General:
The Rev. Henry Uphill came to St. John's as curate at C. of E. St. Tho mas's
Church in St. John's, Nfld. He met and married Grace Carter; the rece ption was
held at the Carter's summer house, Mount Scio, July 22, 1908 (see pict ure).
They spent several years at the Grand Falls Church which they enjoyed . He next
accepted the position of minister at St. Mary's Church, southside St.J ohn's,
where his sister Ethel came to visit him in 1911, joined by their brot her
George from Boston who took Ethel back there for a visit.(see accoun t of
shipwreck.) Henry and Grace spent some time in a parish near Boston; t hen
Henry decided to return to England. He used to have periods of depress ion,
according to Grace Carter's family information.
From the audiotape of his bro.Rev.Wm, Henry died age 80, soon after be ing made
Rector of Birkham; buried there.

George went to Antigua with a Government job; later he changed jobs an d became
editor of a Newspaper there. Next he moved to Boston,Mass to become a
bookbinder. After some years, he returned to Salisbury with his wif e Laura,
and daughter Marjorie; and after Laura died, he married Ida, a headmis tress at
a school.

Ref:her bro Rev.Wm's audiotape: she died a few years after William's r eturn in
1927 from New Zealand, in the Salisbury Infirmary. Because they wer e only two
years apart in age, they quarreled a lot, and yet were very interdepen dent.
She and her husband Bertie (Albert) ran a restaurant and boarding hou se,
in Salisbury or environs.
