011213:

There is an anomaly on the 1871 Census that needs to be resolved. This is the information showing for the household of William and Elizabeth Minty according to the transcript on Ancestry.com (they cannot show the original page because that is reserved for profit making by the thrify Scots!):

Name: James Minty
Age: 77
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1794
Relationship: Son
Father's Name: William Minty
Mother's Name: Elizabeth Minty
Gender: Male
Where born: Elgin, Elginshire
Registration number: 135A
Registration District: Elgin Burgh
Civil Parish: Elgin
County: Moray
Address: 13 South Street
Occupation: Apprintice Clerk
ED: 7
Household Schedule Number: 54
Line: 1
Roll: CSSCT1871_25
Household Members:
Name Age
William Minty 49
Elizabeth Minty 49
James Minty 77
Jane L Minty 15
Margareta Minty 14
Marion L Minty 10
Thomas Hutchen 64
James Mackie 11
Jane Maskie 11

Clearly the James Minty mentioned is not the father of William. Indeed they indicate he is the son. But the age and calculated date of birth are screwy if this is meant to be the son of William and Elizabeth, who was born in 1853 and would have been 18 when the census was taken. He could have been home at 18 but why was the age so much in error?

190315:

From the Scotland's People website I downloaded today the image of the 1865 Valuation Roll in which William Minty is shown being a tenant at 13 South Street in Elgin Burgh, being a house and stable. He is shown as a Sheriff Officer and the valuation is £9 for the house and £4 for the stable, though the stable is shown as being vacant.

300517:

The issue raised above about the 1871 Census was a simple transcription error on the web. The version on FindMyPast shows James' age correctly as 17, not 77.

In the 1881 Census there are two grandchildren in the house that I cannot place: Marion Watson, aged 7, born in England and Thomas Minty, aged 3, born in Rathven, Banffshire. Clearly I have a lot to learn about this family and their marriages and families.

In 1891 it gets even worse. Now there are four grandchildren living with them, none of whom I can place:
Jessie Whyte Morrison, aged 14, domestic servant, from Elgin
George Morrison, aged 13, message boy, from Elgin
Elizabeth Morrison, aged 10, Scholar, from Elgin
and Thomas Smith Minty, aged 13 (same as above?) Scholar, from Elgin

there are also four boarders including a musicians and 3 machinists. Quite a menagerie.
Medical:
From death certificate
occupation Sheriff Officer (married to Elizabeth Logie)
cause of death - fracture to fingers for nine days, Tetanus for one day.
Father James Minty (deceased) and Jane Minty m.s Muir
Died at 13 South Street, Elgin, Elgin
informant - George Morrison, grandson

Notes
General:
141018:

There is a discrepancy in the number of children reported in this family on the 1911 Census versus the number that I show. The Census reports that they only had three children and all were alive at that time whereas I show four daughters. This needs to be sorted out. I suspect that the "Amy M. Minty reported on the 1901 Census and the "Margaret Minty reported on the 1911 Census are the same person. Therefore I am merging these two as Amy Margaret Minty today.

210222:

Got a message on Ancestry from MaryOM49 who corrected my death date for this man. I had accidentally given him the same date of death as his brother, James Alexander Minty. She advised that he actually died in March 1915 in Durham, South Shields, England based on the England Civil Registration Death Index. I am making this correction now offline and will correct the online information as time permits. I do not know at this time if she is a Minty relative.
