100706: The headstone/grave marker that is clearly readable, depicted in Stonepics CD NF154-FER04-0002-0005 very clearly show dates of birth and death that are not in accord with those recorded by Aunt Jean. I am accepting the evidence of the grave.
"In Memory of Sarah Carter daughter to Robert Carter Esq. and Mrs. Ann his wife, Born Septr the 2d 1762, Died June the 4th 1772."

Strangely, this name does not appear on the list of names of the children of Robert Carter and Ann Wylley in the family tree allegedly compiled for the Carter family by Joey Smallwood, which is on file in the Carter papers at PANL.

050115:

This information from Jean Carter Stirling about how the headstone wound up in the Ferryland museum:

"The story there is that my first cousin Hubert Herder (his mother and mine were Carter sisters) at some point went to Ferryland and "stole" that gravestone - put it in his car and brought it to his summer home in Topsail known as Popinn (still there and still owned by his widow Joan Hickman Herder). There it resided behind his bar in the recreation room. He died somewhat young - 60-ish. When I returned to St. John's in 1990, and talked to Joan she suggested I take it back to Ferryland. Which I arranged; before doing so I took those pictures. Where was I going to take it? I didn't have a clue, I had been away from Nfld for almost 40 years! I agree, the Museum turned out to be a bad choice. Sorry. There was no way to return it to the cemetery, no one knew what place it occupied there when he removed it."

And again she explained this because of my faulty memory:

140718:

Information from Jean Carter Stirling:

"The tombstone of Sarah Carter, daughter of the old Surrogate Robert Carter and Anne Wylley, was donated to the museum by me. My cousin Hubert Herder (son of my mother's sister Marion called Moll) had found the stone in that graveyard in Ferryland and taken (stolen) it. For years it was in his summer place in Topsail. As you know I wasn't living here, and on a visit, years later, after he had died, I was visiting his widow Joan and saw it in the recreation part of the house. I took many photos of it, and then one day Joan said that I could have it if I wanted it so badly! So I brought it back to Ferryland and presented it to the Museum. Unfortunately we never found out where the actual grave was."

Tombstone reads: In Memory of SARAH CARTER, daughter to Rober t CartermEsq and Mrs.Ann his Wife Born Sept the 2nd, 1762 died June the 4th,1772

Events

• Alt. Christening: 29 Oct 1828, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 110116:
I'm really not sure where the baptism took place. I don't know whether there was a church in Aquaforte that long ago. According to the book "This is our Place This is our Home" by Joan Edward (Breakwater Books), the bible was donated to the St. Philip's on May 24, 1859 and it is thought by locals that the church was first dedicated about two years before that. I'm fairly confident that St. Luke's existed in Ferryland from about the early 1830s onward and it may be that all Aquaforte families travelled there for baptisms, marriages and funerals. Bishop John Inglis, who was responsible for Newfoundland but resided in Nova Scotia, came to Newfoundland in 1832 and consecrate a number of churches in the outports, possibly including St. Luke's However, I do not know the exact date that St. Luke's was built.

Of note in regard to early Christenings that are supposed to have happened at Ferryland is the name of the minister is P. Perring. He was assigned to work out of St. John's; these Christenings could have been performed in St. John's, likely at St. Thomas's.

• Court: Loan from Sheriff James Carter to Benjamin Sweetland and Sarah Morry, 3 May 1880, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (Party)

• Residence: From their loan from Sheriff James Carter, 3 May 1880, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (Occupant)

• Court: Further loan of another $80 from Sheriff James Carter to Benjamin Sweetland Morry and wife Sarah Carter, 18 Feb 1882, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. (Party)

• Alt. Death: 17 Oct 1893, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 010620:

Both the church record and the vital stats record made from it err in giving the date of burial as the date of death.

• Minister/Priest: Dan Henry Winsor, Lay Reader, 17 Oct 1893, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

180116:
According to a note by an unidentified person on her bible, which now rests in the Ferryland Museum, thanks to dear old Aunt Pat, who had no use for the Morry family history, this couple had no children.

29062021:

I just realised whilst comparing my information against that of Jean Carter Stirling in her research notes that there is a discrepancy between the Vital Records account of this marriage and the actual parish register. The former gives the date as 1 may 1850 whilst the latter shows 22 May 1850. This was one of MANY errors made in the Vital Statistics trasncription by a person named Frank Severn. Those records are NOT to be trusted.

170912: Information gathered online by Geoff Martin from the Oct. 16, 1893 edition of the Evening Telegram:

On Saturday last, 14th inst., at Ferryland, Sarah Weston, wife of Benjamin S. Morry, 65 years.

This date of death contradicts what I had but seems to be reliable as the date of edition of the newspaper precedes the former date of death that I had.The 17th was presumably the date of burial, not death. I am making the changes today.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

160119:

I don't want to read too much into this but she was buried (her name appeared in the church register) under her own maiden name, not her married name, and the service was conducted by Dan Henry Winsor, a lay Reader, not a clergyman. Is it possible that her marriage had collapsed? In those days in Newfoundland outports there was no such thing as divorce. Her husband was also buried by a lay reader (Henry Winsor). Very odd.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

140419:

The answer to the above conundrum may lie at least in part in the fact that in 1874 Benjamin Sweetland Morry and his wife Sarah Carter took a loan of £100 from Sheriff James Howe Carter and his wife Harriet against their (ie. Sarah's) interest in the vast Williams estate. And again in 1880 and then in 1882 Benjamin Sweetland and his wife Sarah were seen in the CDC-ROD records borrowing from Sheriff James Carter first $200 and then a further $80 against "their" (really her) share in the estate of her father, Arthur Hunt O'Brien Carter. I have a feeling that they may have died penniless and quite probably due to the husband squandering the monies that they borrowed on the wife's inheritance.
