*1790 June 22nd letter page 106 ".....a lady of great influence lives in Feriland by name, a widow WESTON a Roman Catholik and native of Killkeny. I wrote to Dr. LANAGAN and requested he'd write to this Lady, & recommend Mr. EWER to her as being the only clergyman qualified to officiate, and also to withdraw her protection from POWER & c. The Doctor has not answered me, & it's very probable he has not wrote to Feriland; this makes me suspect he is for POWER." sgn'd Wm. PHELAN, Waterford, Ireland.

Notes
General:
150715:

From Keith Mattews Weston name file we learn that Peter was deceased in 1776 and Catherine inherited several houses, fields, gardens, stores, wharves, fishing rooms, stages etc. and a cook room. Two daughters, Catherine and Sarah, shared in the estate.

A debtor, William McDaniel owed 145 pounds 12 shillings and six and a half pence to Peter at the time of his death and refused to pay in a hearing on 9 March 1787.

160916:

Apparently, when her husband died, there was some doubt as to the ownership of the property left in his will to his wife and daughters because the deeds had been lost in a fire in 1740. As a result, it seems a petition was sent to the governor to secure his support for these claims. I discovered this from a note in handwriting which I believe to be that of Nimshi Crewe in the so called 1000-2000 series of files at The Rooms. These are unrelated documents assembled in the 1970s into this series pending identification of the best place to access them. Most of these documents remain unaccessed into any meaningful place in the collections.

Here is what the notation says:
"Vol. 6, P, 149 [I believe this would be a Southern District Court volume] 26 Sept. 1776 By H. E. Gov. Montagu. This is a long document confirming Mrs. Catherine Weston, widow of Peter Weston Esqr., of Ferryland, in the possession of his several houses, fields, warfs [sic], etc., there "---" the Records of Ferryland wherein the Grants were inserted having been destroyed by fire in 1740 ---" "Mr. Sweetland's" property is twice mentioned as a boundary."

From this notation, I take it the property in question must have been over towards Caplin Bay as that is where the Sweetland property I know of was located.

120418:

The above notation by Nimshi references to Mr. Sweetland's property in this document led to my belief that these lands were in Caplin Bay. This is not so. The lands in question were near The Pool (see transcript in the Media folder). Hence it would appear that the Sweetlands first had business enterprises in Ferryland before relocating to Caplin Bay. I was not aware of this previously.

120418:

Enid O'Brien provided clarification today in the form of a document from the Carter Papers (see Media folder) that the lands near the pool later considered the very heart and soul of William Carter's wide ranging lands were actually his only because of his marrying Catherine Weston. and Catherine's widowed mother had successfully petitioned the governor at the time to allow her to hold onto her late husband's property which had been granted to him on condition that it always be used for its original purpose -- the fishery. The lands in turn were willed to daughter Catherine and her sister Sarah (her only surviving sibling). 386
