From - The Chronicle Herald, Halifax, Nova, Scotia. February 5, 2009 GILMOUR, Esther - December 7, 1926 - January 31, 2009. On January 31, 2009, Esther passed away after a short battle with cancer at the age of 82 years, surrounded by her family at home. Esther will be greatly missed by her son, Barry; daughter-in-law, Lynn; grandchildren, Laura and Gregory; granddaughter-in-law, Natalie; sister, Dorothy and brothers, Joe, Steve, Ron, Ed and Bill. Esther leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Esther joins in heaven her husbands, Frank Grono and John Gilmour, as well as brother, John; sister, Mary, and parents, Margaret and Gregory Battcock. Born in Brigus South, N.L., Esther graduated from St. Clares's Mercy Hospital, School of Nursing in 1947. She married Frank Grono in 1954 and was widowed in 1961. She married John Gilmour in 1963. Esther lived a full and productive life as a wife, mother and Registered Nurse. She retired from the position of nursing supervisor at the Salvation Army Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax in 1985 to live with son, Barry and family. Esther played a very active role in the raising of her grandchildren to the delight of both Lynn and Barry - her strong morals and ideals will live on in Laura and Gregory. Esther's compassion, caring and kindness for family, friends and her patients will be remembered by many people across all of Canada. Special thanks to Dr. K Calder, Dr. L. Clein; homecare nurses, Donna and Deanna; respiratory therapist, Karim, as well as retired nurse and special friend, Verna, who helped the family keep their promise to Esther to remain at home until the end in comfort and dignity. Thanks to nieces, Joanne, Janet, and Karen and family friend, Heather, who traveled from the Maritimes to visit during her illness. Thanks also to Ron and Mary, Gloria and Peter, and so many church friends for all their help. Memorial services will be held in The Salvation Army Castledowns Church, 12404 -140 Ave., Edmonton, on Saturday, February 7, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Castledowns Church, whose congregation and leaders, Major Ron and Linda provided support to Esther and her family. They will continue to carry on the good deeds in her community that Esther supported during her lifetime.
