Will of Thomas Martin from Newfoundland will books volume 1 pages 468 & 469 probate year 1845 In re Thomas Martin deceased. In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Martin of Saint John's Newfoundland Farmer being now nearly eighty years of age but through the mercy of God of a sound mind do make my last will and testament in manner following hereby annulling and declaring void any other will which may have been heretofore made by me Item first, I give and bequeath to my grandson William Martin (after all my just and lawful debts are paid) all my farm and plantation situate at the White Hills containing about twenty one acres held under a grant from His Excellency Sir Richd Goodwin Keates marked IV. IP. IT dated 15th of September 1815 to be his and his heirs for ever he and they fulfilling the conditions of the said Grant also all my stock of cattle, farming utensils, household furniture wearing apparel and effects whatsoever, Upon the express condition that he the said William Martin shall and will either himself or by his heirs and executors pay or cause to be paid to my dear wife Mary Martin the sum of twelve pounds currency at the close of every year during her natural life and that he shall continue to her the use of the dwelling house I now occupy so long as she may wish to remain in it, Also that the said William Martin his heirs or executors shall and will after the decease of my said dear wife Mary pay or cause to be paid to each of my four daughters Margaret Savion Mary Hennebury, Jane Murran and Hannah Phillips at the close of every year during the term of their natural lives the sum of three pounds currency cash. Item second, To my three sons Thomas, Henry and John I give and bequeath one shilling each they having already received their proportion of my worldly estate. Item third, I give and bequeath to my two grandsons Thomas Veysey and Richard Veysey all that farm and plantation called "Burket Farm" situate near my dwelling house containing about nineteen acres held under a Grant from His Excellency Sir Richd Goodwin Keates marked IW. IX, IY date 15 Sept 1815 and another Grant marked IU of the same date to be theirs and their heirs for ever they fulfilling the conditions of the said two Grants. And I do hereby make constitute ordain and appoint Robert Job and Thomas Bulley Job of Saint John's aforesaid Merchants Executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said Thomas Martin have to this my last will and testament contained in this and the two preceding sides set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of June one thousand eight hundred and forty four. 190304: Information from Mom: Emigrated to Brooklyn, NY giving up a good job with the oil company in St. John's at the persuasion of sister in law and brother in law (Jake). Could not find work and then moved on to Philadelphia after he lost his fortune in the stock market crash. Died young leaving a large family. Wife could only find work as a saleslady in 5 and 10 cent store.
