040114:
I am only guessing that this is the William Sweetland whose wife Catherine was bearing him children in Trinity (English Harour) around the very end of the 1700s and early 1800s. I had previously mistakenly had the husband as William Frederick Sweetland, but that was impossible due to the fact that he was not born for decades later. Up until now, I had no information to suggest that there was a member of this family operating in Newfoundland other than the sons of Henry J. Sweetland and Anne Carter, Benjamin, Henry and William in Ferryland.
It is possible that this William comes from an entirely different Sweetland family. I cannot find any reference to his parentage online.
060715:
In fact all the evidence and the thinking of both Enid and Kevin supports the belief that this William Sweetland was not of the same line as the Ferryland Sweetlands. Enid points out that Nimshi Crewe personally researched the Trinity Sweetlands because he is descended from them (an illegitimate relationship evidently) and he found they were not related to the Ferryland Sweetlands so I have severed that erroneous connection today. Unfortunately, for now at least, I have no information on the parentage of this William Sweetland nor from whence he hailed.

"William Sweetland Jr. came to board and lodge at Southside." This is curious because his father and his uncle, Benjamin, were apparently both in Caplin Bay in a very large family house. So why was William Jr. Boarding and Lodging in Ferryland and with whom? I have always heard there was tension as a result of William Sr. essentially abandoning his family after their mother, Priscilla Ann Morry died. Perhaps this is one result of that tension. But it also raises the question, what was William Jr. doing to support himself at this time.• Probate: Probate of Will of Elizabeth [Graham] Ellis, 23 Jul 1844, Dartmouth, Devon, England. (Beneficiary) William Henry Morry Sweetland, Grand Nephew of Elizabeth [Graham] Ellis, was left a bequest of £250 in her will.
In addition, each of the surviving children of Priscilla Sweetland, the Niece of Elizabeth [Graham] Ellis was to receive an equal share of 1/3 of the value of her dwelling house after the demise of the initial heir, Easter [sic] Graham Morry. These siblings included:
"William Henry Sweetland, Matthew Morry Sweetland, Benjn Sweetland, Ann Sweetland, Priscilla Sweetland, & Mary Morry Sweetland"

06/03/02: Part of the the LDS records contain an erroneous date of christening (Abt. 1779) which I have not used because it makes no sense. Also they give his third name as "Murry". Obviously it is Morry, after his mother's maiden name.
190916:
Magistrate William Sweetland kept a diary during his years in Bonavista and it is available online in the MUN Digitial Archive Initiative both as images of the pages and as a transcript. Between October 21 and November 21, 1850, he was visiting in St. John's and remarked upon information given to him from unnamed people in Ferryland concerning members of his family:
"during my stay at Saint Johns I met some of my Friends or rather Ferryland Relatives from one of whom I gleaned some Information relative to my Family. William was expected in England from India to arrange about carrying out a Rail Road in India. Matt was supposed to have been at Hong Cong two years since and at St Francisco in August last where a vessel had arrived from India or Australia, Sweetland Master, whom I have not a doubt is Matthew."
Ironically, both of these sons died plying their respective careers, Matthew drowning at sea and William dying in India, or an area of what was then India but is now Bangladesh.
250417:
William Sweetland's notes in the family bible:
"William Henry Morry Sweetland my eldest Son as above
departed this Life at Sylhet in the province of Bengal in India
26th day of September 1857 aged 46 years and 9 months
after a short Illness. never having married he did not leave
any children "
230218 from Robert Carter's diaries:
Sunday, 5 October, 1834
"William Sweetland Jr. slept here." This note of not much import otherwise shows that at least one of William Sweetland's children by Priscilla Morry spent some time in Ferryland prior to embarking for India where he eventually died unmarried.
