Notes
General:
140813: No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date.

Jean Fox aka Jean Carter Stirling, Jean Carter Stirling Emails, "Electronic," On 140207 Jean wrote: " I had found all the children of T.W.S. Carter, although not all of them from a recorded source - I couldn't find Ida Carter or William Arthur Hunt O'Brien Carter in Baptisms.William turned out to be listed as Arthur Hunt O'Brien with no William in front of it, and Ida I found in a different book."

I personally suspect that the William Carter listed died in infancy (possibly in child birth) and that William was simply added unofficially to the name to Arthur Hunt O'Brien Carter as a mark of respect for his deceased brother.

050115:
Again from Jean this "gossip":

"The other similarly named male Carter was Kit's brother, a year older than her and b. 1878. Ida said he was always referred to as "Uncle Will" and I had found an entry for him as William Arthur H O'B Carter. He left Nfld and went to Quebec where he married a girl from Ferryland who had moved there because they got pregnant while still in Ferryland. (obviously hearsay, but likely true). Ida says her grandmother mentioned him as having been heard from by one of his local buddies, but just that he was okay. It was a fate worse than death to have a child before you are married ……."

Note: date of death reported in newspapers is incorrect - there is no Sept. 31! Moreover the Cemetery records are more likely to be accurate. Cannot explain the discrepancy in year of death though. One transcription is obviously wrong.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

201214: The dates of birth of both Arthur Hunt O'Brien Carter and his mother, Catherine Weston, are reported differently in various sources. If she was indeed born in 1749 and he in 1795 that would make her 46 at the time of his birth. While this is not impossible it is very rare, especially in those days when death in childbirth was common place if there was anything unusual about the birth. I feel certain that one of these two birth dates is in error, likley hers, which Aunt Jean had down as being 1755, which would make more sense. But since I have no source that supports her information I cannot accept it at present and will leave the dates as they are.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

210616:
In his transcript of the newspaper obituary of AHO Carter, Nimshi Crewe reports that he has heard that this man shot a Beothuk at Ferryland. I have also heard rumours that a Carter man shot a Beothuk (or two or even three Beothuks in some stories) but I have no idea if there is any truth to this old tale or, if indeed there is, whether it was this man or, more likely, the original Robert Carter, who would have been in Ferryland at the time Beothuks may have been in the area. See the note on this topic under Robert Carter (I).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

271120:

Kevin Reddigan suggested the answer to the derivation of this man's name:

"A Hunts Grant, by Captain Waller, Surrogate, HMS Rose." Now the two names mentioned take us back to the 1790s. I believe "A. Hunt" to be Arthur Hunt whose name first surfaced as a juror in 1786 in Ferryland Surrogate Court. In 1789, he was noted as being an agent for Robert Holdsworth and in 1790 , likely as part of his responsibilities, he had charges laid against two fishermen for neglect of duties and assault on a ship called the "Tom Cod". In later years, his name was also recorded numerous times in Ferryland Supreme Count for various reasons, i.e. jury duty, arbitrator, a committee member for repairing of the jail, etc. It appears he later became a merchant with various partners, ending up it seems as part of the distinguished firm of Hunt, Stabb, & Preston who were headquartered at St. John's."

I suspect that the complete absence of the name of Gladstone James Tessier on any Census for this family implies that I have him misplaced in the wrong family based on the information I had from Harcourt Gardiner.

120813: Today in consultation with Enid O'Brien I am taking the somewhat drastic step of deleting Gladstone James Tessier. We both think that he is the product of a mistaken transcription of the birth-baptismal record of one of his siblings (Frederick), who ostensibly had the same birth date, and that the name of his Uncle Gladstone was accidentally copied down because he was the witness/godfather. There is absolutely no solid evidence to support the existence of such a person.
