This week I visited Exploits/Burnt Island in the boat of Barry Porter along with Larry and Paula and Lois Bowden, a direct descendant of Robert Porter who guided the Hesketh Prichard Expedition.
While on the island, I checked out one of a supposed five cemeteries. Though as one migh expect, most of the stones were no longer legible in this old and very exposed cemetery, there was a signboard there indicating the names, date of birth (usually approximate) and date of death, as well as the names of the parents of those buried there.
There were two Menchinton names: Amelia Ann and Jane. And they were stated to be the daughters of William Menchinton and Grace Dalton. But there was complete disaccord between the approximate dates of birth and the specific dates of death of these two when comparing the information I had taken from the Menchinton Family Tree (Reg Menchinton) on MyHeritage and the sign board at the cemetery.
I am inclined to believe the person who took the time and trouble to prepare that sideboard and who undoubtedly consulted either the gravestones or the church records. Therefore I will substitute this information with that which I had taken from the Menchinton MyHeritage tree.

Grace Menchinton, of Exploits, Twillingate, and St. John's, widow of William Menchinton, prepared a five-page last will and testament in 1873, witnessed by Reverend Arthur C.F. Wood and William Munden Bearns. She died in 1882 at St. John's.
William and Grace Menchinton had six children: John Menchinton, a married man, who died in 1862; Ann Menchinton, an unmarried woman, who died at the age of 20 years, in 1842; Jane Menchinton, who married John Gibbons Jr., and who died following the birth of her first child in 1850; Mary Menchinton, who married James Jennings Winsor, and who died in 1897; Louisa Menchinton, who married Thomas Avery Winsor, and who died in 1913; and Amelia Ann Menchinton, who married John Power, and who died in 1892.

Worthy of note, the two daughters who married Winsor men, Mary Anne and Louisa, therefore have an indirect connection to Aquaforte on the Southern Shore. Though these two men (1st cousins of one another) were not from Aquaforte (they came to Newfoundland directly from Devon), they were of the same family of Winsors that settled in Aquaforte.• Residence: Queens Rd., Mar 1890, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Biography
William came from Somerset England to the St. John's area in the early 1800's he established Sawmills, Fish and Merchant Trading Businesses all along the Coast from St. John's to Exploits. In Twillingate he had Fishing Rooms, Houses and operated a large Mercantile Establishment, and made a great contribution to the local economy and to the development of the fisheries in this Region. He therefore had a requirement to have some Merchant Class Housing, he had a Georgian Style Longhouse built, which he used as a base for his Busness Operation until it was Sold to Edwin Duder Sr. in 1852, which today is the Heritage site known as the "Ashbourne Longhouse". While he was living in the Norte Dame Bay area, he had his house in St. John's looked after by their full time Housekeeper a Mr. George Knowling. The Fogo District Census of 1836 lists William as a Resident of Exploits Burnt Island in Notre Dame Bay. He is listed in the 1833 Census as Builder and co-owner of a 55 ton Schooner with his brother-in-law John Foote at Exploits Island. In 1849 he is registered as owner of the "Mary Jane" an 82 ton Schooner captained by a Mr. William Manuel. It was sold to a Mr Robert Grieve in 1866 and lost at sea in 1870. Was buried on Military Rd. in St. John's on June 12 1866.
010419:
Note that the reference to being buried on Military Rd. is interesting. I have found his grave in the Forest Rd. Cemetery. But it may have been moved there. Graves in the churchyard of the Anglican Cathedral and probably in other parts of town were relocated at some point due to the risks of infection spreading to the local population.
It seems likely that this William Menchinton had brothers named John and Harrison as all three of these names figure in Indentures whereby they loaned money to other fishermen presumably to set themselves up for the fishery for the year. These records are found in various volumes of the Northern District Court records at the ROD between 1835 and 1843 when it would be too early for the John Menchinton to be the son of William of that name.
Based on these records, it would seem that the Menchinton family played a similar role in the economy of the Exploits-Twillingate area that was played by family enterprises like the Winsors of Aquaforte into which family they married.
