I believe that this is the Josephine O'Brien of Cape Broyle who was murdered at the age of 19 by her recent fiancé, Herbert Spratt inSt. John's on St. Patrick's Day 1942. He was hanged for her murder. It was a gruesome murder. He killed her with a flat iron. He was not known to be a drinker and there seems to have been evidence that he had been drinking. His father refused to allow a defence of insanity because of the shame that would bring on the family! It is possible he was suffering from PTSD as he was only recently discharged from the Royal Navy on medical grounds. He was the last person to be hanged in Newfoundland.

She and her siblings were second cousins of Cyril O'Brien.
