311220:

I cannot say with absolute certainty that this is the same William F. Quinlisk but it seems highly likely, though no family member ever indicated that he had ever been married.

2007 - well other than the fact that he is blind. He had an infection

Email from Terry Farnham Kovacic 03/03/01: William Francis (Bud)-never married

Email from Terry Farnham Kovacic 04/03/01: My Uncle Red is the son of William Q - I dont believe Tom had any children. My grandfather visited Ireland in about 1935 & took only 2 of his 7 children with him-Red & Bud (Thomas & William). Some of those photos are from that visit. I have had this little pile of pictures for many years-they must have belonged to my grandfather.

3400707: Email from Terry Kovacic: "I only have one Quinlisk uncle left-William (Bud)-he lives in Arizona & is well other than the fact that he is blind. He had an infection a few years ago that left him suddenly blind.Too sad. Gets around with a cane & the help of friends. My brother Dennis flies out there on occasion to help him out but he seems to be managing."

Notes from David Stevens:

Lived in Arizona. Had an infection in his eye that left him suddenly blind.

281114:
An aerogramme from Jamie's Auntie Elizabeth written about 1990 seems to suggest that Bill was married and had two sons. This is odd as I have seen no suggestion of this elsewhere. I believe she was mixing him up with his brother Bud (Thomas), who was in the services in WWII and who did have two sons by a couple of his seven wives!

Transcript of a Christmas card from John P. to Kay O'Brien Morry on 29 Dec. 1994: "Dear Kay, Just a note to thank you for the nice Christmas card. I'm John P., your Uncle Bill's oldest son. I met your brother Sean in '47 thereabouts. He was returning from Australia where he had a job as a underwater welder. I was much impressed at the time - I had re-turned home from the Pacific and was discharged from the Marines in Dec.45. I worked for my father in the Quarry where he was Foreman. We lived in a large house on a farm in the Heart of Chicago as we had a cow, horses, chickens & ducks. This Quarry is only three miles South of the Loop, the "Loop" being downtown Chicago. My Father retired from the Quarry in '49 and he bought a farm up in Wisconsin with my mom and the youngest of seven, my brother Joe. They sold the farm and moved back to their house in Chicago in '55. Growing up in Chicago was a great experience for me, I was born in April '26. I remember all the relatives and friends that visited my folks in "our" big house by the Quarry. My Mom was a Hoban, Ann, from Castlebar, County Mayo. I believe her and Dad married in '24. When my Dad first left Ireland he went to Canada and worked as a lumberjack for a while before coming down to Chicago. I'll close for now, Kay, I wish I had more specific dates for events. The best to you and all your family, Your Cousin John"

301220:

In an email today, PJ told me that the gold watch he has which was the possession originally of Father William Quinlisk, was given by Father Quinlisk to his namesake, this William Francis Quinlisk, on the occasion of his marriage, which was performed by Father William. I have no evidence of this. PJ also believes that they were not otherwise related to one another.

In a follow-up email today (311220) PJ admitted that he really had no idea how the watch wound up in the possession of his Uncle Bill and that he had only been guessing when he said that it was a gift from Father Quinlisk at the time that he married them. I have written to Therese Kovacic to find out if she has any knowledge of her grandparents' wedding or information to share on the watch.

Email from Terry Farnham Kovacic (granddaughter) 03/03/01:
I don't have this in a file so I'll just put it down & you can organize it as you like:

William Francis Quinlisk - born Jan 5,1894. His Uncle William died that same day.
- married Anna Josephine Hoban - from Castlebar. Married in Chicago
- children:
Elizabeth Jane m. Aldred Maxham - 6 children
John Patrick m.3 times - 1 son who is NOT named Quinlisk (adopted by mothers second husband & name changed) Michael
Ann Kathleen m. Donald Farnham - 6 children
Thomas Joseph (Red) m.7 times (!) - 2 sons - named Quinlisk -Tom & Eddie
William, Francis (Bud) - never married
Nora Mae m. Albert Parlich - 2 children
Joseph Anthony - never married
So as you can see, we only have 2 Quinlisks in this generation & I have no idea where these boys are & if they have children. They would be about 30 years old.
Maxham children: Maureen, Ann, Karen, William, Brian & Kevin
Farnham children: Mary, Therese, Donald, Dennis, Norah & Margaret
Parlich children: Michelle & Patrick

And again on 03/03/01:

My Uncle Red is the son of William Q - I dont believe Tom had any children. My grandfather visited Ireland in about 1935 & took only 2 of his 7 children with him - Red & Bud (Thomas & William). Some of those photos are from that visit. I have had this little pile of pictures for many years-they must have belonged to my grandfather.

290507: Fergus Kennedy has an account on Ancestry.com and was able to access immigration records for two William Quinlisks and a Joseph Quinlisk. This William (shown as being born "abt. 1895) immigrated through the port of Detroit Michigan, USA in July 1923. Fergus didn't download an image of his immigration card so I don't have that to show but the transcript he made reads:

"The July 1923 border crossing is definitely of Jamie's uncle. I have a good transcript of the crossing, and will pass it on to you ( I thought I already had! ). Summary of this is as follows; Name; William Quinlish Arrival Date; 10 Jul 1923 Age; 28 years 6 months Birth Date; about 1895 Birthplace; " Claughwidan " (sic) Birth Country; Ireland Gender;Male Race/Nationality; Irish Port of Arrival; Detroit, Michigan Departure contact; Uncle Thomas Burgiss Arrival Contact; Sister Mrs.Kelly

I'm not sure that Mrs.Kelly or Thomas Burgiss were related? Any thoughts?"

120807: Downloaded a copy of this card. Thomas Burgess is listed as his uncle and lived at RR5, Renfrew County, Cobden, Ontario, Canada. William's last residence in Canada was listed as Pembroke. His sister's address is given as 216 Bethune Ave., Detroit. Neither of these people shows up in my data base as relatives but my information is incomplete and they may have been. On the other hand, he may have just been using their names to gain entry into the US. On the card his name was spelled Quinlish

190807: On the 1930 census they were shown as renting and operating a boarding house with one female servant and six irish male boarders at 2700 Lime St. in Chicago
U.S., Date of Import: 26 Feb 2001, Internal Ref. #1.112.6.51564.

Information from PJ Quinlisk on 29-30 Dec 2020:

CJM
About the watch. In my first eMail on that subject I said it along with other items (traveling gear, Riding crop, suitcases, ect embossed with his name or initials) were given to Uncle Bill Quinlisk.
... Either by bequest or otherwise I do not know at this time. Also I think I said Fr W. Quiunlisk performed the Marrige cermony for U Bill and Miz Hoban. So same name etc and no close relatives on Fr Williams side he had every reason to be genorous!!!! RIP. Fr William Q had siblings but they had no spouses or WILD OATS sown, and may have pre deceased Him?
... I had spoken with Bud Quinlisk for several years before his death RIP. He had those items in his possesion but he says they were lost when his car was STOLEN..Was he a silly billy or worse to have that stuff in a car in the wrong place wrong time????
End of that part of the story..
Talk to Kay, she might know some background on Bud Q. One member of U BILLS family abandoned his wife and I belive left them in a bad way. Very much a " persona non grata" in Chicago for ever. I do not know if it was Bud or the other guys. Kay might have picked some vibes about stuff like that from Aunt La in her time. My sister Bridget might know something but over the phone it would not be easy, but later in 2021 we siblings hook up (every year ) for old times sake so I will be sussing it out then..
Best of Irish luck to Yall in 2021..
P. J...
AND do not know when the watch came into U Bills possession .. ,as I said it maybe by inheritence / Gift... I do know that I herd Aunt La say in our house say that she had that watch as her timepiece during war years in London::::: I have mentioned that in an earlier e mail... Perhaps Bill passed it on to her as Ladies watches were quiet small and unreliable in those times... Post war watches were vastly improvesd and more stylish for a Lady like La about town.....She probably brought it home on many of her trips before Gran Ma Q passed in Dec 1953. RIP.. Anyway they were both William Quinlisk's so maybe he just said HECK. Like the Mafia he considered U Bill as FAMILY!!!!. As for BUD ,he was responsible for loosing Fr William Qs stuff ,,it was not recovered ..full stop.
Our G Uncle James Q did insdeed go back to USA several times acording to the Kenny cousins in Cloughjordan where he spent his retirement and enjoyed his genorous pension...
Kevin Q in St Louis might be interested in the Maher //Moneygall conection as one of his Gparents was a Maher----- Kevins Mother thought they were from Killkenny area???? Mention it to him some time...Also U Bill made his one trip home in (black) 47. Weather was vvvery cold..... my Mom would say that when U Bill visited Aunt KITTY in Toom they had to get out and push Kennys hackney car up hills....
Talk later..P. J.

Additional information from Fergus: "Sorry, I don't have an image of his other border crossing. My memory of it is that it was of poor quality, and had less info than the one I've given you

This William is surely the son of Matthew Quinlisk and Anne Kenny. I found their marriage in FreeBMD in June 1877 in Liverpool. They are in the 1881 and 1891 UK censuses, with William aged 1 month and 10 years respectively. By 1901, William had left home (Anne died in 1898), and is listed as " William Quinlish ", aged 20, living in West Derby, a" labourer in Borax Works".His sister, Margaret Quinlisk married JohnHoward in West Derby in the Sept quarter of 1900, as per FreeBMD.Hisfather Matthew remarried in 1901 ( Sept quarter ) to either Edith Barkley or Martha Longbottom ( perhaps Paul Howard can answer that one ?), and died in Sept quarter of 1906, aged 52.

I've looked for William in the 1901 Canadian census, but without success. Perhaps he was again away in the U.S. at the time?"

081007: There is a William Quinlisk listed on a ship's register leaving Liverpool in 1920 en route to Saint John, NB. I think this could be our William except the age on the register is wrong (25). I didn't bother to pay the National Archives affiliate website for a copy of the record.

031108:

From Fergus Kennedy - information found on Ancestry.ca: "William J. Quinlisk; Arrived in Canada at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 26 April 1907, aged 26, born England, general labourer, destination Toronto. This is the son of Matthew Quinlisk from Loughaun, who emigrated to Liverpool. He (William) ended up in Vancouver where he died in 1963. Not sure if he married?"

290609:

Genealogy.ca had free access to landing records from 1865-1935 to celebrate Canada Day so I took advantage of it to find the two (2) landings of William Quinlisk. The first was Listed as "W. J." on the Ottawa in 1907 in Halifax and the second was just "William" in 1920 on the Melita in Saint John, NB. This time he was en route to Ottawa rather than Toronto and in faint writing it seems to indicate that his host was "Friend Rbt. A. Patchell". In 1920 he is listed as a farmer while in 1907 he was a general labourer. I suspect they are not the same person; the age given in 1920 is too different (25). Most likely the second arrival was Jamie's Uncle Bill, who eventually wound up in the US.

Notes
General:
200920:

I suspect that the date given for his birth in the obituary is actually the date of his baptism. In the cemetery record associated with the plot where he and his brother, John, and sister, Sarah, are buried there is a date at the top which is 1 Jan, 1863, which would have been before any of these people were born if we go by the other information available. That makes no sense, so I think it was actually Father William's birth date.

Note however that there is a completely different birth date suggested for him in the Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 found on Ancestry.com:
