1901 census for Mudgee in Upper Tallewang James Kennedy.

1911 Sands Directory - Tattersall's Hotel, Coolah.

1904 was a hotel owner in Tallawang; 1907 owned Tattersalls' Hotel in Coolah; and also owned the kia-ora boarding house, a billiard saloon, dance hall and some cottages; 1910 owned property at 26 Inverness Avenue, Penshurst and the Graboon Hotel, also owned and raced the horses Rough Vera and Mr Whiz. 1920 hotel owner in Tambar Springs (for 5 months) and 1924-29 owner of the Royal Hotel, Coonabarabran. Another horse he owned was Montreaux which won the Mondooran Cup about 1940.

On retiring he returned to his Inverness Avenue home in Penshurst. About 1930 James and Kate moved to a new and smaller cottage in Queensbury Street, Penshurst. A few years later he and Kate were invited by his daughter Eileen McMANUS to live in her Coonabarabran home.

He was active in the St. Declan's (Penshurst) branch of the Hibernian Society. At one stage was President. It is believed he never drew his pension in his life.

Occasionally, and even when well into his seventies he went prospecting for gold in the Wellington district, and sometimes around Tallawang. It is believed that to the day he died he carried around in a pocket of his waistcoat a bottle containing specks of gold thet he had washed. He also had opals (that he had found) on his person.

Was living with his daughter Kath SULLIVAN at "Loch Lomond" when he died.
