There is no evidence for the existence of this person as a son of John Devereaux (Devereux) and Elizabeth Keough (Kiho) of Ferryland other than the record of his marriage to Mary Catherine Gillis in Esquimalt where this is declared to be so.

In Ferryland, there is a complete absence of RC church records for the period prior to 1870. Thus, none of the baptisms for children of the family of William and Elizabeth can be found and indeed their marriage is not supported by any documents. That said, it is hard to imagine why anyone would lie on his marriage certificate as to the names of his parents (even if he did not know exacly how to spell their surnames) and I think we simply have to accept this as fact despite other records (e.g. the death records of the children, which suggest that he was born in Ireland. Near as we can tell, it was his grandfather, Michael, who was the first and only immigrant from Ireland in the family.

In transcribing Dad Morry's diary for the years between 1940 and 1944, I became aware of the fact that a family mentioned there frequently was not as yet in my family tree, though ostensibly they should have been. I refer to the family of William Devereaux and his wife Barbara.

These people were the immediate neighbours of Dad Morry, appearing in censuses for 1921, 1935 and 1945, I discovered, immediately before the family of Dad Morry. In fact, they lived right across the main road from him.

There can be little doubt that they are a part of the descendant family of Michael Devereaux who seems to be the immigrant ancestor of all people of that surname (sometimes spelled Devereux) in Ferryland, though there were others of this name, probably related but not necessarily so, who settled in Trepassey and Logy Bay areas. Michael Devereaux was the father of Mary who married Henry Sweetland Morry, thus the connection to us.

The problem is, no matter how hard I searched, I could not find parents for this man. Though he was shown on the census records as being born in St. John's, the fact is, he spent his entire life, at least after marrying, in Ferryland and must surely have been part of the local stock.

In any event, pending the unlikely chance of finding the connection later on, I will include he and his family as unrelated individuals for now.

Apparently he did not appear in Ferryland by 1904 as he was not shown in the McAlpine Directory for that year in Ferryland.
