This may or may not explain his decision not to marry until he was 40 and the fact that he had no children.

211009: From The Deanery of Totnes CD HOYLES SAMUEL 02 08 1776 N MORRY ELIZABETH
There is obviously a problem here that needs to be sorted out. Earlier information shows her being buried before she is married!
300717:
The problem lies in the fact that I have been using the same death/burial information for both her and her step-grandmother, Elizabeth Matthews, the second wife of John Mory. The burial register does not indicate the marital status of the person who died and I was reluctantly attaching that record to Elizabeth Matthews. But on the strength of the evidence of the marriage of this Elizabeth Morey to Samuel Hoyles, I am removing this spurious death/burial information from here now and leaving it attached to Elizabeth Matthews. The latter may not be correct either but two wrongs never make two rights!

150818 (Lady's Day):
I have just discovered whilst examining the original registers of St. Clement Townstal on FindMyPast that Elizabeth Morry [sic] was not baptised in Stoke Gabriel as I had formerly thought but was the first child of John Morry [sic] christened in Dartmouth at St. Clement's. The information that I had previously on her christening came from the Mory.ftw file I downloaded from the LDS website many years ago which would have been based upon Aunt Jean's original submissions to the LDS databases more than likely and it gave her date of christening as October 29, 1729 (unless I mistranscribed the year) and the place as St. Gabriel's in Stoke Gabriel. This new evidence, which is an actual copy of the original church register, shows she was christened in October 29, 1727 (note, two years prior) and it occurred at St. Clement Townstal Church.
This is most significant because it backdates by two years the arrival of John Morry in Dartmouth from Stoke Gabriel and suggests that his first wife, Elizabeth Stone, did indeed accompany him there since she died or at least was buried in 1729. Her burial was in Stoke Gabriel but that could simply mean that her body was returned there for burial. It was only a short distance from Dartmouth and it was her ancestral home after all.

050811:
I found this marriage in the transcript of the St. Nicholas Church Register made by Gordon Handcock and I believe that it refers to this Elizabeth. Her mother was a Wills and that family was prominent in this parish. Handcock's writing is clear -- it was Morry and not some other spelling. This is the only Morry that shows up in this register. So I am inclined to think it must be she.
