From the Notes of Stephen Uphill: Mary was very religious, involved w ith
the church and took a personal interest in wayward girls by taking the m in and
trying to set them on the straight and narrow. One such as this late r became
Edwin Robert Uphill's second wife, Vashti. While Alfred was employe d as a head
gardener on an estate, wife Mary was running a lock up grocers shop a t 12 Gas
Lane, Salisbury, which she started with a ten pound legacy, and contin ued to
run it for 50 years, while raising a family of nine. She walked ther e every day
from Alfred's place of work, which was where the family lived.
After Alfred's retirement, they both ran a grocery store on the corne r of James
and Sidney Sts., and moved there to live.
After Alfred's death she lived for some years with Edith; spent some y ears in
rooms in West Street, Salisbury, and passed away at son Walter's home.
