Death announcement appeared on 12 Feb 1855 in: 1) Times and General Commercial Gazette 1832-1895 2) Gazette (Royal Newfoundland Gazette) 1807- 3) Express (Newfoundland Express) 1851-1876 and stated that Deceased was the wife of P.G. Tessier and the daughter of Robert Carter, Colonial Treasurer. [Husband's first name also recorded as P.L.]. Her age was recorded as 24 but no cause of death was recorded. Most likely a complication of child-bearing as P.G. Tessier seemed to have a strong inclination to producing heirs.

Jane was born in Ferryland; the family moved to St.John's due to her father's
career (Member House of Assembly, Col.Secretary, Col. Treasurer, etc. ) and she was married and died there aged 24.

Dear Chris:

Re: Tessiers/Carters.

Joan Carter, son [daughter] of Robert Carter and Ann Wylly (and sister to Mary married to Daniel Saunders) married Captain Peter Tessier of Newton Abbot, Devon. They had four children that I know of as follows: Peter, Elizabeth, Jane and Ann. The son Peter married a Miss Germon and it was their son Peter Germon Tessier who married Ann and JaneCarter, sisters. They were the daughters of Lieutenant Robert Carter, RN, and Ann Williams Hutchings (who was the son of William Carter/Ann Catherine Williams Hutchings and grandson of Robert Carter/Ann Wylly).

The Tessiers were decended from Baron de Tessier, who fled the excesses of the French Revolution to England. He is remembered for having undertaken the care and maintenance of 6 Roman Catholic priests who fled France with him. Tthe Tessiers at one time had shipping and supplybusiness which was the largest in NL with 54,000 tons of ships and 325 employees. When quitting time came the flow of Tessiers workers blocking traffic on Water Street became known as Tessier's Army. Ref. A Seaport Legacy, Paul O'Neill.

While I was looking this up for you I came across something else in O'Neill's book as follows: Charles Tessier (this is the son of Peter) married a Miss Rogerson, whose ancestors included Patterson, founder of the Bank of England and Sir Hans Sloan, founder of the British Museum (sound familiar??)

I hope this is helpful.

Regards

Enid

Hi Enid:

Lacking anything better to do, I am going through Gert Crosbie record by record (yawn!) and checking them against entries I have from other sources. I have discovered an anomaly in some information that you provided tome concerning the mysterious marriage(s) of a Peter Germon Tessier. From what I can now gather, it would appear that this same man married Jane, the third daughter of Capt. Robert Carter R.N. (Colonial Treasurer) and then a couple of years after her untimely death at the age of 24 he married her elder sister Anne Catherine Weston Carter. Gert's entries that lead me to this conclusion are:

Tessier, Jane, wife of P.L. (P.G.?) Tessier and 3rd daughter of Robert Carter (Col. Treasurer) died on Feb. 10 aged 24, Feb. 12/55TGE (Times, Gazette and Express)

Tessier, Peter Germon and Carter, Anne Catherine Weston, eldest daughter of Capt. Robert Carter R.N., were married by Rev. Pedley on May 6, May 11/58 GTCLE (Gazette, Times, Courier, Ledger, Express)

I'm pretty sure my deductions are right but I would like your concurrence.

The thing is, in an earlier email, unless I misunderstood your meaning, you seemed to indicate that a Peter Tessier also married a Joan Carter, daughter of another earlier Robert Carter (the husband of Ann Wylie):

"My deep down gut feeling about Matthew Morry (Jr) is that he was called "William" - not on official documents but probably to distinquish him from his father, Matthew, Sr. If we look at your note re Sur Ct. Records -it would mean that Robert Carter had another dgt married to a Saunders in order to have a gddgt, Ann Saunders. From all the records I have on the Carters I could confirm only 4 daughters - Ann alias Hill, alias Sweetland, Morry, Mary md to Daniel Saunders, Joan md Peter Tessier and Sarah who died young. In his will (1800) he mentions 2 dgts, not Mary or Sarah, because they were dead at this time. Also, I can find no evidence of Daniel having another dgt. I believe he had 3 chidren, even though only two show up in the census. I believe he had William (who moved to St. John's, Robert and Ann). This is a mystery. I know by now I shouldn't presume anything but that is my feeling, but I am keeping an open mind on it. The only thing we know without any doubt is that Matthew Morry married Ann Saunders (who is my forebearer) and (a) he MIGHT have been called William (b) he might have a brother William (c) or there might be another Willliam Morry floating around. Personally, I vote for (a)."

Did I just get that screwed up or is this an actual event as well with the coincidence in names being because of a close affiliation between these families over several generations? I note that there are also later intermarriages between Tessiers and Carters even into this century.

Can you straighten out this mess for me please.

Chris

190614:

Jean Carter Stirling's notes on this person:

"There are 6 years between John's birth and that of William, the first born. Possibly there are other children we have not located."

201218:

There seems to be some suggestion that this John Carter may also have come to Ferryland along with his brother Robert, at least for a while, but it is ambiguous. In the vast collection of papers assembled for the challenge to ownership over lands around The Pool, John Noonan's lawyer compiled a listing of land registry information of pertinence. One such reference, found in the transcript of the record by Ray Curran on the NGB website reads:

"Number 11, Vol. 2, Page 238 Thomas Thomas record (Agent???) John Carter of Ferryland 1775 to ---"

There is no other known John Carter in the family at this time, though this could of course be an unrelated person. It requires further research. Jean Carter-Stirling could neither confirm or refute that this was indeed Robert's brother. She also pointed out that quite probably this same John Carter was one of eight people who signed the legal document giving possession of Isle au Bois so there seems to be some compelling support for the belief that it was Robert's brother.

I have just found the actual christening record in Sidmouth Parish Register on FindMyPast and it shows that he was actually christened on 8 march 1713/14, not 1716/17 as Aunt Jean (and now many others repearting her) have recorded. I will make this change in my family tree and on FamilySearch but there will continue to be many erroneous iterations of this error for years to come online. 3120
