John's boy Graham got the

I believe this was an error on Dad Morry's part and that another son other than Graham was the one to applied to join the Constabulary because by this time Graham was chronically ill with TB.

Notes
General:
His gravestone reads: "Graham Joseph, son of John & Elizabeth Morry, died 28 September 1945; 21 yrs." Prior to receiving this information (from Nfld. Genealogical Soc.) I had not been aware of his existence!
Note spelling of his mothers name with a "z" which contradicts our information.
Roberta Sullivan (email 24/05/01) shows his birthdate as the same as Gerald's (Nov. 29, 1924). I did not know they were twins and am not sure that she hasn't made a transcription error perhaps. Needs to be checked.
230310: Geoffrey Williams pulled the 1945 Census information from the NGB website and Graham was not shown. I suspect the Census was taken prior to his death so he must have been in the TB Hospital in St. John's at the time of the Census. In regard to the observation above about Roberta Sullivan making an error in the entry for the birth date of brother Gerald, this is also supported by the Census because it shows Gerald as being 18 in 1945. Therefore born in 1926 or 27, not 1924. But I have his correct date of birth from the family in any event.

Interesting: Letter from "Lena" to her mother from Caplin Bay, 18 Apr 1898, Calvert, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. This letter is of interest for several reasons. It shows that even though Helena's father, Robert Morry was still alive (he died the following month) Helena and her mother and sister had apparently already moved closer to town and were then living in Kilbride with Robertha her sister and George Le Messurier. In addition, it is notable that she took a little dig at Henry Windsor for having married Sarah, 14 years his junior, who was travelling on a steamer back home from town with Lena.

In an email from Enid O'Brien dated 2/11/99:
Helena Morry was baptised Jan 5, 1880 privately (Petty Hr Records) and was the daughter of Robert Morry (son of Matthew Morry/Ann Sanders/Saunders) and Victoria Matilda Maria Winsor (daughter of Henry Winsor and Ann Hill).
[NB: I don't know where Enid found this date but it cannot be correct because she was not born until October 17, 1880]
Note: Ann Hill is the daughter of Ann (Carter) Hill/Sweetland/Morry. Also, of note is that Elizabeth Sarah Winsor married to Robert's brother, John Henry Morry, is the sister of Victoria (two brothers and two sisters). All through the records you will find Winsors married to Morrys, Morrys married to LeMessuriers, Morrys married to Carters and Carters married to LeMessuriers. I would think there are a couple of reasons for this (a) They were Church of England in a predominant Roman Catholic population (b) They were the merchants in the area (c) They would not want to have property go out of the family. Helena Morry married Francis Ernest LeMessurier (this was his second marriage, her first) and they had three children; he had one at least from his first marriage.
Also, of note regarding Helena Morry is her sister, Roberta Morry (both dgts of Robert Morry/Victoria Winsor) married Frank Ernest LeMessurier's uncle, George Wm. LeMessurier. After Roberta died he married Marion Bradshaw. Frank was the son of Peter Wilson LeMessurier and Frances "Fannie" Hutchings, dgt of Monier Hutchings. Both George Wm LeMessurier and Peter Wilson LeMessurier are sons of George Hare LeMessurier and Elizabeth Brown.

In an email from Anne LeMessurier Lilly on August 28, 2001, she suggests her granny (Helena Morry LeMessurier) was born in Caplin Bay in October 1880. My records (based on Enid's information) showed she was born in January 1880.
"My Granny LeMessurier was born Helena Morry in Caplin Bay (now Calvert) in October, 1880. She grew up in Ferryland. Her mother was Victoria Matilda Winsor from Aquafort and her father was Robert Morry from Ferryland. Helena was their last child."
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In an email from Fredi Caines on June 15, 2007 she recounted this story: "I found a picture of aunt Vic's mother and father myself and Eric the other day. Looks like we were out trouting. When I was little I can remember picking them up with Uncle Eric and cousin Lina would sit in a rocking chair in the back of the big truck and we would all be going on a picnic or trouting in a small pond on the road to Cape Spear."
Earlier Fredi and her Mom, Aunt Phyllis, had both told me that it was Helena Morry LeMessurier who had inherited much of the Morry heirlooms that wound up in the hands of T. G. Morry's two maiden sisters and that these eventually made their way into the hands of Vic. Heaven only knows where they are now (most likely in Greece with her daughter). Helena was also the one who gave Nimshi Crewe photos of the old Holdsworth House and of John Henry Morry and his daughters and nieces (including Helena) in front of that house. These photos, now in the N&L Provincial Archives, would have been taken about 1895. She also gave him the silhouette of Lieut. Henry Sweetland, RN, during a visit and interview on March 11, 1960 and this was subsequently deposited with the Newfoundland Museum.
Enid O'Brien believes she is the one who wrote the note that perpetuates old and misleading family lore concerning relationships between the Morrys and the Scottish Royal family and also Sir Hans Sloane, founder of the British Museum. There is no evidence to support either "history" and, to the contrary, much evidence to indicate that these connections are impossible.
270213: It has now been conclusively determined by handwriting comparison with another letter between "Aunt Frances" (Emily Frances Victoria Morry) and Dad Morry in 1934 that it was she and not Helena who wrote the misleading note mentioned above. But Aunt Frances did say to Dad Morry that Helena could tell him a lot more about the family, suggesting that Frances learned what she was passing on from Helena originally.
140813: No way of knowing when the actual birth took place as it was not recorded on the birth/baptismal record as transcribed on NGB website. What is given here is an error on another transcript which took the baptismal date as the birth date.
According to Vic, Helena, her mother, was part of the WPA (Women's Patriotic Assoc.) during the war and a personal friend of Lady Davidson, wife of the Governor, who was head of the WPA. Helena earned a medal for her work, including the knitting of well over 100 pairs of socks for the troops overseas.
020713:
The bible, which was almost certainly the property of Helena, and if not was without a doubt the property of her daughter, Victoria, gives the date of marriage as 28 July 1910. While the records for other events are also at odds with those found in other reliable sources, it is incomprehensible how this date can be in error. Gordon Badcock and his wife Lola warned me of this. They must have been made aware of the fact that none of the information found in the book was to be trusted. But it is bizarre to say the least, as Vic's memory has always been a marvel and she remains active and aware right up to this summer at the age of 99.
080116:
It seems from the Vital Statistics transcript downloaded from the Family Search website that it was recorded at the Petty Harbour C of E register and not the Cathedral in St. John's. The place the baptism took place is not recorded but is assumed to be Ferryland since she was born in Caplin Bay (Calvert).
240722:
An error on the 1935 Census has her listed as "Eleanor A" Le Messurier.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
020823:
I believe that the gravestone I just found today on Canadian Gravestone's website is most likely to have the correct date of birth: Oc t. 17 1880. The other birth and baptism dates given here are erroneous because the Petty Harbour record reports only a private date of birth (5 Jan. 1880) which was almost certainly in error and was most likely 5. Jan. 1881. On this church record the only credible date is the date on which she was welcomed into the church - 19 June 1881 - and there is no reason why so much time should have passed between her baptism and her welcoming into the church. Therefore I believe that she was probably born and privately baptised (possibly due to being very ill at birth) on 5 Jan. 1881 and welcomed into the church on 19 June 1881. I am changing these dates today to accord with these deductions.
As to her date of death, that seems correct on all official sources including the gravestone.

Many of the transcriptions of church records on NGB and elsewhere confuse birth dates for baptismal dates and vice versa. From what I can now see on the NGB site, there is a baptism or christening date for Henry Sweetland Morry on the LDS microfilm transcript on 27 Sept. 1823. I suspect that Enid's birth date pf 01 June 1821 is correct because there was often a long lapse of time between birth and christenings in those days due to an absence of a minister in the area to perform the ceremony. So this "alternate birth" date should be considered as a Christening date. He is listed in Lovell's 1871 Directory for Ferryland as a fisherman.
No Morry shows up in the Voters List for Ferryland 1840-1859 until John's name appears in 1849 with "North Side" given as his specific domicile. In 1855 and 1859 he is joined on the list by his brothers Henry (South Side) and Arthur (North Side) in that order, who evidently moved from Caplin Bay at that time (Arthur's name appeared on the list for Caplin Bay before that but not Henry's).
According to a transcription that appears on the NGB website which was submitted by Roberta Sullivan, his gravestone in the old Ferryland non-denominational cemetery reads:
ERR BY JOHN MORRY FOR HIS FATHER HENRY, DIED 11 AUGUST 1897 AGED 76 YRS. ALSO, YEARS, AND HIS BROTHER ARTHUR, DIED 1898 AGED 28 YEARS AND HIS BROTHER FREDERICK 1890 AGED 29 YEARS.
This was first indication I had of sons, John, Arthur and Frederick. The above transcription is not entirely complete or accurate. See my reading of the stone below.

The Rescue of The Heather
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
Late in March 1865, the brigantine Heather in charge of Captain Ash was returning to St. John's from a foreign voyage when she became jammed in ice off Cape Spear. Fearing the vessel would be crushed, four ofthe crew abandoned ship against their master's wishes.
It turned out their foreboding was right and about 1:30 on Mar. 26, Captain Ash and the three remaining crew members noticed that the ice was carrying the vessel onto the rocks. They too abandoned ship just minutes before she hit the cliffs. The vessel did not sink however, but the ice had broken up and they were minutes before she hit the cliffs. The vessel didn't sink however, but the ice had broken up and they were unable to get back to her.
On individual pans of ice, Capt. Ash and his three companions driftedsouth during the night and all the next day. By nightfall Tuesday they were without food and shelter of any kind and were concerned for the worsening weather. Mate Morris and the two seamen managed to get onone large ice pan but were separated from the captain by a large lakeof water.
By Wednesday morning they were as far south as Ferryland and realisedthe chances of being spotted beyond this point would be very slim. Asluck would have it however, a Mrs. Carter of Ferryland happened to glance out her window as she went about her work and spotted the men drifting by on the ice floe. She immediately spread the news and Father Murphy, the parish priest, called for volunteers to go into the ice filled seas to attempt a rescue.
Ten brave fishermen of Ferryland manned a boat and steered it throughthe ice to the rescue. They were Francis Geary, John Costello, William Morry, Marmaduke Clowe, Henry Morry, Richard Sullivan, Thomas Moore, James Sweeney, Peter Kelly and John O'Keefe.
They picked up the mate and seamen from the nearest pan first, and returned to shore with them. Again they put out to sea and headed in thedirection of Captain Ash, however a storm was beginning to whip up and no sooner had they taken the captain on board when the storm broke.A strong gale drove their boat off to the sea, much to the horror of their families and friends looking on from the shore.
The gale raged all night and by daylight Thursday, the boat was fullyforty miles out to sea. By Thursday afternoon the wind abated and they somehow managed to make land at Witless Bay, after suffering greatly from exposure.
Captain Ash was in particularly bad condition, after three days and nights in the open. He was taken to St. John's by a crew from Witless Bay and lost no time in commending the ten men for their bravery

The following letter from Howard Morry of Ferryland refers to
M. F. Harrington's story of a shipwreck-"Heather in the Ice" -
published in our March/ 1957, issue:
"I was much interested in the story of the loss of the
Heather. Wm. Morry and Henry Morry were my father's
uncles. There was one name omitted from the crew of the
rescuers-Wm. Morry. The lady who saw the men on the ice
was Mrs. Wm. Carter, mother of Mrs. Alderdice. The man
Marmaduke Clow, I think, was an Englishman. He was a
Church of England man, I know. He married a Miss
Johnston of Ferryland. Her father was Blacksmith there. I
think their name was formerly spelled Clough and was
corrupted to Clow and now Clowe. There are several families
of relations of his here now by that name."

Just to correct some imperfections in the abbreviated transcription of the gravestone as recorded by Roberta Sullivan and contributed to the NGB website years ago, here is an exact transcription taken by me from the Stonepics photograph of the stone which shows every word. At present the stone has slipped further into the ground and the reference to Frederick is no longer visible:
"Erected by John Morry In Memory Of His Beloved Father Henry, Who Died Augt 11 1897 Aged 76 Years _____________ Also His Brother Arthur Died June AD 1898 Aged 28 Years _____________ Also His Brother Frederick Who Was Lost At Sea March 1890 Aged 29 Years"

This anecdote about "Harry" appears in a letter written by Dad Morry to William Sweetland Morry in BC on March 26, 1928:
"Uncle Harry, your grandfather's brother, was a very strong man, over six ft. and about 240 pounds of bone and gristle. He got as lazy as could be in his old days, but he was a very interesting man to spin a yarn. He and another man, called Ryan, were to a wreck one time, and Uncle Harry passed one hundred barrels of flour over his head from the lower deck to Ryan, who pitched them on to the top deck (a barrel weighs 196lbs.)That happened over 80 years ago, and it is spoken of to this day as the wreck that Morry and Ryan salved all the flour from. I don't know if this is interesting to you or not, but there is not much else to write about. Uncle Harry also figured in the rescue of a ship-wrecked crew about a year or so after the flour thing, when he and seven other men went out to rescue the crew whose ship was stuck in the ice and sunk. It came to snow and blow, but the crew from the shore went out in an open boat - they were two days and nights out in an open boat in all the frost and snow, and tho they were frost-bitten, they saved the crew and brought them into Bay Bull, thirty miles from here."
