030711:
Unfortunately I know nothing about this man. His surname is all I can extract from the will of his widow, Emma Ann Goss, plus the fact that he was a man of some means judging by the size of her estate.
050811: Found out from Geoff Martin that the man I knew only as White was actually Arthur White the husband of Minnie. Minnie and Emma Ann are one and the same person.
He may have died in or shortly after 1904 because there is a will for an Arthur M. White on record at the Probate office of the Supreme Court in that year. (Vol. 7 Fol. 340).
It appears that his substantial fortune, as attested to by the size of the estate of his widow, may have been acquired under somewhat unscrupulous circumstances. He was employed as a government surveyor with the Crown Lands office. But he also filed a claim through a partner to an asbestos mine according to a website called "Once Upon a Mine -- Story of Pre-Confederation Mines on the Island of Newfoundland" which was written by Wendy Martin.
http://www.heritage.nf.ca/environment/mine/ch3p2.html
In Chapter III it mentions the asbestos mines at Bluff Head and in reference to them in a foonote the following information is recorded: "One of these claims became owned in part by a government surveyor, Arthur White, and Sydney Woods. The fee-simple grant to the claim was issued to the latter man".
This mine alone would not have netted him a fortune but it is likely he had other similar properties that he had a claim attached to as well.
