210310: Her Birth Record, Civil or Church, cannot be found online[see later information below on this]. She was 8 months old at the time of the 1901 Census and 10 at the time of the 1911 Census. There is no accounting for the absence of a birth record since she did not die in infancy. I speculate that she must have born somewhere other than Donegal. Perhaps the family moved briefly to the US and she was born there. But if so it would have been a very brief stay because they were in Tullaghobegly in both 1901 and 1910 for the Census.

220310: There is a Julia McCafferty shown in the US SSDI. The Social Security number was issued in Pennsylvania; It indicates she was born on Sept 8, 1900 but does not say where. She died in April 1977 in Brooklyn. It is very likely that this is she. The location of where her social security number was issued coincides with where her grandparents were married and it may be she moved there to be with her mother's people.

Most likely the same one shows up in the 1930 Census for Philadelphia as a servant from Northern Ireland who is single, 28 years old and arrived in 1928. On the strength of this evidence I am temporarily adding this information for her.

280310: Here is what John McCafferty had to say about his aunt Julia: aunt Julia I have uncovered her birth information which appears in the 1901 Census Tullaghobegly Irish, Co Donegal, together with her sisters, Sarah and Mary, and my father Hugh. Their ages are recorded as: Sarah 7, Mary 4, Hugh 2 and Julia 8 months. My aunt Julia came to the U.S. and remained until she died in 1977. When she first came to the US she lived in Pennsylvania (I don't know where) and much later moved to 1960 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn, NY where she moved in with her first cousin, John McCafferty, to help bring up his children after the demise of his wife Mary (nee Roarty). I also don't know when aunt Julia came to the US but I surmise that it was in her teens. Aunt Julia never married.

I just now found her civil birth register. I was put onto it because in a number of the US records she is referred to as Jiley (Julia) McCafferty. I searched under Jiley instead of Julia and found her birth register in Oldtown, Crossroads, Donegal, the daugher of Charles McCafferty and Mary McNulty, on September 8, 1900. A mary McCafferty, I am assuming to be an aunt I had not known of previously, was her sponsor.

100410: In an email from John McCafferty he reports: " received a copy of aunt Julia's birth certificate from my cousin who lives in St. Louise MO. Aunt Julia was,in fact, christened "Jiley"- the name which you had already discovered. She was born on September 8,1900 in Oldtown, Falcarragh, Co. Donegal. I also discovered that in 1925 she worked as a maid for a Mrs Massey of Forrestdale PA for the princely sum of $12 a month."
