050910:

It is possible that this person is the father of Capt. Thomas Carew, the husband of Anna Coryear and the father of Captain Henry Carew, who married Esther Graham Morry. This Thomas Carew was a member of a two man skiff crew for John Badcock in the 1800 Census of Brigus. At this time I don't know anything more about him than that but with the same name and the location so close it seems possible he was the father of Capt. Thomas Carew.

230212:

Enid O'Brien is confident that this relationship is wrong. It is her belief that the Capt. Thomas Carew from whom she descends came over from England independently and settled initially in Witless Bay, only later moving to Cape Broyle, long after this family had settled there.

This bears further research.

Email from Enid O'Brien dated 12/10/01:

My mother's family of Carews came from England. There were only two brothers (that I know of) and they were John and Thomas. They had a sister Margaret who married Capt John Williams from Bay Bulls who came to live in Shore's Cove. He had only one son who married Ellen O'Brien but he died a young man and their was no issue from this marriage.

I was told by an elderly relative who was born in 1898 that our Carews were descendants of Sir Humphrey Gilbert/Sir Walter Raleigh (which you can take with a grain of salt). I wasn't interested at the time but I did copy it down. As you know Humphrey and Walter were stepbrothers and I was surprised to find that their father (who md X3) had one wife with the surname Carew. Well, it doesn't prove anything but interesting nevertheless.

There were other Carews whose antecedants were from Witless Bay. Even though they all lived quite close together neither I nor Kevin Reddigan (whose mother was a Carew) could find a connection. Kevin belongs to the group who came up from Witless Bay. I also spoke with Mr Wm Chafe, a grand old gentleman, who wrote a book on the railroad and who was living in Cape Broyle in 1910 and knew our family quite well and he said he was sure they weren't related. His mother was a Dalton from Cape Broyle and his grandmother was Cecelia Carew from the other group.

Email from Enid 120706:

"Our Carews are said to have come from England around 1838 and this would be Captain Thomas Carew who captained ships for Chateret Alsop and Robert Alsop. They were merchants from Paignton, Devon, who were establishing themselves in St. John's. Some of the ships he captained from them were the Tryon, Ajax, Friends, Victory, Seaman and the Dove. He is also said to have worked for the Coryears who were merchants in Cape Broyle and married Henry's daughter, Anna Coryear, and that is how he came to Shore's Cove.

Thomas was sworn in as constable for Cape Broyle on Nov 15th, 1847 in place of Henry Coryear Ref. Colonial Records.(Henry died). As far as I can determine the first vessel he owned himself was the John and Maria which was wrecked in March 1857 wherein 24 lost their life and only Thomas and a cabin boy James Greene were saved.

All "our" Carews are descended from Thomas. He had two sons Henry and John and a dgt Margaret. Margaret married John Williams of Bay Bulls and had one son, Thomas Louis Williams who married Ellen O'Brien but he died soon after she has no descendants.

The other son, John Carew, who married Catherine Delahunty had two sons, one dgt. The first son, John Henry, probably died young. His only living son, Thomas, who married Bridget Lahey has descendants and his dgt, Mary "Molly" married Greg Greene has descendants but these were Greenes. John was the Customs Officer for Cape Broyle.

So the only Carews in Cape Broyle related to us are the descendants of Henry Carew/Esther Morry and Thomas Carew/Bridget Lahey. All the other Carews are descendants from the Carews in Admiral's Cove."

The two girls sitting in the front yard are Vic and Alfreda Carew (twins). Vic Hayes is still alive (87) and lives in St.John's." [see photo in Scrapbook]

Email from Andrea Tarvin 230207: "The Loss of the John and Marie* also, the Loss of John Aylward's boat

(Author unknown - probably Jim Joe O'Brien)

*(This boat is well documented as the John & Maria but I have left the account as written)

The John and Marie was a fore topsail schooner Beaver Hat rigged that meant she had 2 yards on her foremast. She sailed from St. John's for Cape Broyle with almost her whole sealing crew on board. She was going to clear from Cape Broyle for the seal Fishery. It was on a Saturday, March 2, 1857 when she left St. John's for Cape Broyle, a storm of easterly wind and snow came on and late the same evening the John and Marie ran ashore in Brigus. She struck Herring Cove Point on the west shore of Brigus . When the John and Marie struck the rocks she had on board 20 men of a crew and Captain Thomas Carew of Shores Cove, Cape Broyle, when she struck the land the storm was at it's height with blinding snow. The 19 men of the crew managed to un-launch the punts and while Captain Thomas Carew and a young fellow, James Greene, 17 years old (of Witless Bay) went up in the rigging on the fore-mast. Early Sunday morning on March 3, 1857 when the snow storm cleared away Mr. Thomas Battcock saw the wreck with men on the foremast and quickly raised the alarm. Soon all the people of Brigus were out to try to rescue the men from the wreck. It was no easy job, as the sea was rough and as Brigus gut or channel was covered with slob ice making it hard work for to row a boat. The men of Brigus by their courage and hard work soon took the two men from the fore-mast of the John and Marie and learned from them of the tragedy of the night before.

As soon as it was possible a search was made to recover the bodies of 19 men of her crew, all the bodies were recovered near the entrance to Brigus gut. They were all made ready for burial in Brigus, most of the men that were lost belonged to Witless Bay so the people came with horses and brought them home to be buried in their places or harbour and only a few are buried in Brigus.

Captain Thomas Carew who was 50 years old did not go to the ice field after that time. If the voyage had to be successful the John and Marie would be the first vessel to clear from Cape Broyle for the seal fishery. Mr Thomas Carew lived for many years after his spending many hours in a snow storm on the mast of his vessel the John and Marie. He helped the economy of Cape Broyle in many ways, he was a Justice of the Peace for Cape Broyle and, also, was a special Constable for many years. He died in 1883 at the age 76 years.

The young fellow, James Greene, of Witless Bay, who also spent 18 hours on the mast of the John and Marie, spent many springs at the seal fishery. He was master watch for many years with Captain Arthur Jackman. He fished on the Grand Banks - all the rugged ways of life. He died in the early 1930s. He was over 90 years old.

James Greene has many descendants living in Witless Bay in the year 1972. The John and Marie must have been first named the "Hammer" or nicknamed the "Hammer". Mr Jim Greene as he was known when jokingly recalling his adventures would say he "spent 18 hours on the mast of the "Hammer" although at that time her name was the John and Marie.

The spring of 1857 was known at the seal fishery as the frostiest spring. Captain Thomas Carew has many descendants at Cape Broyle and other places, even St. John's. He was married to Ann Coryear, daughter of John and Mary Coryear. John and Mary Coryear lived at Shore's Cove. They were the founders of Shore's Cove, as Mr. Coryear was a merchant for a number years, he operated a room on land on the North side of the narrows, that land is known on the chart of Cape Broyle as Coryear's Point."

050113:

I read this account of the sinking of the John and Mary in J. P. Andrieux's book "Marine Disasters and Shipwrecks of Newfoundland and Labrador, Vol. 1":

"...Except... One Boy and Myself" On the evening of March 2, 1857, the brig John and Maria was lost at Cape Broyle. The death toll was high; out of a total of twenty-six crew members, twenty-four perished. The captain, T. Carew, was able to give the authorities a statement on the disaster: "It was between the hours of eleven and twelve on the evening of March 2 when we made Brian's Head. It was very thick and heavy with snow and sea, and in wearing her round, the crew unhooked the throat halyards of the mainsail. I let go both anchors, but before they grounded, she struck on a sunken rock. After a few minutes, she filled with water and went down. The crew was all lost in the incident with the exception of one boy and myself." Bodies started washing ashore, yet another testimony to events that occurred frequently on Newfoundland's rugged coast. I asked Enid O'Brien to confirm if the T. Carew was her ancestor Thomas Carew and this is her reply:

From: Enid O'Brien [mailto:enidobrien@yahoo.com] Sent: January 5, 2013 12:41 AM To: Chris Morry Subject: Re: Which Thomas Carew

Hi Chris,

This is Captain Thomas Carew married to Anna Coryear - my gt gt gdfather. J. P. Andrieux is quoting from a letter that Captain Thomas sent to the House of Assembly. However, although he is mostly accurate he did not quote word for word. Also, it was Brigus Head and not Brian's Head. I didn't read anything about bodies washing ashore but 11 were recovered. I have read different accounts. One says that the crew numbered 26 and 24 perished and only the Captain and the cabin boy were saved and the other says the crew numbered 24 and only the Capt and one man were saved. Most of the crew were from Witless Bay and they were getting ready to go to the seal hunt. i have only been able to find out the names of 5 men and 6 others, names unknown, were recovered. The cabin boy was James Greene from Witless Bay He lived to be 97 years old. In an account written by him in his 97th yr he said that he and the Captain clung to the mast head which was over water. They held on all night and M Batcock of Brigus got a boat and rescued them about 12 o'clock the next day. He says " we were 12 hours in the water undergoing the most terrible suffering which is very hard to forget". Jim Greene says there were 36 crew but accounts at the time lean more to 26. When it was cleared for the seal hunt it was supplied by Ewan Stabb and the tonnage was given as 76 and number of men was given as 30.

Thomas didn't die until June 1, 1883 twenty-six years after this event.

This is another son, Thomas. This was taken on one of his trips to Boston. Even though Thomas was the oldest when Henry (his father) died Henry ERNEST really took control of things. Thomas's wife died in childbirth and Esther raised his child.

Esther's eldest son, Thomas' wife Catherine 'Kitty' Hayes, died after the birth of their first child, Thomas Joseph called "Josie' and Esther took Josie and raised him. Josie was away a lot of the time 'on the boats'. All Josie's family are now gone and the house was abandoned the last time I heard of it. 2874
