Notes
General:
280109: Information from Wanda Garrett's family tree: "Fireman in 1883 when daughter was baptized. Engineer in 1885 and 1887. Went by Ford Winsor when children were baptized Ford and Anna had at least 8 children born at Dominion Point, Exploits, NDB. Ford is listed as an engineer in 1891 when Susan was baptized."

140813: Date of birth is not really known. The date given here, as in many cases during the latter part of the 1800s in Ferryland area, is based on a mistaken transcription of the baptismal date as the birth date on the NGB website. Also, it is not known if the christening took place at St. Phillip's in Aquaforte or St. Luke's in Ferryland because all events from the area were reported as "Ferryland" in the registers held at Petty Harbour.

310518:

This posting on the Facebook page of "Newfoundlanders and Genealogy" today by Nora Philips seemed at first to be pertaining to the same man though I have not up until now had any information whatsoever on his life and certainly not on such a messy divorce and remarriage. The more information that was presented, the more unlikely it seemed that Fred and Ford were one and the same person so I am not adding this information into the family tree:

The Dallas Morning News, April 10, 1889

A NEWFOUNDLAND DIVORCE.

Baltimore, MD., April 9.- A dispatch from St. John's N. F., stated that Fred WINSOR, formerly superintendent of the fire department in that town, had eloped with a Mrs. GARRETT, leaving a wife and four children. The dispatch further said the couple had left on the steamer "CASPIAN" for Baltimore. The Caspian reached Locust Point this morning with the couple aboard. The man strenuously denied that the affair was an elopement. He claims to be legally separated from his wife. The terms of the separation are that the man shall give the wife $200 in return for a surrender of all her claims upon him as husband and such an agreement the man said is sufficient to constitute a divorce under provincial laws.

On board the ship the man and woman occupied intermediate cabin berths, and during the day were much together on deck. The man said that the woman was in his service and that he intended to marry her as soon as they landed. The man appeared to be 38 years of age and the woman 35 and a pleasant face. She had two children with her a boy and girl, aged about 6 and 8 years.

In her research notes, Anna Elton Morris suggests he was married a second time, making application on the 30th of July 1921 for leave from the fire department for the purpose of getting married between the 7th and 11th of August, 1921. But I have not been able to find a record of such a marriage online.

I had originally thought that this and other marriages were celebrated at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in St. John's because even though they were recorded in the Petty Harbour C of E Register it was stated that the marriage took place at St. Andrew's. I have since learned that the first Anglican church in Petty Harbour, which was consecrated on Sept. 13, 1846, was named St. Andrew's. It burned down in 1934 and was replaced with the larger St. George's Anglican Church which now serves that area.

• Military: Peter Ford and Jacob Winsor French prisoners of war, 1811-1814, Arras, Hautes-Pyrιnιes, Midi-Pyrιnιes, France. 090719:

I have been looking for corroborative evidence to support the story told by Anna Elton Morris that Peter Winsor (and his brother Jacob it seems) were captured and held prisoner for several years by the French during the Napoleonic Wars. The Hunter Family website provides such corroboration as follows (date, place of imprisonment and other details differ from Anna's account):

In 1811, Peter and his brother Jacob were captured off the Coast of Newfoundland by Napoleon's men and imprisoned in Arras, France. (See the French prisoner of war records below)

Note 1: Napoleon's Berlin Decree of November 21, 1806 allowed French forces to seize vessels and merchandise and imprison English citizens. In 1811 and during a return trip from Caplin Bay, Newfoundland, Peter's fishing boat was captured off the coast of Newfoundland by the French navy and he and his brother, Jacob, remained imprisoned at Arras, France from 1811 - 1814. This accounts for the gap between Peter's first two children. See "Prisoner of War records" below.

French Prisoner of War records - October 1, 1813. Brothers Peter Ford Winser and Jacob Winser were prisoners #1406 and 1414. This document shows that Peter was the 1st captain of the ship "Mary" and was captured on December 1, 1811 and arrived at Brest, France, on January 12, 1812. Jacob was the 2nd captain of the ship "Mary" and was captured on December 1, 1811 and arrived at Brest on January 22, 1812. (Prisoners of War, The National Archives, ADM 103/468 Part 2 [Register of British POWs Prisons, L-V, France, 1787-1820] No. 1406). When Napoleon was defeated, the brothers returned home and began making plans to emigrate to Newfoundland.

Note 1: In the will of Anthony Winser, son of Henry and Mary Winser and therefore Great Uncle of Jacob, written on January 27, 1813, it tells us that "Jacob is in a French prison". Both he and his brother, Peter, were abducted from Peter's fishing boat by Napoleon's men in 1811 and taken to Arras, France and imprisoned. He and his brother remained imprisoned from 1811 until Napoleon was defeated in 1814.

I note that parental consent was required for the marriage to take place. I therefore doubt the date of birth given for her at the time of her death. She must have been a minor at the time and hence likely born closer to 1800 than 1796.

Notes
General:
Note: Source material for this family of Winsors (or Winsers) obtained from multiple source including Helen Steinke.

Helen Steinke's Notes on Jacob Winsor:

"LDS gives marriage date 15 Feb 1816. Accepted dates found in Transcripts from St. Saviour Parish, Dartmouth, Devon, Eng. for baptisms, births, deaths and marriages on micro film #0917192 obtained from LDS. Witnesses to wedding were Anna Jennings, John Ford, Sarah Winsor, Peter Winser. Date of death on tombstone: 19 Dec. 1858. This one I use. Other dates I have received are 23 Oct. and 23 Dec."

According to the NLGS website record of the tombstone the date of death was in 1854: "Jacob Winsor age 71 Native of Devonshire England D- 19 Dec 1854 Also his wife Anna May 1873 age 89 Also Dan Jennings ?" However the age given and our previously recorded birth date show this to be wrong so I am staying with the 1858 date. The record on the NLGS site also apparently errs on the date of death of wife Anna. It should be 1876, not 1873, which makes me leery to use anything I get from this source.

290806:

The dates on the gravestone itself are not to be trusted because they are obscure and damaged. His year of death could be 1854, 1855 or 1858 (or even 1558 for that matter!) His age does appear to be 74 so it is likely the date on the stone was meant to be 1858. Her date of death is very clear however - May 10, 1876. And her age is clearly 80. I think the date I had previously (May 13, 1876) was the date the burial was recorded and I am changing that date at least. I don't know how Dan Jennings is related. I suspect it is her brother.

0811211:

Frank Galgay, in his book "A Pilgrimage of Faith", records that Jacob Winser was the first teacher in the Newly formed Protestant school in Aquaforte in 1853 but that there were only 11 pupils at the time because all the others were sent to the new RC school. The school was still in operation in 1870 with only 13 students. The teacher then was Caroline Winsor, preesumably Jacob's daughter-in-law and niece. He also reports that the teacher in the new RC school was Mrs. Oliphant, which would be Sarah Payne Windsor, also his niece. So amongst them they had the tutelage of all the children in the village as a responsibility. Sarah was the teacher for almost half a century -- 1852-1901!

French Prisoner of War records - October 1, 1813. Brothers Peter Ford Winser and Jacob Winser were prisoners #1406 and 1414. This document shows that Peter was the 1st captain of the ship "Mary" and was captured on December 1, 1811 and arrived at Brest, France, on January 12, 1812. Jacob was the 2nd captain of the ship "Mary" and was captured on December 1, 1811 and arrived at Brest on January 22, 1812. Notes
General:
The NLGS website has this information on the gravestone: "Erected by Susan In Loving Memory of beloved husband Jacob Winsor d-Sept 7 1918 age 65 also, dau Caroline Maud d- June 29 1904 age 19 andLaura May d- Dec 11 1888 age 5 mos

As in many other instances on the NLGS site, the information was obviously transcribed badly as the date of death should be Sept. 17, 1913, not Sept. 7, 1918 (the age and date of birth would then conform with what we had already).

Notes

171018:

I had a James Winsor or Winser in the family tree as the earliest ancestor of the Aquaculture line but formerly could not find evidence to support his existence. On the contrary, I discovered evidence to support the belief that a Henry Winsor, who's wife was also named Joan, was in fact the projenitor of this clan and I had therefore changed the name accordingly.

Now I have discovered that there was indeed a couple named James and Joan Winsor who were christening children at St. Mary the Virgin in Denbury at the same time as Henry and Joan Winser.

There also turns out to be a man named Thomas Winser from nearby Torbryan who is also christening his children at Denbury at this time, though his wife's name is never given for some reason.

I believe that these three are all sons of the same man, an earlier Thomas Winsor who married Marryn (or mary) Endell in Stokeinteignhead (also not that far away) before moving to Denbury or nearby to raise his family. That Thomas is I believe buried in Denbury.

This will necessitate some very careful sorting out to ensure that the correct parents are assigned to the various Winsor children of Denbury from this era.
