290114:

I had formerly thought that this Archibald Arnott was related to (possibly as an uncle) the Lieut. Archibald James Arnott of the Royal Canadian Rifles who was present in St. John's during the 1860s and had two daughters there with his wife Caroline Martha Jones, from Québec. I discussed this at length with David Arnot at the University of Edinburgh and Gayle Wedeerburn in NZ, both of whom are apparently descended from the Lieut. by births to a woman he did not marry after abandoning his wife and family. I am now convinced that there is no connection between the two men. It was only a coincidence that they bore the same name. So I have severed the two this day.

Marriage Notes

231012:

From the church register of Christieville Anglican Church:

"Arnott and Jones Married: Archibald James Arnott, Ensign, Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment, and Caroline Martha Jones of the parish of Christieville, County and district of Iber., were married by license this Nineteenth day of November, one Thouasnad Eight Hundred and Sixty Three by me James A. Miller (?)

This Marriage was solemnized between [signatures of Caroline M. Jones and Archibald James Arnott]

Witnesses: signatures of ? Jones, ? Jones, ? Parkes, J.M. Wilson, [3 others illegible]"

271012 from David Arnott: He did indeed marry (and scandalously abandon Caroline, who later successfully sued him for divorce and the return of her three daughters in London. We have the divorce papers. The girls were indeed born in Newfoundland where the regiment was stationed, but Archibald had transferred into this regiment from the British Army.
Children: 1. Verbena Arnott 2. Caroline Francis Arnott 3. Alice Augusta Arnott 4. Jessie Elizabeth Arnott

Notes
General:
260711: I am making the assumption that this Archibald is the son of the other Archibald. Since the name is uncommon in Newfoundland it seems a safe bet.

231012:

In the United Service Magazine, Volume 100, Page 3, 1862 we find:

"Archibald James Arnott, gent., to be ens., by purchase, vice Irwin."

According to The Edinburgh Gazette, December 23, 1856, Page 1147: "Ensign Archibald James Arnott to be Lieutenant, By purchase, vice Perrie, who retires. Dated 19th December 1856."

Thus he bought his commissions. But why this was posted in the Edinburgh Gazette when he was in the Royal Canadian Rifles is not so clear. Possibly because he may or may not have been born in Scotland. There is conflicting information on that.

In Hart's annual army list for 1860 we find him as having been in the army at full pay for 5 years, having attained the rank of Ensign on 6 July 1855 and Lieutenant on 19 December 1856.

231012: Today I discovered a posting on the Genealogy.com Genforum that now causes me to doubt that this person is a son of Archibald and Susannah Arnott:

Archibald James Arnott, the Kirkconnel Hall Arnotts b 1838 Ruthin, Wales Posted by: David Arnot (ID *****7816)Date: April 19, 2012 at 01:22:05 of 291

"I am seeking any information about the family of my presumptive great, great grandfather, Archibald James Arnott, b 1838 in Ruthin, Wales. His father, George Arnott, was a physician in Ruthin (Nicholls and Arnott, Surgeons, Castle Street) and the nephew of Archibald Arnot, Napoleon's last doctor on St. Helena. Archibald james was an ensign in the 55th foot, retired as Lieutenant, Royal Canadian Rifles, in Canada where he had married and had two daughters. As far as we know he remain in Canada nd died there. I have a photograph of him taken in 1863 in Montreal.

He is named as the father of my great grandfather, Archibald Arnott, born 1863 in Gibbs Entry, Edinburgh. He was probably not married to my great great grandmother, Jane Duggan."

If this person is correct about the parentage of Lieut. Arnott then he is not associated with the other Arnott's in family tree and therefore will have to be removed. I have contacted the poster and await a reply.

271012: Yesterday I had two comprehensive emails from David Arnot at the University of Edinburgh (d.e.arnot@ed.ac.uk) who was able to conclusively prove that this man is not the son of Archibald Arnott and Susannah Finch but rather the son of George Arnott and his wife jane and was born in Wales. There may be a relationship between our Archibald and this man but it remains unproven and for now I am separating them but keeping the Lieutenant in the file, disconnected from the actual family tree.

Here is some additional information on him provided by David:

First known mention: THE LONDON GAZETTE, DECEMBER 19, 1856.

55t/i Foot, Captain S. W. F. Wilson, from halfpay of the 55th Foot, to be Captain, vice Werge, whose Brevet Rank has been converted into Substantive Rank, under the Royal Warrant of 6th October, 1854. Dated 19th December, 1856. Ensign Archibald James Arnott to be Lieutenant, by purchase, vice Pirrie, who retires. Dated i9th December, 1856. William Martin Frobisher, Gent., to be Ensign, by purchase, vice Arnott, promoted. Dated 19th December, 1856.

Note that Archibald James Arnot took a demotion, from Lieutenant to Ensign to transfer from the 55th Foot to the Royal Newfoundland Companies. A sign of some pressing reason to leave Britain?

From Edinburgh gazette Dec 9th 1862.

The undermentioned Officers to be transferred from the Royal Newfoundland Companies, according to the date of their Commissions :- To be Captains. Captain Thomas Hanrahan. Captain Arthur Saunders Quill. To be Lieutenants. Lieutenant William Gillmore. Lieutenant William Cavanagh. To be Ensigns. Ensign Charles Coghlan Smyth. Ensign Archibald James Arnott.

From the THE LONDON GAZETTE, FEBRUARY 21, 1868.

Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment, Ensign Archibald James Arnott to be Lieutenant, by purchase, vice Henry Thomas Thornton Salvin, who retires. Dated 22nd February, 1863.

THE LONDON GAZETTE, NOVEMBER 12, 1872.

Lieutenant Archibald James Arnott, half-pay, late Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment. Dated 13th November, 1872.

290114:
Following lengthy exchanges with Gayle Wedderburn, who is also descended from Lieut. Archibald James Arnott, I am more and more of the opinion that he was NOT related to the Archibald Arnott who by coincidence happened to be in St. John's when the Liuet. was serving there and had two children born there.

As a matter of interest, both Gayle and David Arnot informed me separately that the Lieut. abandoned his family and had children by a woman he did not marry afterwards. Thus the supposed date of death I had for him (Bef. 1871) based on the fact that his wife reported herself to be a widow on the 1871 Census when she and her children were living with her parents in Montreal, is not factual. It is also disproven by the advertisement above of his selling his commission in 1872.

For these reasons, I am severing the two Archibalds in my family tree file today.

Subject: <spamFilter -2.6 yellow> Caroline Martha Jones and Capt. Arnott

I noticed your paragraph on GenForum concerning Archibald James Arnott. I'm the great grand niece of Caroline Martha Jones. Perhaps you might find the following useful.

Caroline, daughter of Robert Jones and Caroline Jones (yes, the surname is correct) married Capt. A. J. Arnott in Christieville (now known a Iberville) in the Christieville Anglican Church on 19 Nov 1863. The presiding minister was her sister Helen Maria Jones' husband Rev. James Alexander McLeod (my paternal great grandfather). Captain Arnott was in the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Caroline was born in 23 Jul 1839 in Bedford, Eastern Townships, and baptized in the Philipsburg Anglican Church. She and Capt. Arnott had at least three children:
Robina Catherine Arnott, b. about 1865 in Canada, d. 1958
Alice Augusta Arnott, details unknown, d. 1898
and
Jessica Elizabeth Arnott, b. about 1869 in Newfoundland, d. 15 Oct 1914

It appears the marriage with Arnott was not happy as Caroline divorced Capt. Arnott 13 Jan 1880, quite a procedure at the time. Capt. Arnott, it seems, ran away with the children, who were later found living in deplorable conditions, and they were returned to their mother's care.

The result of this split is referred to obliquely in every single will from that side of the family. Robert Jones' will contains the phrase "..their children (whom he has lately taken from her) shall be restored to her...", and all the other wills all contain a phrase stating (paraphrased) Mr. Arnott inherits nothing at all. The wills are unusual in that all the women of this branch of the family were quite wealthy in their own right, and each will reflects that husbands of any or all of them do not automatically inherit their wealth or lands.

Caroline and the grown children lived with her brother Richard Arthur Archbold Jones, at 56 Gloucester Gardens, Paddington, London according to the 1891 English census. Jessie became a medical nurse, Robina became a missionary in China and met her husband George Rogers, a fellow missionary with the China Inland Missions, whom she married in 1903. Alice died relatively young in England in 1898.

Caroline died 14 Jan 1908, and her will states she would like to be buried beside Alice if she dies in England, and beside her parents in Mount Royal Cemetery if she dies in Canada. I presume she died in England as she seems to be buried in Bath.
At her death she was the owner of two seigniories, Berthier and Monnoir, and a share in the infamous Jones' Toll Bridge across the Richelieu between Christieville and St. John. There is a clause stating that if any of the inheritors communicate with Capt. A. J. Arnott or any of his wives, they lose their share. Jessie has her own clause stating that if she persists in her wish to marry one William Barnett, she will lose the revenue from the seigniory of Berthier. Inheritances from Caroline's will are to be free of interference by husbands.

The infighting continued in her brother Richard Arthur Archbold Jones' will where he states his nieces Jessie and Robina are not speaking to him so he reduces their legacies by half out of his love for their mother, his sister. He's also buried in Bath, beside his sister Caroline.

I hope this is useful, or at least entertaining.
