I have been endeavouring to find out details about the parentage and places of birth of Margaret Maher (also seen as Malar) and her husband, William Quinlisk. Normally hints from landing records can assist in localising their places of residence prior to emigrating but so far I have not been successful such information in the record I believe was hers and I have not found a record for him. I assume that they arrived sometime shortly before the marriage which I believe to be theirs which took place in Chicago on 14 Sept. 1856, but if this marriage record is indeed theirs this would also imply that they probably did not arrive together from Ireland, further complicating finding their landing records.

Today, FindMyPast offered me four plausible birth/baptism records for a Margaret Maher born in Ireland ca (1827) a date derived from Census records:

Margaret Maher baptised in Moneygall, Tipperary on 1 July 1827, parents Denis Maher and Margaret Maher (probably not her maiden name but it was normal in RC records to give the mother's maiden name).

Margaret Maher baptised in Camross parish, Ossory, Laois on 3 Feb. 1827, parents Tim Maher and Mary McDonnel.

Margaret Maher baptised in Moyne & Templetuohy parish, Tipperary on 5 Jan. 1827, parents Edward Maher and Mary Blake.

and Margaret Maher born in 1832 in Mullingar, Westmeath to an unnamed soldier in the British 59th Foor Regiment, possibly illegitimate.

I think we can eliminate the latter because of the date and also the one in Laois because of the location. The first, in Moneygall is the most likely but the one in Templetouhy is not beyond the realm of possibility either. And then again, it could very well be none of these. Margaret Maher seems to have been a very common name in Ireland in those days.

So for now at least, I am opting to include the information on the baptism in Moneygall with a very big caution that there is no evidence to support the belief that this is indeed she.
