Of note is the fact that there is no DPHW Vital Statistics record for the birth of a Maud Ophelia or an Ina in this family. I am not sure why these two names were omitted when it seems all the others were transcribed from the St. Luke's register for this exercise. The NGB website transcripts of births in the Petty Harbour records do not include them either. But the Petty Harbour C of E Death register includes a death date for Maud and says she was 6 when she died and also for Ina and says she was 4 at the time. I calculated their months of birth from their stated ages at time of death in the newspaper obituaries.

131109 from NGB: October 10, 1892 Gray, William Nicholas 25 of St. John's Morry, Jane Josephine Ferryland John Morry, Fanny Morry, Alice Morry, G. F. Martin Edward Botwood
Minister at Christening was John Noel according to C of E records in Ferryland.
Jane Josephine Morry's nickname was Josie according to my father, Thomas Morry in 1999. He knew her.
280413: NGB gives her gravestone data as having died June 9, 1942 at the age of 74. These numbers do not accord in any way with I had previously for her. Bears investigation. Gravestones are notoriously erroneous and transcriptions of them even more so.
140813: On the transcript of C of E register on NGB her name is given as Jane Josephina. I am not adding it as an AKA because I am sure it was a transcription error and not worth reporting.
George and Frances Gray are buried in section DJ along with son and daughter-in-law William Nichols and Josephine Morry Gray
250815:
Josie inherited virtually all of her late husband's substantial estate but did not live to enjoy it as she passed away only six months later, some say of a broken heart. They were reputed to be very close. At the time of her death, her estate was passed to Fanny, who lived with her and presumably nursed both William and Josie in their final days. But one has to wonder if she was entirely in her right mind when she wrote out this short handwritten "will" because she neglected to leave anything to anyone else, including her other unmarried sister, Flossy. Fanny may have told her that she would look after all of that when the time came, but if so, there is no evidence to the effect that she did as Flossy was also left out of Fanny's will. I have the feeling that there was some animosity between Fanny and Flossy which may or may not have been shared with Josie.
A transcript of Josie's will is found in the Media Gallery. Enid O'Brien obtained it from the Supreme Court Probate office yesterday and scanned it for me. This is an important document because it explains how Fanny wound up having so much money to leave to charities when she died. It was not her money but rather that of the Gray's. It is also important in that it shows that Josie's estate was considertably larger than that of her late husband only six months before, largely due to the fact that the family house was evidently in her name. The total amount of this will would be well over $1.2 Million dollars in today's money. Somehow, Fanny, who was not considered a generous person by nature and spent little on herself, managed to dispose of almost half of her vast inheritance before she died almost two years later. What became of this money is a mystery.
080116:
I have added St. Luke's as the place of Christening of the children in this family because it is most logical since the events were recorded at Petty Harbour C of E registry, not at the Cathedral in St. John's.
261121:
I am amazed that I have never recorded this important bit of family lore on Josie's Notes page before. She was the "Mrs. Gray" who travelled to Dartmouth sometime between the wars and took down the inscriptions on several family gravestones in the churchyard of St. Saviours Church. Copies of these transcripts appear in numerous forms taken from her original recording, including a version prepared by Nimshi Crewe, Provincial Archivist at the time. This is the substance of her transcripts as it appears in most forms:
"Sacred to the Memory of Mary Morry, the wife of Matthew Morry, Merchant, of this town who was the sincere Christian the faithful wife, the affectionate Mother and the friend, universally beloved and sincerely lamented who departed this life on 29 October 1796 Aged 46 years.
Also sacred to the memory of Priscilla daughter of the above named Matthew and Mary Morry and wife of Wm Sweetland of Ferryland in the Island of Newfoundland but now of Dartmouth, Merchant, Who no less virtuous and esteemed departed this life on the 19 day of December 1820 aged 37 years."
The existence of this transcript is of vital importance because this gravestone was split asunder by a wayward German bomb in WWI and the missing fragment prevents a full understanding of the inscription now.
Other inscriptions that she recorded at the same time included:
"Sacred to the memory of William Oxenham who died 9 January 1805 Aged 75 years. Also Mary his daughter who died 2 January 1832 aged 76 years. Also Tomasine [sic] Dunsterville the deary beloved wife of James H. Carter, who departed this life on 12 Sept 1835 aged 40 years"
and
"Sacred to the memory of Priscilla, wife of Thos Silly who died 26 Jan 1847 aged 28 years. Also Benjamin Sweetland her brother Who with his wife and child was lost at sea Sept 1846 ad 32 years. Also Matthew Moray [sic] Sweetland who died at sea July 29 1852 aged 39 years. Also Mary Moray [sic] Sweetland who died 30 May 1854 Aged 33 years."
Note that Mrs. Gray omitted a good deal of the wording on the memorial to William Oxenham and kin and could very well have done so on the other inscriptions. Here is a direct copy of the plaque on the wall in St. Saviours Church:
"SACRED
TO THE MEMORY OF
MR, WM, OXENHAM, WHO DIED 9TH JANY, 1805,
AGED 75 YEARS.

May 17, 2002: There was an email exchange involving Bridget Smith, a granddaughter of Peter and Bridget living in BC, and Enid O'Brien and I in April 28 after Bridget shared her Family Tree Maker file of the Descendants of Peter Frederick Morry. This helped clear up a number of uncertainties concerning discrepancies between dates in her file and dates originally given to me by Enid, based upon earlier information provided to herby people who spoke Peter's wife Bridget late in her life.
Based on the exchange below I am inclined to change Jane's date and place of birth from what is shown in the Petty Harbour Church records. Family information is usually more reliable. I expect the Church records refer to the Christening, not the birth.

Chris and Enid,
I will call Mona who is Jane's daughter and see if I can verify the date of birth and place of birth. My mother was adamant about it being April 1st but the jury is still out on the year and place. Will get back to you as soon as possible.
If you can believe it, I only started doing this "little" project as a class assignment for my youngest daughter several years ago. Since contacting you Chris I have become almost obsessed with it!
Take care,
Bridget

Chris
I have just spoken with my mother and the birthdate for Jane Windsor is April 1, 1893 in Corner Brook. At the time Augustus drowned Bridget was expecting Jane. Also, Augustus was born and died in St. John's. Peter and Bridget had moved there as he was running or owned a store.
That should just about clear up all your questions.
Bridget
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In another email on the same date Bridget added: "the marriage records for Jane show the spelling of her middle name as Windsor and that is what her son gave to me as well."

Note error in name so date might be equally suspect.
300112: The church record of birth evidently gives Ferryland as the address. This would have been where the baptism took place but the actual birth was more likely in Caplin Bay where the family lived before moving to BC. I have some trouble accepting the Corner Brook address for the birth as there is no reason to believe the family was ever there.

Geoffrey Williams' email 366 dated 10/08/00 refers:
"And their daughter (referring to Howard Leopold and Marion Powderell) Jean Catherine Morey married Jack Funkhouser. Jean was living in UT during the 1980s and is the KLN Gabriel's genealogist:

Also in 377 Geoffrey Williams posted a letter from Aunt Jean to Alma La France which I later sent to Lanny with some annotations:
"From: Chris Morry [chris.morry@sympatico.ca] Sent: January 31, 2001 11:51 PM To: Lanny Morry Subject: Letter from Aunt Jean to another Morry researcher
Hi La:
You may never have seen this as it was in the Morey emails before you began. It is a letter that Alma La France, a well known Morey researcher sent me in response to an enquiry she had made about Aunt Jean. When I told her that she had passed away she thought I might like to see this letter. It doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know but gives a few clues on the extent to which her research in and around Dartmouth was carried out.
It also shows how many misconceptions about the Morrys Aunt Jean was hamstrung by. For example, she seemed to be having a hard time accepting the Morry spelling was only one of several legitimate versions our ancestors used. She also seemed to think that Matthew Morry came to Newfoundland in the 1750s. Hardly likely since she says he was born in 1758! Actually she made a mistake there. Her own records and those of others show the actual date of birth to be 28 March 1750. There are other transcription errors in this account including the date of death ofher own father (1948!). Just goes to show how careful you have to be about accepting anyone's information without counter-verification.
The daughter she mentions returning to England was Priscilla Ann, who died and was buried at St. Saviour's, 19 December 1820. She was the one who married William Sweetland and thus brought that surname into the family as a second Christian name of many of the men thereafter. He must have been a very important businessman to have been so well respected. Worth a look see some time.
The earlier John Morry is a mystery. Probably a relation but how I don't know. The German group is a red herring and I wouldn't waste any time on it. I've known about German Morrys for some time but like the Japanese, the Russians and the Aleut Eskimos, they are only Morrys in name, not blood relations.
Anyway, the information about where she did her searches is one more bit of information to help focus your next visit.
Chris

Hi Chris:
Here is a copy of the letter from Mrs. Jean Morry Funkhouser, Box 622, Parowan UT 84761, to Helen McKinney.
"The first of the family of MORRY that I have record of is my 5th gr grandfather John MORRY who m. Priscilla HARVEY 22 Dec 1736 in Dartmouth, Devon England. This marriage record is on the St. Clements church records there and the records of his children are on the St. Saviours church records also in Dartmouth. His son Matthew MORRY b 28 Mar 1758 m. Mary Grahm on the 1 Mar 1773 in the same parish. He came to Newfoundland, Canada on the 1750's and made several trips back and forth fromthere to England. After the death of his wife 3 Nov 1796 he went to Newfoundland to live permanently. He was a merchant there and had ships in the fishing business. His sons were sea captains who traded between the Channel Island, England and Newfoundland, and eventually all settled in Newfoundland and their descendants spread to Canada and the US. One of his daughters returned to England.
There was one MORRY listed on the above-mentioned Church records; JOHN MORRY who m. Elizabeth Matthews 5 Feb 1732, and their children's births, deaths, and their own deaths are listed on the records. These are the earliest recordings although the records go back as far as 1586 in some of the three parishes of Dartmouth; St Saviours, St Clements and Townstal. I have had 10 other parishes in the immediate area searched with no mention of the family MORRY.
I have found in the LERCH FAMILY HISTORY a family of MORRY: George Wilhelm MORRY, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Tollin MORRY, was born 4 Mar 1700 at Andresoberg, Saxony, Germany. Immigrated from Saxony 12 Mar 1721, land in NY 16 Nov 1721, was married to Anna Engle 6 Oct 1722.
I have accounted for all the children of the family group of Matthew (#2 on chart #2); except for a Thomas Graham who left the Dartmouth area in the early 1800's. I suspect that he also went to the Americas perhaps the NY area. I have family groups for all couples on the pedigree chart.
John MORRY or MOREY b ca 1711 of Dartmouth, Devon m 22 Feb 1736 d 16 Jul 1751 at Dartmouth, Devon England m Priscilla Harvey. b ca 1715, d 28 Jun 1865 at Dartmouth, Devon.

Dear Alma,
Thanks for the email. Nice to read the old letters, which piece the clans together. These KLN English Maunder Moreys go back pretty much tothe start of Church of England records.
Kind regards, Geoffrey

Just a quick note to record that in 1959 (according to a letter from her to Dad Morry in the Nimshi Crewe Papers) Aunt Jean was paying a Rev. Yoder, presumably in Salt Lake City, to pull all the Morry records from the Petty Harbour records that he could find on the sources at his disposal. I'm not sure if they had microfilms that early on or if their records for Newfoundland took the form of transcribed copies of church registers.

Jeanie and Chris grew up a few doors down from each other. They went to the same school together. And yesterday they got ready for their wedding in those same homes that held the beginning of their story.
After the most lovely and calm morning with family, they had a first look in Bannerman park and then spent some time with their little crew at Government House for photos.
They planned such a laid back and calm day that it allowed us all to have an impromptu break to warm up in Coffee Matters. While Jeanie and Chris were sipping their drinks and waiting for the feeling to come back into their hands, the most amazing snowfall began outside the window. Me and Jeanie literally squealed with excitement!
This began an afternoon of freezing our butts off for the most amazing little adventure in the snow, and seriously my heart was singing the whole time!
Once dark fell, the evening began with their lovely ceremony at Baly Haly followed by a cozy reception.
Later, when it was time for their first dance, the surprise that Chris, his brothers and I had been keeping secret all day was finally revealed.
Instead of using the soundtrack of Steve Maloney's song that Jeanie chose, Chris surprised his new wife by having Steve himself show up to play the song for them live with his guitar.
This day was full of happy tears, beautiful family bonds, and so much sweet simple love. Congratulations J+C, I was incredibly honoured to have ended off my season with you.
