271012 Information from David Arnot:
The known children, and life of, George and Jane Arnot. (largely from the LDS family Geneology Website, which transcribes the essential information on birth, marriage and death certificates) and some details of the life of George Arnott, our presumptive great, great grandfather.
1. Archibald James Arnott, born, Ruthin, Denbighshire to George and Jane Arnott. 18th March 1838, also noted on 1851 England and Wales census, age 13.
2. His brother James Jones Arnott, born, Ruthin, Denbighshire. to George and Jane Arnott. 5th June 1839.
3. His brother John Lovell Arnot. born, Ruthin, Denbighshire to George and Jane Arnott. 10th Dec 1840
4. His brother Francis Shortt Arnot, born 7th November 1842 in Ruthin to George and Jane Arnott. (note there is also a Francis Short Arnott born in 1805 ( his uncle) who marries in Surat, India on 8th Dec 1857 at age 52, and who eventually inherits Kirkconnell Hall, after Archibald bought it from his brother (John Arnot) and sister in law (Catherine Shortt). They continued to live with him, in the Hall.
George Arnot (or Arnott) was born (or perhaps christened) in on 24th Sept 1807 in Hoddam, by Ecclefechan (ie at or near Kirkconnell Hall) in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, to John Arnot ( the older brother of Archibald Arnott, 20th Foot) and Catherine Short (she was born 14th April 1779, in Dumfries town, her father was Francis Short, her brother was Thomas Shortt (all spellings used as I found them), Napoleon's other doctor on St. Helena.
George was the younger brother of Francis Shortt Arnott b 1805 who spent most of his medical career in India, marrying in Surat, Bombay Presidency, in Dec. 1857. (I have taken the train through Surat, famous for its slums and cotton mills, little imagining a possible ancestor once married there.)
Also note that around 1835 George Arnott seems to be in partnership with Robert Nicholls in Castle Street Ruthin, but by 1845 Nicholls is in partnership with Thomas Comston Jones, a relationship itself dissolved in 1845, (afterwhich?) Nicholls petitions for bankruptcy (date unknown). Has George Arnott moved to a new practice?
The answer is yes, because we next here of George living in a rather grand house in fashionable Cheltenham, Rodney Lodge (now a language school on Rodney Street, Cheltenham). He is recorded in the Fellowship records of the Royal College of Physicians as George Arnott, MD (Edinburgh), Rodney Lodge, Cheltenham. Even more indicative of his status and prosperity, in the London Gazette of Feb 27th 1868, we find that George Arnott, Rodney Lodge, Cheltenham, Doctor of Medicine is one of the listed partners in the foundation of the Agra Bank (presumably a bank with Indian connections. Was his slightly older brother Francis Shortt Arnott (b 1805), newly married at the age of 52 in December 1857 in Surat, India involved here? ). Note also that George Arnott maintained connections with his birthplace of Kirkconnell Hall, Ecclefechan see Wikipedia on the village of Ecclefechan. "Ecclefechan lies in the valley of the Mein Water, a tributary of the River Annan , 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Annan <http://www.abcrailwayguide.co.uk/wiki/Annan,_Dumfries_and_Galloway> and 8 miles (13 km) northwest of the English <http://www.abcrailwayguide.co.uk/wiki/England> border.[3] <http://www.abcrailwayguide.co.uk/station/annan/w/Ecclefechan> The A74(M) <http://www.abcrailwayguide.co.uk/wiki/M74_motorway> runs immediately north of the village and J19 of this motorway is just northwest of the village.[3] <http://www.abcrailwayguide.co.uk/station/annan/w/Ecclefechan> The High Street of the village has a burn which runs through a culvert below it. This culvert was constructed in 1875 by Dr George Arnott at his own expense. (again, an indication that George Arnott, our presumptive great, great, grandfather was by now a wealthy man. See note on the Agra bank, which was being re-launched in 1868, after a collapse in 1867. George seems (cannily) to be involved in the re-launch, not the collapse).
