I am at a loss to explain this second child named Archibald born to this couple. The first, if I am not mistaken, was still living and continued to live in this parish at least until the 1841 Census, when he was supporting a large family. I can only assume that Archibald Campbell Shannan (note the difference in spelling of the surname) was intended to be called Campbell and not Archibald.

061207: In the Anglican cathedral records on NGB the birth record for James Shannon Clift in 1852 indicates that his father was James Shannon Clift, son of James Clift and Flora Shannan. But I take the later name to be Shannon, from which the son's middle name was taken.

fact that her maiden name appears by two different spellings is entirely consistent with the uses of this name seen in Newfoundland then and in subsequent generations where it appeared as a forename or middle name for several men in the Clift and Le Messurier families. It is entirely possible that Flora and her siblings were illiterate, despite their coming from a merchant class family in Greenock, Scotland.

Notes
General:
150112: I have made this connection because Jessie Shannan appears as a witness on the marriage of Flora Shannan to James Clift, Esq. Knowing how all these merchant class families chose to intermarry it seems most likely that these are sisters and that Charles is the brother of Sydney Spear Livingstone who married Peter Weston Carter Esq., Note that one of the many Robert Carter's was also a witness to this marriage.

300114:

The spelling of this surname varies and consequently descendants who borrowed it for a forename or middle name also seem to have used one of two spellings: Shannon or Shannan. The former seems to be the original spelling in Scotland.

Note the difference in the spelling of the surname in the birth/baptism versus the later records. This is the same spelling used by Flora and Archibald Campbell Shannan. It seems this family vacillated between the two spellings in much the same way that they Morrys/Moreys of Ferryland did at the same time.

220614:

His is one of the few stones still found in the old Anglican Cemetery on the north side in Ferryland above the house of Ronnie Hynes. This cemetery is sometime referred to as the Forge Hill cemetery though many people call this area Fox Hill.

The Stonepics Images for this stone may be the best we will ever have.

As I read it from these various photos taken on August 9, 2003 the stone reads in full:
SACRED
to the Memory of
Neil Shannan
of
GREENOCK
and Late Merchant of this Place
Who Departed this Life June 25
1818
In the XXXII Year of His Age

The final digit on 25 is worn away and could be 23 but I believe there are paper records of his death that confirm the 25 to be correct.

290523:
The stone is still present and somewhat legible. Both I and Kevin Reddigan found and photographed it in 2022.

300114:

The evidence of this person's existence and the spelling of his surname requires work. He is mentioned as the father of the bride in a marriage between Jesse Shannon and Charles Livingstone (information uncovered by Kevin Eeddigan on NGB website).

THE ROYAL GAZETTE AND NEWFOUNDLAND ADVERTISER 1810-1814

1813 -MARRIAGES: CLIFT/SHANNAN: This morning by Rev. Rowland. James CLIFT, Merchant, to Flora SHANNAN. (11 March)

1814 - MARRIAGES LIVINGSTON/SHANNON: By Rev. Rowland. Charles LIVINGSTON, Merchant, to JESSE, 2nd daughter of Alexander SHANNON, Esq., merchant, Greenock. (6 Jan.)

As can be seen from the above entries, there was much confusion over the spelling of this surname. Flora and Jesse were sisters yet their surnames were spelled two different ways a year apart by the same clergyman. This problem carried on through the generations as the name became co-opted as a forename and middle name for sons in the Clift family in particular but also the Le Messurier family.

It is difficult to know now whether these people really did use different spellings of their names, as was the case for the Morey/Morry family of Ferryland. To be on the safe side, I am using the name that appears most commonly in records and providing the alternate spelling as an alternate name.

There is also some doubt as to the real forename of the father of these two brides. His name is only mentioned in account of a wedding as Alexander but a check in Greenock records at the time seems to suggest his name may have been Archibald. This requires further research.

I am making the leap that this is a sibling of Flora and Jesse and the others I have added for various suppositional reasons. In his case my guess is based on three things:
1. his surname is not common
2. the location is right
3. his age is right
4. he has a son named Neil Shannon, the same as the man who came to Newfoundland and died there, who I am assuming was his brother.

300114:

I am assuming that Worthy McAllister, who is living in the household of Archibald Shannon at the time of the 1841 Census, is his mother-in-law, meaning that his wife Margaret's maiden name would have been McAllister. Purely an assumption at this time.

Elisa Hamilton may be his sister by her married name if widowed, his sister-in-law by her married name if widowed or just a servant or visitor. In any event this is too unclear to add her as a family member.

300114:

The 1851 Census was made difficult to find on Ancestry because Archibald's first name was abbreviated to Arch'd and his surname was misspelled Shanna, though the names of several children were spelled correctly:

We can assume from the above that all the Shannons are one family and the other two women are domestics. This begs the question, where are the other children listed on the 1841 Census:

Archd Shannon13
Agnes Shannon 11
John Shannon 9
Neil Shannon 7
Margaret Shannon 2

Some may have died and some may have been at school or working. But I am inclined to believe that the eldest of these, Arch'd is actually the Rich'd that the transcriber recorded instead because he would be age 23 in 1851.
