Email from Enid O'Brien 051206: She gave this as a transcript of Priscilla's gravestone as taken down by the mysterious spinster Mrs. Grey in 1937 according to Nimshi Crewe: "Priscilla, wife of Thomas Silly died 1847 age 28 years; also, Benjamin Sweetland, her brother, who with wife and child were lost at sea Sept 1846, age 32 years."
290908:
A transcript of a record in a notebook believed to have been given to Jean Morry Funkhouser by Howard Morry. The entries appear to be transcribed from family-related gravestones but the hand is not that of Howard Morry so it is unclear who wrote these records but it is believed to be either of his two aunts Jane or Frances [NB: Nimshi Crewe papers MG281 confirm it was Jane Morry Gray (Dad Morry's Aunt Josey) who visited Dartmouth and took these notes]:
"Sacred to the memory of Priscilla, wife of Thomas Silly who died 26 Janry 1847 Aged 28 years. Also Benjamin Sweetland, her brother who with his wife and child was lost at sea Septr 1846 Aged 32. Also Matthew Moray [sic] Sweetland who died at sea July 29, 1852 Aged 39 years. Also Mary Moray [sic] Sweetland who died 30 May 1854 Aged 33 years."

In his notes on the purported "family tree" which was thought to connect the Kirkes to the Sweetlands, (found in the MG281 Nimshi Crewe Fonds at The Rooms) Nimshi Crewe reports this information about the tragedy that claimed the life of Benjamin Sweetland, his wife and at least one child:
"Bishop Feild's Journal for 1849, page 125, under date of 1st October 1849 says, referring to magistrate William Sweetland during the Bishop's stay at Bonavista:- "Mr. S----------, the magistrate, called on me and informed me of the loss of his married son, with a wife and child, in the hurricane of September 19, 1846. They were coming from England to visit their parents and friends in this country and were supposed to have reached very near Newfoundland, but the vessel was never heard of."
251121:
This is what William Sweetland said in the family bible:
"Sacred to the memory of Priscilla, wife of Thos Silly who died 26 Jan 1847 aged 28 years. Also Benjamin Sweetland her brother Who with his wife and child was lost at sea Sept 1846 ad 32 years. Also Matthew Moray [sic] Sweetland who died at sea July 29 1852 aged 39 years. Also Mary Moray [sic] Sweetland who died 30 May 1854 Aged 33 years."
Rev. Oliver Rouse in his journal had this to say of the storm:
"September 28, 1846
Bowring. The mercantile firm of Bowring Brothers was formed in 1841 by the sons of Benjamin Bowring (born 1778 in Mortonhemstead, Devon), a watchmaker of Exeter who had opened a shop in St. John's in 1815, and in 1823 "acquired a small schooner of forty-four tons, called the Charlotte". "By 1870 the Liverpool and Newfoundland branches of the firm were operating thirty-six ships." (O'Neill 1976.919-21, 961, 956-57.) For details on the history of this firm, and of the Bowring family, see David Kerr: The Bowring Story (London: The Bodley Head, 1962).
our safety. Some ship which had seen the Hawk after the hurricane must have reached St. John's about the time of the present journal-entry , for Maria managed to get a letter to OR by October 15th, telling him she knew that the Hawk had survived the storm. During the week following the Hawk's de- parture, however, Maria must have been gravely worried about her husband's safety. Certainly she had cause for deep con- cern, for the hurricane which raked the Avalon peninsula was (in the words of the Harbour Grace Herald of September 23rd) "one of the most awful and destructive storms that has ever been experienced in this country". The St. John's Times of
September 28, 1846 (continued)
of September 23rd and 30th carried reports of the storm from all over the peninsula: reports of high seas, torrential rains, and violent wind; of ships driven ashore or swamped, and buildings destroyed. Out-harbors which lacked natural protection from the howling northeast winds were particularly hard hit. The village of Grates Cove (which OR was later to serve as mission- ary) lost no fewer than sixty of the seventy fishing skiffs which were lying at anchor in its harbor, and several larger vessels loaded with fish and oil- the fruits of a full summer's labor- were also sunk. (Another source tells us that nearly half the population of Harbour Grace was left utterly destitute by the storm.) In St. John's itself bridges were washed away, brick buildings were demolished, and the well-constructed, wooden Church of St. Thomas "was moved, bodily, from its position about
4 inches"."
On Wikipedia we learn this about the storm from an American perspective:
Hurricane Two
September 10\endash 24. Hurricane originated near the Leeward Islands. On September 19, a gale, possibly a tropical cyclone, destroyed 11 schooners from Marblehead, Massachusetts, and took 65 lives. After this event, Gloucester, Massachusetts took over as the center of New England fishing.

See Matthew Morry Jr's page for details on co-ownership of vessels the ECLIPSE and the IRIS:
It would appear that the latter vessel, the ECLIPSE, was re-registered after one of the original three owners, William Sweetland left the area (he went to Bonavisa and became a Stipendiary Magistrate). The fact that "Jr." is left off the name on this registration is likely not significant. This is not likely a registration pertaining to his father Matthew as all the other conditions remain the same as in the firstregistration.
The other two owners of the ECLIPSE and the IRIS were registered as: Benjamin Sweetland (Owner No. 1), Merchant, Caplin Bay William Sweetland (Owner No. 2), Merchant, Caplin Bay
William Sweetland was married to Matthew's sister, Priscilla Ann, andBenjamin was William's brother. I do not have a recorded date for when he left Caplin Bay, but it seems highly likely from this evidence that it was between 1825 and 1827, when this closure was recorded.
Benjamin was also listed as co-owner with Matthew Morry of the vessel SNIPE FISH. I assumed that the Matthew Morry in question was Matthew Morry senior since other registration records show "Matthew Morry Jr."explicitly as the registered owner. But I now believe that all these vessels were registered to Matthew the son of the emigrant, not his father. There is no way to know for sure from the records given.
From 1825 to 1828, the IRIS was registered to one owner, a Henry Sweetland. In 1828 the vessel was lost at sea. My guess is this Henry Sweetland was William and Benjamin's brother. I knew before that there wasa third child in the family but had no information on that child. Enid O'Brien confirmed in an email on 20/02/02 that the third child in the family was indeed Henry Sweetland.

Frank Galgay, in his book "A Pilgrimage of Faith", records that Matthew Morry sat on the Board of Education for Ferryland from 1836 to 1841 when it was non-denominational and then on the Protestant Scool Board in 1845. By 1862, after Matthew had died, his son John was a Board Member. Other relations serving during these years included Robert Carter, H.M. Kevin Reddigan transcribed a land grant to Benjamin Sweetland made in 1832 for a considerable piece of property in Caplin Bay. There is no explanation for what he may have intended to do with such a large piece of land as it was clearly too large for use in the fishery. A copy of the transcription is included here in the Media Gallery. Here is what Kevin has to say about the grant on his website:
This is the transcript of Crown Land Grant # 443 granted to Benjamin Sweetland of Caplin Bay in 1832. It is interesting to note that this is one of the grants from the volumes that are shown by Crown Lands as having been destroyed in the Great Fire of 1892. The grant is written on a three page pre-printed form, complete with the Royal Coat of Arms near the top. The land survey is attached on the fourth page. The grant shows that the land is being leased to Benjamin Sweetland at the rate of six pence per acre/per year. The land survey gives very few points of reference, but the southern boundary shows part of a pond (The Old Woman's Pond?) and a partial boundary with land already owned by Sweetland. This was a substantial piece of land, totalling over 27 acres. It is mentioned on 1N2-143 of the Cadastral Maps, but the location of the land could not be plotted because of insufficient survey information.

The location of the massive old stone house owned by the Sweetlands in Caplin Bay is well known. Kevin Reddigan took me there a couple of times. During the 1900s it was trimmed down to a workable size by the then owners (the Powers) and is still in existence to this day. See a photo in the Media Gallery taken from Google Earth.
Nimshi Crewe reported to Sir Brian Dunfield in a letter dated 4 August 1964 that Henry Sweetland Sr. built the house but eventually moved to Ferryland. He did not say why or when. If true, it was most likely because of his wife, Anne Carter (widow of Sam Hill) having much property in Ferryland, perhaps of better quality than what Henry had in Caplin Bay.
But most people who have studied this matter, especially Kevin Reddigan, believe that the house was not built by or for henry Sr. but rather by his sons, mainly Henry Jr. and William, as a company house for their fishing enterprise in Caplin Bay.

Today Kevin discovered an advertisement in The Public Ledger on April 22, 1834 for a bankrupty sale being conducted by Matthew Morry in regard to the equipment but not the property of the now defunct company, Benjamin Sweetland and Company.
Despite this fact, it is interesting to note that there were land transactions and other documents pertaining to his involvement in Caplin Bay long after that date.

Also this information turned up in the diaries to Robert Carter:
Wednesday, 24 September, 1834
"Benjamin Sweetland sworn in by the usual oaths this day as Magistrate for the Southern District." Other information shows that Benjamin Sweetland and Company had gone bankrupt either earlier in this year or the previous year and Sweetland would have been anxious for some new form of income. He was fortunate to have friends in high places who arranged for him to have this position.

Until now I had him born in Caplin Bay (Calvert) but believe that this was a mistake since his parents lived in Ferryland and the family's time in Caplin Bay did not begin until much later. I am changing his birth place to Ferryland today.

The reason that Benjamin Sweetland is associated with a document in this series is that he had left Ferryland for an appointment as Stipendiary Magistrate and Justice of the Peace in the Northern District at Trinity by this time. The indenture involves the ceding of rights to waterfront in Trinity for the purpose of building a public wharf and Benjamin Sweetland as the local JP was the party paying the £3 consideration to the previous owner, John Garland, who had before this time quit Newfoundland and returned to Dorset and had no further use of his waterside premises.

On May 10,1832, James Clift of St. John's, Josiah Parker and James Frederick Cawley of Harbour Grace and George Lilly of St. John's on the one part and Emma Gaden and others on the second part, as well as a long list of others in third, forth and fifth parts are involved in an extremely complex indenture found in Vol. 4, Folio 160 of the Northern Circuit Court records at the ROD by which Emma Gaden and others convey their title to other properties in Harbour Grace to a long list of debtors, one of whom is Benjamin Sweetland of "Capling Bay", although he is only owed ten shillings.
In another Northern District Court document (NDC Vol 9 Fol 465 Benjamin Sweetland et al from Patrick Fowlow 05-10-1843), we find Benjamin acting as a member of the Board of Education in Trinity in 1843. The exact date of his appointment as Magistrate in Trinity is not known but this back dates it from an earlier reference to his being there and acting in that capacity. 8223

For reasons unknown, it now appears to me that Benjamin and Tryphena Sweetland chose to have three of their children, Benjamin, Marie and Tryphena, who were possibly born and possibly already Christened in Caplin Bay, re-Christened in Trinity years later. Otherwise I am at a loss to explain why children of those names appear in the Trinity baptisms without a corresponding birth record. On the basis of this and other evidence provided to me today by Kevin Reddigan I am merging the two records I had for a Marie and a Maria and the two Tryphena's. There was only one Benjamin in my list of children and that is as it should be, but there are two christenings shown for him in Trinity.
