Notes
General:
Jamie's Auntie Elizabeth Quinlisk reported in a letter to her on 11 September, 1991 that her (Elizabeth's) father, Jamie's Grandfather on her mother's side, John Quinlisk had three brothers, two of whom married and only had each one girl, therefore no one to carry on the Quinlisk name down their lines.Medical:
Elizabeth's Uncle Matthew Quinlisk had one daughter - Margaret Howard, of Vancouver. Her other Uncle, William Quinlisk had one daughter - Babs Quinlisk (married but her married name forgotten). She had a guest house at Tramore.
Third Uncle, Jim Quinlisk, was a Lieutenant in the American Army and never married.
So Elizabeth and Jamie's mother Catherine had only two Quinlisk first cousins, both girls. They had several cousins on the female side - Whyte, Harty, Reddan.
Catherine's parents had 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls. Catherine was number 7, born 18/8/1900, died May 1960.
P.J. Quinlisk told us during our visit in April 2000 that John had been called back from Canada to operate the farm in Ireland because his older brother had a drinking problem. They bought him a pub to operate where "he was his own best customer".
Date of birth given by PJ of 1855 has been corrected based on TNFHF details of birth records in Church. Sponsors at Baptism were Martin and Biddy Carthy (TNFHF).

• Witnesses: John Cleary and Margaret Quinlan, 8 Feb 1846, Shinrone, Roscrea, Offaly, Leinster, Ireland. Marriage Notes
According to Extract from the Marriage Record transcribed by Father Enda Burke, PP, St. Mary's in Parish of Shinrone, Diocese of Killaloe, (sent by mail by Jane Leahy on 20/02/01) John Quinlisk was incorrectly listed in the record as John Quinlan (same surname as wife).Children: 1. James Quinlisk US Army
Sponsors were John Cleary and Margaret Quinlan. The latter possibly an error since it is the bride's name.
Father Francis Meehan performed the ceremony.
Father Burke incorrectly reversed the digits in the year of marriage; he recorded it as 8/2/1864, when it should have been 8/2/1846.

Note that the actual register was for the combined Parish of Shinrone and Ballingarry and it isn't shown in which church the marriage was performed. But in the margin beside the entry the word ""Clonlisk" appears. This was not the Townland to which John Quinlisk belonged, which was Loughaun. Could be an error in the entry in the register or it is possible that was her Townland.

140207: Griffiths Valuation of 1850-1851 shows the following for Quinlisks inTipperary
Griffiths Valuation - North Tipperary 1850-51
Quinlisk John Behamore (Hawkshaw) Modreeny Tipperary
Quinlisk John Loughaun Modreeny Tipperary
Quinlisk Mary Townfields Modreeny Tipperary Quinlisk
Patrick Behamore (Smith) Modreeny Tipperary
Quinlisk William Behamore (Smith) Modreeny Tipperary
More than likely the two John Quinlisks were father and son and the Patrick and William in Behamore (Smith) were also his sons. Mary Quinlisk was likely not a Quinlisk by birth but rather a widow of one of the men of this family.
John of Laughan was valuated as occupying land, a bog and a house. The land was part of the possessions of Lord Dunnaley and was leased from him. The land (4 acres, 1 rood and 38 perches) had an annual valuation of 17 shillings. The bog (2 acres, 2 roods, 0 perches) was valued annually at 1 shilling. The house, office and land (19 acres, 0 roods and 9 perches) were valued at 8 pounds, 2 shillings for the land, 1 pound and 5 shillings for the buildings.
The John in Behamore (Hawkshaw) was shown also as a lessee of Lord Dunalley and his house and land (23 acres, 3 roods and 8 perches) were valued annually at 10 pounds, 5 shillings for the land and 1 pound for the buildings.
The death certificate for John Quinlisk reads: Date and Place of Death: Fifteenth February 1890, Lahawn [sic] Name and Surname: John Quinlisk Sex: Male Condition: Married Age last Birthday: 73 Rank, Profession and Occupation: Farmer Certified Cause of Death, and Duration of Illness: Bronchitis; 8 weeks; Certified Signature, Qualifications and Residence of Informant: Margaret Quinlisk [her mark, not signature], wife, present at death, Lahawn [sic] When Registered: Seventh March, 1890 Signature of Registrar: looks like M. Living Laughaun when son William baptised.
Griffith's Valuation in Loughan, Modreeny; 14 acres 2 rood 11 perches.
Valuation Rolls for 1856 - 1858, 1858-1860 and 1860-1863 show that plot 6 Loughaun consisting of house office and land 30 acres 2 roods occupied by John QUINLISK. The 1863-1866 roll shows plot 6 still occupied by John QUINLISK however the size is now 43 acres 1 rood 4 perches and he has also taken over occupancy of plot 5A Loughaun consisting of house office and land 14 acres 2 roods 11 perches and plot 5B consisting of land 3 acres 1 rood 28 perches. 1866-1869 roll shows John is occupying plots 5 (14 acres 2 roods 11 perches) and 6. Is still occupying plots 5 and 6 in the 1869-1879 roll however plot 5 is now shown as land only and the occupancy contimued in the 1879-1882, 1881-1889, and 1889-1908 rolls. It is probable the occupancy of the land was transfered to his son John QUINLISK before 1900.

201107: In records of the church copies of which were obtained by Rita Elkinsin October 2007 the names of the witnesses are spelled: Ml. Mulanphy and Jane Mulanphy. I have never heard of Fanny being used as a nickname for Jane so I suspect one of these records is in error. Since neither that I have seen is an actual image of the church records themselves, it is impossible to know which is correct.
