071108: Little is known about Jamie's father's uncle Morgan except that he existed. The Census information in Glenawinna include him in the family as an adult living at home with his aged mother and two unmarried adult brothers. After that there is no record of him. Presumably he moved away after his mother died and Cornelius took over the farm. There is no birth record for him in Toomevara.

261009: The mystery surrounding Morgan continues. The birth records shown here seem to be for a different Morgan, that one born in Portroe. That one was the son of William alright but his mother's name was Honora McLaughlin. That is not correct for our Morgan. I recall having heard Jamie say that she thought her grandfather was married twice (but not her great-grandfather about whom she knew nothing). The fact is that Morgan's father, William, died before the 1901 Census, when Morgan and two of his brothers were still living with Eliza. So I think we have the wrong birth record for Morgan.

In addition, I am not convinced that it was our Morgan who married Kate Lawlor in Nenagh. It could be. But if so I think he and she died or emigrated soon afterwards. There is no 1911 Census return anywhere in Ireland for a Morgan O'Brien that is sufficiently close to the details on our man to accept and certainly none with a wife named Kate.

130513: Eureka! Jamie is visiting Ireland at this time and today she visited St. Joseph Churchyard cemetery where her parents are buried, There she found several more gravestones of family members including her great uncles Terence, Thomas and Morgan (the latter two on the same stone). There it shows that Morgan's wife's name was indeed Kate, though it does not give her maiden name. Nevertheless this is strong evidence that I did find the correct marriage record. Though why they do not appear on the 1911 Census is still a mystery since they were both alive at the time. It could be that they were living with Thomas on the family farm and therefore thought that it was not appropriate to be included in the census as non land owners.

Although the townland of residence at the time of his death is not given for Morgan, since Morgan and his wife appear to be buried in the same plot with his brother Thomas and his wife, or at least they are all memorialised on the same stone, and since Thomas's abode is given as Grawn at the time of his death, I suspect that they were all living together on the one farm in Grawn at the time of their deaths.

WRONG!!

Already disproved. I finally found the 1911 Census record for Morgan and his household on the Irish National Archives website. Digitising the 1911 census as well as the 1901 census remains a work in progress and evidently this census return was indexed since the last time I looked. It shows the following:

Morgan O'Brien, Head, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, Age 52, Farmer, Married, Where Born - Tipperary, Irish language - Blank

Kate O'Brien, Wife, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, Age 32, No Profession, Married 8 Years - No children born or living, Where born - Tipperary, Irish language - Blank

Norah O'Brien, Sister, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, Age 30, No Profession, Single, Where born - Tipperary, Irish language - Blank

Michael Ryan, Servant, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, Age 30, Farm Labourer, Single, Where born - Tipperary, Irish language - Blank

Hugh Ryan, Servant, Roman Catholic, Read and Write, Age 41, Farm Labourer, Single, Where born - Tipperary, irish language - Blank

In other words, Morgan was working his own farm, or possibly Kate's by inheritance, and was not living with his brother Thomas, nor vice-versa.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing of all in this census is that there is a sister named Norah O'Brien living with them. This is the first that I have ever heard of her. She did not appear on the 1901 Census when three of the boys, including Morgan, were shown still living at home with their mother, Eliza. She may have been working as a domestic somewhere else at the time or even at boarding school perhaps. I have added her despite my reservations. She is too young to be a child of Eliza Reidy, who would have been around 59 when Norah was ostensibly born. There are family rumours that William O'Brien did marry a second time. If this were so, she could be a child by his second wife. But so far I have no evidence to support this.

280807:

On the CD Index of Griffith's Valuation there are very few O'Brien's living in Aghnameadle, the parish name for the area surrounding Toomyvara. In fact there are only three: Morgan Sr. and Jr. and William. Jamie knows that her grandfather's name was Thomas (Tom) and that he had at least two brothers, Morgan and Terrence. But they were born too late to be landowners in the valuation. So it seems more than likely that the two Morgan's, father and son, are Jamie's great grand uncle and great great grandfather. William was her great grandfather and a brother of Morgan Jr.

290108: From Toomevara parish Register: 1847, Feb 15. Wm., of Morgan O'Brien & Anne Gleeson John Gleeson & Anne O'Brien. Bunacum ? 2-6

There were three Morgan O'Briens having children in Toomevara all at the same time. I am speculating that they were three first cousins, all first born sons, whose paternal grandfather was named Morgan. I have chosen this one as the ancestor in direct line to Jamie because he had a son named William, the name of Jamie's g. grandfather. None of the others did as far as is known at this time. The 2-6 was the fee paid 2 shillings and 6 pence.

It seems he may also be the Morgan O'Brien who leased a house and land in Ballybeg to Mrs. Quinlan in Griffith's. No way to tell for sure.

030617:

Today I found online a book of grave transcriptions from Kilkeary Cemetery prepared in 1981 for the Ormond Historical Society by Denise Foulkes.

This is the cemetery where Jamie's O'Brien ancestors are buried. One grave and epitaph I had not seen in photos taken there by her last year (2016) is the following pertaining to Morgan O'Brien, who died 22 June 1817 at 46 years of age. While these dates do not conform precisely with what I had expected for this Morgan O'Brien, her second great grandfather, I think that, on balance, it is likely to be he entombed here.

Here is a transcript of the epitaph:
"This tomb, sacred to the memory of Morgan O'Brien, Esq., was erected by his dearly beloved wife. In the various relations of life he maintained the character of a strictly honest and honourable man. He was a tender parent and affectionate husband. By those who knew him best his memory will be long revered. He died on the 22nd June 1817 in the 46th year of his age.

Underneath are also deposited the remains of their aimiable daughter Frances Maria Harding who died on the 9th Dec 1821 in the 19th year of her age. Her premature death will be deplored by all who were acquainted with her captivating endearing disposition."

The fact that they are buried in a tomb and that he is referred to as Esg., not to mention the very well written epitaph, suggest that he was a man of some considerable means.
