Born in Souris. Manitoba, but a Victoria resident
since 1912, W. Reginald G. Wenman went by the
nickname The Bird. Wenman, educated at University
School from 1912-1921. went on to become a teacher
at the same school and retired in 1971, after an im-
pressive 46-year career. He was a tough schoolmas-
ter, had sound values and a high standard of ethics.
He was involved in sports and taught and
coached rugby. Wenman inherited a love of cricket
from his father and eventually became the most pro-
lific Canadian cricket player of all time. He played
cricket for 40 years and scored a record 37 centuries,
including 3 centuries in four days at a 1929 Western
Canadian match played in Regina, Saskatchewan.
During World War II. Wenman took a comman-
do course, became the top trainee recruit, and served
with the Canadian Scottish Regiment.
In 1950, he contracted tuberculosis and took an
eighteen-month leave of absence from teaching to re-
cover in a Kamloops sanitarium.
Wenman who lived in Gordon Head, was a de-
voted father to his three children. He had an incred-
ible sense of humour, loved music and supported the
Victoria Symphony.
In 1986, the Wenman Pavilion at St. Michael's
University School was opened in his honour.
WENMAN, John
Died September 15,1950
Row H east, Plot 7
John Wenman emigrated from Kent, England, to
Ontario in 1870 and ten years later moved to Mani-
toba. In 1906, he returned to England with his wife
and son, Reginald. Their second son, John was born
in England.
Wenman and his family returned to Canada in
1912 and settled in Gordon Head, where he purchased
10-acres of farmland and had a house built that be-
came known as Acryse. As a gentleman farmer, he
grew strawberries, but later switched to daffodils.
Wenman had a keen interest in sports and played
cricket with the Incogs Cricket Club until well after
his 70th birthday. He continued to serve the club in
an official capacity after his retirement.
Wenman Drive located off Gordon Head Road is
named after this family.

In the 1911 England Census there was a mistake and a spurious third son was found. In fact they should only have shown two with William Reginald and Gower Wenman being the same child.
