Of note is the fact that not only did Esther Morey [sic] marry in the RC Church of the Holy Trinity but she also acted as a witness at an earlier wedding of Charles Jones and Harriet Cose. This seems to imply that she was at least contemplating changing religions in advance of marrying and may even have done so.

"The Carews all had schooners and they went back and forth to Boston, New York, PEI, etc. They didn't fish but they exported fish and supplies to markets. They were also known to 'run' rum from St. Pierre/Micquelon which wasn't unusual at that time. I have an account of one of Henry's schooners being wrecked off PEI. Henry was the son of Captain Thomas Carew and Anna Coryear. The Coryears were early merchants of Cape Broyle. Thomas was a Captain for some of the merchant companies in St. John's and his boat the John & Maria for Stabb and company with the loss of 26 men was well documented. The Carews were fromEngland. They had 11 children."
05/08/00 I am adding 1854 as an approximate date of birth based on birth date of his wife simple to establish relativity to other events.

Vincent was killed in France on July 10, 1917. Bessie then married Ronald Hayden.
Vincents brother Victor Carew was killed Nov 20, 1917 in France, WW1.

In an email sent on 22/11/01, Enid O'Brien included two articles, onedated January 12, 1887 without a source given but evidently taken from the Halifax Herald, and the other dated January 6, 1887 from the Evening Telegram, both recounting the loss of the "Minnie" in Bras D'Or Lake, Captain Henry Carew both owner and captain. There was a crew of 5 including the captain, his brother John, Michael Battcock, Patrick Gatherall and John Gatherall, the latter of whom perished due to the cold. Though the survivors were well treated by the family that took them in after the accident, the wreck was completely pillaged by their neighbours and nothing was left of the cargo destined for Newfoundland nor even the rigging. Capt. Carew complained of this lawless behaviour explaining that the contents of the vessel was all he had in the world and the only means he had of paying his crew for the year, but the authorities turned a deaf ear to his complaint.

"Evening Telegram, Sept 11, 1895.
Funeral of the late Captain H. Carew
The funeral of the late Henry Carew took place at Cape Broyle last Friday pm. A general favourite and philanthropic man in his lifetime, the people showed their high regard by attending the funeral obsequies in large numbers. Amongst the mourners were Rev LR Vereker and J Ryan, Esquire, Justice of the Peace at Ferryland. The death of Captain Carew deprives Ferryland of a prominent resident, and the people of the community of a valuable and helpful friend. The best days of his business life were devoted to the interests of that quiet settlement and was never known to be wanting when the material interests of Cape Broyle might be benefited by his services."
26 Feb 2008: In the application for Separation Allowance for her son Victor after his death overseas, Esther records that Henry was 45 years of age at the time of his death. I have no other information on his date of birth except this.
He had just sailed into Bowring wharf when he went unconscious and died."

Hi:
The picture attached is really a picture of a picture. It is of Henry ERNEST, called "Ernest". As I mentioned before Ernest was the business man in the family after his father died. He didn't marry until late. He married Sarah O'Brien (Aunt of my husband's father). Sarah was another person who lived to be 103 or 104. I have pictures of her dancing on her 100 birthday (which I attended). Ernest only had two children, twin girls. Victoria married Cyril Hayes and they only had one daughter Rosemary. Alfreda married Thomas O'Brien and they had no children. Thomas had a stroke and was sent out to St. Patrick's nursing home. About 5 years ago Alfreda was up the harbour playing cards. She left the home and the next morning they found her car by the wharf in Cape Broyle. She wasn't in it and there has been no trace of her ever since. It is one of the unsolved mysteries of Cape Broyle.

Mary Abbass wrote in an email on 09/12/01 that Henry's second wife was Maria Joseph Harvey, born Feb. 12, 1896. Neither she nor I know for sure but suspect that Bridget and Mariah (Maria) were sisters.
