only child).

I am a little hesitant to state as certain that his parents are John Stabb and Elizabeth as shown on the baptism record I found on FMP because it turns out there was another mariner of Torquay by the same name for which two marriages can be found in the records of that parish. The latter man was probably born in 1806 as there is another birth/baptism record for a child of this name in that year.

At the time of his father's and mother's deaths, he was forced to concede that whatever value there was in their estates was rightfully the property of a St. John's merchant named James Howe who had not only maintained his widowed mother after her husband's death, but to whom William owed a great deal of money and including the cost of maintenance of his daughter, Melina from the time of her birth:

"That after the decease of the said William Stabb, his said widow continued to ???? with your Petitioner and at the time of her decease was indebted to your Petitioner in the sum of two hundred dollars and upwards for board and lodging and money paid by him for her use and that Petitioner paid the funeral expenses of the said widow amounting to upwards of seventy dollars.
That the Grand Daughter of the said William Stabb and daughter of the said William J. B. Stabb has been maintained by your Petitioner since her infancy and is still being maintained and educated by your Petitioner.
That the said William J. B. Stabb is indebted to your Petitioner in a large sum of currency for the maintenance and education of his said daughter."

Other than being the landlord of his mother and the financial supporter of his daughter, I have no idea what, if any, relationship existed between Howe and Stabb.

In the winter 2021/22 edition of the Newfoundland Quarterly (Volume 114 No. 3) Graham Skanes has published the results of his research on this interesting person. I am copying that article for the media folder because it is too long to transcribe here.Graham believes that this Stabb was likely unrelated to the other Stabbs who were merchants in St. John's at the time even though they too hailed from Torquay originally. 8134
