Tom Badcock indicates on page 244 and 249 of his book that May lost her boyfriend when his British Navy ship, Myra, was torpedoed off Nova Scotia or "not far from St. John's". They spell his name Handsfort whereas Giles gave it to me as Hansford. But either way I can find no record of him or of a vessel called the MYRA being lost during WWI. Very odd.
