On at least one official record (the marriage of Alison Dalrymple to her second husband, William Aitken) it shows her father was "John" Dalrymple, not Hugh. Karen Chapman had this to share on that subject: " now to the question of whether it was Hugh or John Dalrymple. In looking at the records, Hugh was used the most. Here is a record that shows Hugh. "12th June 1831 Hugh Dalrymple, Carronshore, and Helen MacLeay his spouse had a child born on the 11th of May last and baptized this day- named Alison" Parochial Registers of the coterminous parish of Bothkennar . This Allison was born at the right time. See document

Their marriage Banns: "Bothkennar 24th Oct 1812. Hugh Dalrymple in this parish and Helen Maclay in the parish of Falkirk have enrolled their names for proclamation in order to Marriage." Parochial registers of Bothkennar" is no doubt that the majority of official records do show his name as Hugh. It is possible but unlikely that he had John as a second name. Most likely the case or cases where he was referred to as Hugh were a simple case of error on the part of the record keeper.
