030217:

Clara and Thomas were reputed to have been childhood sweethearts, but when the spirit of adventure took Tom out west to fight the Mιtis in the Northwest Rebellion she was not about to sit around pining for him till he came home three years later, so she married his cousin and was promptly widowed by the tragedy of his loss at sea.

I have only since learned that the dates do not bear out this romantic tale. She married William three years after Thomas returned from the west, so if they were star crossed lovers there was ample time for them to have married one another. Even after William had died, they could have married one another as Thomas remained single until 1880, but she went on to marry a St. John's merchant named McCoubrey and live a comfortable enough life in town. So much for old romantic tales!

Notes
General:
140813: This is how her name appears on transcription of LDS microfilm on NGB.

Name also seen as "Clara Isabel Windsor" in Aunt Jean's records but death cetificate confirms this spelling (see below).

This individual's records have been badly mashed on Aunt Jean's records. In the paper copy her father is John while in the LDS records it is Peter Morry (the latter corroborated by Helen Steinke). Her mother is shown on both as Anna Jennings, but in fact according to Helen Steinke, her maiden name is Anna Jennings Winsor (i.e. she married a man with the same surname as herself).

Helen Steinke 29/06/00

"Clara Isabelle Winsor - you have her parents JOHN WINSOR and ANNA JENNINGS. Her father was PETER WINSOR (later became WINDSOR - 1891). NOT John Winsor. and her mother was ANNA JENNINGS WINSOR. Anna was a Winsor, not a Jennings. Jennings is her middle name, daughter of Jacob Winsor and Anna Jennings. "

03/02/01

According to McAlpine's 1898 Directory, "Clara Isabella McCoubre" was living as a widow (husband's initials R.A.) at 49 Victoria Street in St. John's. She was no longer listed there in 1904. In Lovell's 1871 Directory. R.A. McCoubrey was listed as a printer of the Times along with it appears his brother J.W. and his father, the publisher, editor and proprietor, John Williams McCoubrey. Hutchinson's 1864 Directory gives the names and it is Richard A. McCoubrey. He also shows up in Church receipts in 1849. From all of this I deduce that Clara's husband's name was Richard A. McCoubrey and that he was employed by his father in printing the Times.

Thanks due to Kevin Reddigan for putting me onto a website that gives vital statistics for BC: Name: CLARA ISABELLE MORRY Event Date: 1934 1 2 (Yr/Mo/Day) Age: 82 Gender: Female Event Place: SAANICH Reg. Number: 1934-09-493160 B.C. Archives Microfilm Number: B13151 GSU Microfilm Number: 1952857

Apparently this marriage (to William Sweetland Morry) ended tragically when William Sweetland Morry was lost at sea. Clara then went on to marry a Richard Alexander McCoubrey and, after his death, when they were both in their 80's, she married her childhood sweetheart, Thomas Graham Morry. See notes from Helen Steinke below.

Chris I am extremely impressed - you did a wonderful job. I am connected through the WINSOR clan - my mother's parents were JACOB WINSOR and SUSAN HALL. from Aquaforte.

I had some Morry info, but thanks to you, I have filled many of the holes. However, I found two errors that I believe you should correct.

1. Generation 6 - Clara Isabelle Winsor - you have her parents JOHNWINSOR and ANNA JENNINGS.

2. Also Generation 6 - THOMAS GRAHAM MORRY, son of Thomas Graham Morry - you have his second wife the same person as his father's 2nd wife. CLARA ISABELLE WINSOR, and CLARA ISABELLE McCOUBRY whatever, are one andthe same person. Clara Isabelle was married 3 times. 1st husband: William Sweetland Morry - lost at sea. 2nd husband: McCoubrey, from whom she had a son, Alex McCoubry. 3rd marriage Thomas Graham Morry. They had been childhood sweethearts, and she was a bridesmaid for Chatherine White, Thomas's 1st marriage. They were in their 80's when they married.

I hope you don't mind my correcting you.

Wanda Garrett family tree provides this Christening record: "September 22, 1851Clara IsabelWinsor, Peter and AnnaPlanter AquaforteH.H. Hamilton" More likely this is a birth date and not the Christening date.

310117:
Her obituary, provided to me today by Kathy Montgomery, who maintains Clara and Thomas's Find A Grave entries, mentions all her survivors, including step-children, with the exception of her husband's namesake, Thomas Graham Morry in Medford, Massachusetts. Very odd that he would be left out.

020518:
Her husband was mistakenly referred to as Thomas George Morry in two newspaper obituaries and also in the BC Death index, suggesting the information was provided by her family, not his. 282
