280114:
Today I determined that it was not possible that this person was the son of James Shannon Clift and that it was almost certain that he was the brother of that man by the same name so I have merged them.
This realisation occurred as a result of reinstalling and testing the programme Map My Family Tree. The display revealed a startling fact I had not considered previously. Two incidents only in the family file took place in Geelong, Victoria, Australia -- the presence of the name Frederick Clift Morry on a voters list in 1856-57 as a land leaser; and the death of Archibald Clift on 25 February 1855. The two events are obviously connected to each other just as these two families are also closely intertwined. Frederick's middle name being the surname of Archibald is mirrored in the fact that Archibald had a nephew named Shannon Morry Clift. You don't get much closer than that. It seems almost certain therefore that the two young men went together on and aventure to Australia. One died there and the other died on the ship on the way home.

G. W. L. Nicholson notes in The Fighting Newfoundlander that Clift was one of 6 men promoted from the ranks In Edinburgh who later died in battle. He also notes that Cecil was a welcome addition to any celebration as he was able to rattle out a tune on any piano they found available. He did so in fact at a farewell dinner in Poperinghe on October 5 as the Newfoundlanders were leaving Ypres for the Somme once again, exactly one week before he was killed in battle at Guedecourt. This is how Nicholson describes the engagement in which Clift lost his life:
"Keeping to the pre-arranged schedule, a party led by Lieutenant Cecil Clift, consisting of two platoons each of "A" and "B" Companies, pushed on towards the Brown Line. Findong no enemy trench in the first 100 yards, they began digging in under heavy fire - though not before half of them had been killed or wounded, including Clift, who was later listed as "missing, believed killed."
Generally that method of referring to a missing soldier meant that his remains would never be found because they were blown apart by a shell.
140615:
Sydney Frost has remarkably little to say about Cecil in his memoirs considering that he was a Blue Puttee and Frost's memoirs focussed almost obsessively on the exploits of fellow Blue Putttees to the point of almost ignoring the other soldiers in the regiment. Here is all that he had to say:
After capturing the first enemy position, two Platoons attempted to press on towards the Brown Line. They encountered heavy enemy resistance, particularly enfilade fire from their right flank, causing serious casualties. The few that remained were forced to retreat to the Green Line. Their leader, Lieutenant Cecil Clift, son of Honourable T.J. Clift of St. John's, was killed.

In the article by Leo Murphy entitled "Newfoundland's Part in the Great War" in Volume 1 of the Book of Newfoundland, Hadow is quoted as indicating that during the evacuation at Suvla Bay "Lieut. H. Rendell and 2/Lieut. C. B. Clift (bombing officer) to be in charge of the last party to leave our trenches." The two were second cousins. Neither survived the war.
220816:
According to Richard Cramm in "The First Five Hundred", Captain Herbert Rendell and Lieutenant Cecil B. Clift and 30 men were the last Newfoundlanders to leave Suvla. There is no mention of the names of the enlisted men or the fact that Dad Morry was one of them.
Later he says in regard to the Battle of Gueudecourt "The day was marked by heroic and daring conduct, and by the loss of some of the very best of the Regiment. Among those who fell were Captain Donnelly, whose steady nerve and heroism at Gallipoli have already been mentioned, Captain. O'Brien, Lieutenants Ebsary, Clift and Norris. These men and many others displayed a courage, fearlessness and defiance of danger that were fatal. They could not be stopped except ny death itself."
240816:
His military file contains this eyewitness account of his death:
"1st Newfoundland Clift, Lieut. Cecil
(M. bel K. Oct 12/16)
Informant states that on Oct. 12th he saw Lieut. Clift lying in a shell hole between the German's second line and the British front, hit in the head, and later on the same day again saw him lying dead in the same spot.

In an article appearing in the Newfoundland Quarterly, in his regular column entitled Reveille, this time concerning Staff Sergeant William F.C. Hutchings, Bert Riggs writes the following:
"On October 14, 2016, a special ceremony, under the auspices of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, was held in Court Room #1 of the Court House on Water Street, St. John's, in which Hutchings and four other former students at law (Cecil Bayly Clift, John Clift, and Harris Oke of the Newfoundland Regiment, and Janet Miller Ayre of the Voluntary Aid Detachment) were each awarded the degree Barrister at Law (honorus causa). In doing so, the Law Society formally recognized Hutching's war service (and that of his comrades) and acknowledged that, in all likelihood, it was the traumatic effects of the war serive that prevented him from completing his legal studies after the war."

The Legion's book "Lest We Forget, Vol 14" had this brief entry on him: "CLIFT, Cecil Lt 505 Royal Newfoundland Regiment Missing in Action - Gueudecourt Born: St. John's Deceased: October 12, 1916"

According to an indenture filed with the Northern District Court at the ROD (NDC Vol 23 Fol 157-158 Thomas Foley To Charles N Clift et al 07-12-1885), Charles N. Clift and Shannon M. Clift were partners in the firm of Clift Wood & Company which had advanced a substantial amount of money speculatively in mining operations run by a Thomas Foley in Bay de Verde and White Bay and were about to sink some more funds into these explorations. These two partners were almost certainly Charles Neil Clift and his nephew Shannon Morry Clift. 3490

Interestingly, according to probate papers found today on Ancestry.com, he was the sole executor for Esther Graham Morry, his first cousin, and possibly therefore her sole heir. Her estate had a nominal value of 800 pounds, which generally means it was really worth a good deal more. That was a sizeable amount of money for a spinster to leave and it must be assumed that she received it as an allowance or annuity from her father, Matthew.
A year earlier he had been the sole executor and heir to his brother, Noah Clift, he left a much larger estate.
