Enid O'Brien email 07/08/11:
"Re: Peter Morry who married Bridget Coady(my grandmother's sister) is the son of Wm Sweetland Morry and Jane Winsor. He was baptised at the Ang Cathedral in St. John's on 28/8/1854 Peter Frederick. (Wm was listed as Master Mariner). Bridget converted to the Church of England with Peter and according to a taped interview of Bridget on Mother's Day 1976 she said that she was married in St. John's, they lived in Ferryland, and they arrived in BC on January 6th 1900. She also said that she would be 105 on August 22, 1976. My cousin taped the interview but unfortunately she wasn't interested in history so she didn't ask her anything relevant (which was too bad as she appeared to have an excellent memory). They had 10 children all living in BC. "

Hi Chris:
Re: The Photo
The only thing I can tell you is that when I was given the photo I was told it was Peter Morry/Bridget Coady.
When I got it I didn't really analyse it re clothing but now that you have brought it to my attention it would appear to be the 1920s. When I got the photo I tried to compare Bridget with the 1970s photo. The nose looked the same. The space between the upper lip and the nose was the same, the jaw line looked the same, the hair which was naturally curly and parted on the same side looked the same - at least to me. Did you think there was a resemblance?
According to the interview on tape with Bridget she said that she had 10 children. Whether this was living children or total number I do not know.
The children I have are taken from Vital Statistics, vol 31, PANL.
20/10/1890 Augustus Wm son of Peter Morry and Bridget (farmer). 3/1893 Jane Winsor dgt of Peter Morry and Bridget. 27/1/1894 Honora, dgt of Peter Morry and Bridget. 1895 Esther Graham dgt of Peter Morry and Bridget.
I was corresponding with an elderly lady in BC, Doris Stephenson (who was born in June 1908 and whose grandfather was Wm Morry) and she gave me the names of their other children (who were probably born in BC)- May (md a Campbell), Emma Windsor (I don't know by the letter if Emma is married to a Windsor or if her name is Emma Windsor Morry); Mona (md to an Elder), and two other names which I THINK are children but the way it was put in the letter I am not 100% sure - Douglas and Violet (Cathcart). I am not sure of the order of the children in her letter.
[29/10/01 - NOTE: I have established that Enid's information was incorrect on the Parentage of Douglas Windsor Morry; he was the son of William Morry and Anna Jennings Windsor; this can be established from the 1901 Census information for Burrard District, BC; I do not know if the same is true for Violet so I have left her attached to Peter and Bridget for now]
[PPS: 05/05/04: The Mona mentioned was also not a Morry. She was the grandchild of Peter and Bridget, Mona Ostler.]
I tried unsuccessfully to get hold of the person who gave me the photo tonight. If I can get anything further on it I will let you know.
Regards.
Enid"
Wishing to be precise about where Peter lived exactly before leaving Newfoundland, I record what Kevin Reddigan had to say in an email on 09/12/00:
"It also appears that William Sweetland Morry's son Peter also lived at Caplin Bay before he went to British Columbia."
Enid says "Ferryland" but then she may have been just using that in the general sense meaning not St. John's, where he was married.
In a new email dated 17/12/00, Kevin provided further information that helps nail things down better and also gives details on the births of the children who were born in Newfoundland:
"With reference to your notes 138 & 139, it appears that Peter and Bridget Morry lived at Ferryland first after their marriage but they also lived at Caplin Bay for several years before they went to BC. The CE birth records show birth for Peter and Bridget's children as follows:
Augustus William - Oct 20 1890 - Ferryland Jane Winsor - March 1 1892 - Ferryland Honoria - January 27 1894 - Caplin Bay Esther Graham - October 20 1891 - Caplin Bay * Violet - July 27 1899 - Caplin Bay
* I suspect this date may be transcribed incorrectly; it probably should be 1897 instead of 1891. If it is 1891, then the next birth in March1 1892 - less than five months later - must be incorrect. Note too that Esther Graham was recorded as being born at Caplin Bay.
Peter appears to have moved from Ferryland to Caplin Bay sometime between 1892 and 1894 births. For all of the above births, the CE records state that Peter was a farmer. However McAlpine's 1894-97 Directory shows him at Caplin Bay as a fisherman. In McAlpine's 1898 Directory Peter is listed as at Caplin Bay as an agent for Alan Goodridge & Sons - general merchants."
27/09/01 There is a discrepancy in the date of birth from what Enid O'Brien gives above (Christened 28/8/1854) and what one can deduce fromhis death record on file in BC, where he ws stated to be 75 at time of death on 4 Jan. 1934. Enid's date seems more accurate but I wonder if she transcribed it incorrectly from another source (easy to mistakea 9 for a 4 in some handwriting). I'll use the vital statistics date for now.

29/10/01 1901 Census data for Burrard District of British Columbia viewed on Genealogy.com show his date of birth as Aug. 21 1858. Though census data is notoriously open to error (records below are full of errors), this date conforms better with the Death record and I am therfore correcting Enid's Christening date to Aug. 28, 1858. This information also lists his profession as netman (on salmon boats) and earnings as $600/yr. He is listed as being on his own in this census (Port Essington area) but then is listed again with his family in Victoria (see below). It would seem that he and his cousin Henry Windsor Morry, who was also listed on the census in Port Essington with his wife Daria Payne, were itinerant or migratory fishermen at this time and not residents of Port Essington.

Note that the obit says he was born in St. John's. That was most likely a misunderstanding because he was known to have been born in Caplin Bay.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
230318 from Kevin Reddigan's draft book on the families of Caplin Bay:
"About the year 1900, Frederick (Fred) Costello became a Manager with the fishing firm of Allan Goodridge and Sons. Fred was born at Ferryland where his family roots can be traced back to before 1800. In June 1900, he married Bridget Sullivan (daughter of Robert Sullivan and Johanna Power) of Caplin Bay, and they bought a house at The Beach. This house was owned by Peter Morry, who had moved to British Columbia with his family. Three children were born to Fred and Bridget at Caplin Bay, but their eldest son, Cyril died there in 1916.
In late 1923, it appears that Fred and Bridget decided to immigrate to the United States, but after staying for only about seven months, they returned to Calvert in June 1924. Their only surviving son, William returned to the United States in 1928 and lived there the rest of his life.
Bridget (Sullivan) Costello died in 1938, and it appears that their daughter, Mary, who had married Gordon Johnston of Ferryland, came with her family to take care of Fred in the old family house at Calvert. For a while, they offered their home as a boarding house, but eventually, all of the Costello/Johnston family moved back to Ferryland. The old house at Calvert was used after that as a doctor's home and office for a while in the 1950s, but it eventually fell into disrepair and was torn down in the 1960s. Fred Costello died in Ferryland, at the home of his widowed daughter, Mary Johnston in 1963."

13 Sept 2021:
Here is an interesting and curious fact I just discovered on FindAGrave. At the time of his death, Peter had two living sons in the Victoria area. Yet according to the account of his funeral, all of the pallbearers at his funeral were either sons-in-law or cousins: Leonard Woodhouse, Leslie Freer, Peter Campbell, Leonard Ostler, Albert Morry and Douglas Morry. It is also possibly an associated fact that there are no photographs of Peter with his family, although there are several photos of family groups. It makes me wonder if Peter was not much loved by his sons and possibly others in the family. 7052

220615:
The land on which his house is built was originally granted in 1847 to William Goff of St. John's. I'm not sure what, if any, prior connection he may have had to Ferryland. There was a house on those lands previously, which is shown on early maps as belonging to a man named Culleton. Perhaps Goff was the grandson of Culleton by a daughter who married a man named Goff. Normally grants in this era were given as a means of formalising existing land ownership dating to before the time when grants could be obtained. So either Goff bought the land from the original land owner (presumably Culleton) or he inherited it. After Goff had the land registered in his name it is also unclear whether he ever made use of it for any purpose or if it was from his estate that Peter bought it. Another house was built nearby which is referred to as the Carter-White house because it apparently originally belonged to the Carter family at least as early as the mid 1800s, was tr4ansferred by indenture to the White family and in turn wound up in the possession of Bill Jack Maher through his marriage to Shan White. It was torn down in the 1960s. I'm not sure if the Goff land included that part where this house was built. I think that it did. This would suggest that the Goff land was eventually sold to the Carter family and then passed down as indicated above, finally being bought by Peter presumably from the Maher's.
I transcribed the Goff Grant from the Southern District Court Records retained at the Registry of Deeds and a copy of the transcript is included here in the Media Gallery.

It is interesting to speculate who this Mary Graham may have been who acted as as witness. Not Mary Graham Morry, as she is deceased. Presumably one of her nieces by the same name. There were two possibilities that we are aware of.

Children of William & Priscilla. I have a few additions, etc -
Matthew Morry Sweetland - Died July 1852, age 39 years @ sea (Ref. Headstone in Dartmouth, - St. Saviour's church yard - taken by Mrs Grey who was a Morry in the 1930s)
Benjamin Sweetlend (1814) died Sept 1846 @ sea with wife & child (Ref. Mrs. Grey)
Priscilla Sweetland (1818) died 1827, age 28 years (this would mean she was born in 1815, even though her christening was in 1818). wife of Thomas Scilly (ref. Mrs. Grey)
Mary Morry Sweetland (1820) Died 1854, age 33 years (Ref. Mrs Grey)
Mrs. Grey went to Dartmouth in 1930s and went to St. Saviour's churchyard and copied down the inscriptions on the headstones. I note that Priscilla died just after Mary was born, do you know if she died in childbirth?
If I haven't commented on anyone on the tree it is because I have nothing to add.

It seems likely that there are two "original" versions of the St. Saviour Register, possibly the Register itself and the Bishop's Transcript of the same. I base this on the fact that there are solid records of Priscilla's Christening on 2 April 1783 (e.g. on Family Search) and also either 25 or 28 April 1783 (e.g. Lanny's copy of records at the Church as well as those by others such as Tolcher, the online Parish Clerk, and Frank Wood, who wrote to Nimshi Crewe in 1960 about the Morrys). The latter two dates suggest that the image or original copy consulted by these people was blurred and some interpreted it as a 25 while others saw it as a 28. Most likely the latter information pertains to the date of birth whilst the Christening itself was the April date but why none of these sources realized they were giving a birth date as a Christening date and why they did not also see the second date in April suggests that they were looking at one original document while the 2 April date appeared in another original document.
130217:
The Dartmouth Family History Group did a database of all legible gravestones in the St. Saviour's churchyard some years ago and missed the grave of Mary and Priscilla presumably because the large missing piece of the stone prevented them from making a reasonable effort at reading what it had said. Therefore their map does not record where this stone is to be found. Strangely their database also does not indicate the location of the Graham's stones which are adjacent and should have been legible. I have taken their map and annotated it (in the Media Gallery) to indicate the approximate location of these stones. The fact that they did not find any other Morry or Graham stones is troubling and probably means they too have been destroyed or weathered beyond recognition over the years.
24/0317:
Another task performed by the Dartmouth History Group was to record and put online information from the register at St. Clement Townstal. One entry stood out because it mentions Priscilla:
"10/12/1802: Edmund Pearse BANFILL of Townstall & Nancy LUKE, by Licence.
Both sign. Wits; Priscilla Morrey & Hy. White."
There are names here that figure in our family tree, including Banfill (via the Tessier/Carter connection) and Luke (via Mary Foale Luke, wife of John Morry, privateer). It isn't known if Henry White is of the same White family that wound up in Ferryland.

I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.

Notes
General:
Information on this marriage and the resulting progeny came from the Descendants of Michel LeMessurier on the Family Tree Maker Homepage ofClive LeMessurier, Pine Bluffs, Wyoming.
Name spelled Priscila in the LeMessurier records, though daughters name is spelled Priscilla there.
LDS record of Aunt Jean Funkhouser (AFN: 13N0-PN2) also supports the marriage but provide no information on progeny. Aunt Jean's records refer to this Priscilla as Priscilla Ann without an "e".
Enid O'Brien (Oct. 31, 1999 email) notes that this marriage is recorded in the C of E records in Petty Harbour and that there were 8 children in total.
Clive LeMessurier's information shows her dying in the UK in Sept. 1851. This is impossible since she had at least 5 if not 8 children and would have only been 19 in 1851, plus her marriage date is recorded inPetty Harbour in 1858.
April 1, 2002 -- NOTE:
There is also confusion in regard to the birth date that needs sorting out (1825 or 1832 - its a big difference!). There may in fact be two different Priscilla Ann (Anne) Morry's accidentally merged here.
Re-examining the original birth records from the Ferryland District, as transcribed on the NGB website shows clearly that Matthew and Anne had two daughters named Priscilla Ann(e). The first, born Oct. 4, 1825, died as an infant it would seem, though there is no record of her death on file. The second, born 7 years later on Dec. 5, 1832, would have been the one who married William Warner LeMessurier. I am re-arranging my records accordingly today.

Email from Enid O'Brien dated April 20, 2002: "Also, I note that you don't have a date of death for Priscilla. She died in 1868. Ref. Gert Crosbie's books. "LeMessurier, Priscilla Annie, wife of W.W. Also, of note is that Priscilla had a child (another Priscilla) bap Jan 9, 1868 (St. Mary's Church, St. John's so I would speculate that she died from the effects of childbirth."

She may have been the first daughter of a Ferryland merchant to be allowed to do her finishing schooling in Newfoundland. But one suspects that her schooling up until then was undertaken in England, as was traditionally the case for chidren of Newfoundland merchants of this time and earlier.
