Notes
General:
020914:

Seems most likely her name was spelled Helen and not Hellen.

By 1901 brother James, who was head of the household before this, is a retired farmer and living with a large group of people in a household led by Mary Leask, who appears to have somehow taken over his property. It isn't clear if she is married or widowed or truly single as the census seems to suggest. Helen Minty is shown as a grandmother but she was never married on earlier censuses and this is probably an error.

Notes
General:
Name may have been Minto. Date of Birth and exact location confused.

020712:

Although the date and place of death used by Aunt Jean are very exact, there is a mystery. James Minty, age 77, appears on the 1871 Census living with his son and daughter-in-law, James and Elizabeth, in Elgin. There can be no doubt that this is the correct family for the Minty's from whom Mom Morry descends. So the only question is, whether the James Minty aged 77, named as the father of the head of household is real or whether there may have been some sort of fiddle going on to collect pension or other benefits after he had passed away in 1869. If it were indeed the father of William Minty, Mom Morry's father, then his age would indicate we also have his birth date wrong. At 77 in 1871, he should have been born in 1794, not 1774 as we have. Moreover, if we have his wife Jane Muir's date of death right, she should also appear on this census as we show she did not die until 1876.

This all requires more research to sort out.

Notes
General:
Discrepancy between birth dates in Aunt Jean's written and published LDS records. If the LDS records are accepted then William and James were twins.

230821:

It would appear from the 1881 Census and onward that James who never married more or less became the pater familias and was looking after two unmarried sisters, Jean or Jane and Helen, as well as serving as guardian for several children some of whom appear to be his nieces and nephews but the mother is not shown.

By 1901 James is a retired farmer and living with a large group of people in a household led by Mary Leask, who appears to have somehow taken over his property. It isn't clear if she is married or widowed or truly single as the census seems to suggest. Helen Minty is shown as a grandmother but she was never married on earlier censuses and this is probably an error.

• Residence: 6 Ardmillan Terrace, 1925, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the tenant/occupier but not the owner. He was living alone by this time, his wife having died years earlier and all of his children having left. Oddly, his occupation was listed as "Rubberworker". I cannot account for this anomaly. His rent was 22 pounds and 15 shillings a year. Ownership of the house at 6 Ardmillan Terrace was complicated and split amongst at least 6 people, including 3 named Coulter and two married women who may have been Coulters at birth but also one man named George Young ( a brother-in-law?).

• Medical Condition: Died at 7:30 PM, 14 Oct 1927, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

• Alt. Death: 14 Oct 1929, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

260910:

I noted that in the marriage record it showed Mary's mother's maiden name as "Mitchell". I wrote to Karen Chapman to see if she could resolve this conflict by consulting her mother's notes. This is what she wrote back:

"1st question, Mary and James Marriage record with Mitchell as a maiden name for Allison instead of Dalrymple. This is directly contradictory to the death record of Mary Laing Minty. It lists her parents as William Webster, Cabinetmaker? And Allison Mitchell Aitkin, previously Webster M.S. Dalrymple. Source: Death Register kept at the General Registry Office in Edinburgh. Provided by the Scots Ancestral Society. See attached document. From the same registry we see, the confirmation and deaths of children listing William Webster and Allison Dalrymple as parents. Children in this case are William, John, Hugh."

Apparently the clerk who entered the marriage record confused her mother's middle name as her actual maiden name.

250416 (ANZAC Day): Noted that on her early pedigree charts Aunt Jean had their year of marriage as 1875 (correct year is 1878) but the month and day correct. Not sure whether that was just a transcription error on her part or if she had found a reference that mistakenly gave that year.

Notes
General:
170410:

It is surprising to me that a relative so recent in the family as Aunt Jean's Uncle should have been misnamed in her records but that does appear to be the case. She has him listed as George Alexander James Minty but in fact he is never found anywhere else by that name. His most common name is James, but it is also seens as James A. G. Finally on his marriage record the name quite clearly shows up as James Alexander Gordon (NOT George) Minty. So I am choosing to substitute this version of his name and leave the one used by Aunt Jean as an alias only.

220910:
Living with family of his father James Minty during the 1901 Census

280415:
There is a reference in the Edinburgh Gazette, November 6, 1914 to a position being filled on October 7, 194 after open competition as Exchequer and Audit Department: Examiner and the name given is James Minty. We only know of this James having had a crack at being an artist and then reverting to his father's trade in the rubberworks so it may be another man by the same name.

150816:
Karen Chapman told me in an email today that in a letter from Chrissie Minty Taylor to her mother, Aunt Jean, Chrissie confirmed that there were only two in her family, her brother Jim and herself. Jim was 17 months older than her.
