Transcript of a Christmas card from John P. to Kay O'Brien Morry on 29 Dec. 1994: "Dear Kay, Just a note to thank you for the nice Christmas card. I'm John P., your Uncle Bill's oldest son. I met your brother Sean in'47 thereabouts. He was returning from Australia where he had a job as a underwater welder. I was much impressed at the time - I had re-turned home from the Pacific and was discharged from the Marines in Dec.45. I worked for my father in the Quarry where he was Foreman. We lived in a large house on a farm in the Heart of Chicago as we had a cow, horses, chickens & ducks. This Quarry is only three miles South of the Loop, the "Loop" being downtown Chicago. My Father retired from the Quarry in '49 and he bought a farm up in Wisconsin with my mom and the youngest of seven, my brother Joe. They sold the farm and moved back to their house in Chicago in '55. Growing up in Chicago was a great experience for me, I was born in April '26. I remember all the relatives and friends that visited my folks in "our" big house by the Quarry. My Mom was a Hoban, Ann, from Castlebar, County Mayo. I believe her and Dad married in '24. When my Dad first left Ireland he went to Canada and worked as a lumberjack for a while before coming down to Chicago. I'll close for now, Kay, I wish I had more specific dates for events. The best to you and all your family, Your Cousin John"

It is possible this is a different person but the location of residence is the same as in 1939 when he was listed there as a journalist. Seems to be more than a coincidence. But where are his wife and family whom he was supposed to have in South Africa?.

Notes
General:
I corrected the birth date given by PJ (8 March 1887) to conform with records of baptism (9 March 1889) provided by TNFHF to Jane Leahy 17 July 2000. But their transcription of records could be wrong so this should be verified.

Sponsors at Baptism were Dan Hough and Kate Harty (TNFHF).

P.J. Telecon 02/09/00:

Said that John had two daughters, one married to a Mr. Preston. John left Ireland at the age of 15 or 16 and never returned. He was first a war correspondent for the Köln Post and later moved to South Africa and died there many years later.

According to Jamie, one of John's grandchildren (a Preston) attended university in Italy [actually Auntie Elizabeth said Oxford] and met a student from the US whose name was Quinlisk. It turned out they were directly related. The student later met with Jamie's Auntie Elizabeth in London and recounted this story to her.

220420:

In a letter from Aunt Elizabeth to Jamie, date unknown (events mentioned suggest late November 1987), parts of which Jamie gave me in April 2020:

"I have two great grand nephews at Oxford, one the youngest grandson of my brother Bill R.I.P. from Chicago, Mark Quinlisk, and a grandson of my eldest brother John P. Quinlisk R.I.P. David Preston from S. Africa. They met by chance at Harvard as David knew his beloved grandfather John P. Quinlisk must be related. Strange world. My eldest brother never visited Ireland after WWI, as he had been told by the family he must not go home wearing soldiers' uniform, by some of my relations, who could not understand that anyone living & working in England HAD to join up. Just as in WWII your uncle Tom had to join up. It was all very sad, but I am so pleased to meet up with dear kind John's grandson. Unfortunately, both young men are going to the Perugia University after Christmas. They did not seem to be interested in Ireland. David's mother, my niece Winifred Quinlisk, is a widow. Her husband was an explorer and until he was killed in a plane accident a couple of years ago. Winifred's sister, Eleanor is also a widow they all live in S. Africa. My brother John loved your dear mother, who was only a child during World War I & when he came to see me in France in 1925 she was the only member of the family he seemed interested in. I do not blame him for not going to Ireland. His wife was a lovely woman her people lived in Yorkshire & there are ??? by some still at Yorkshire that David & Mark visit. I hope they will come to see me again.

No doubt you have read about our dreadful Tempest. The lovely big great Acacia tree in the centre of my garden died [?] & I miss it greatly. Watched the storm from 3:00 AM when I was awakened by the unusual noise. It was really frightening but fascinating to watch the large branches [?] of a double trunked tree being buffeted in every direction, The branches and the other trees in my garden appeared to be doing a mad crazy ballet! I was afraid the tree would fall on my flat but luckily at 6:30 it gave up the struggle & fell into the next door's gardens. It kept a lot of light from my flat but its shade was very welcome in the summer when we get such a thing as summer! Today is brilliant but it is very cold.

Well I hope you will have a very happy Christmas & not too much snow. I will be with my friends at Folkestone, where I spent my last weekend & enjoyed very pleasant weather.

There was a shooting holocaust at King's Cross Station recently & that on top of the terrorist horror at Enniskillen brought much sadness & grief.

Again, very many thanks for your very kind thoughtful gift & my love to you all.

Aunt Elizabeth

P.S. Please forgive this badly constructed letter & I hope you can make sense out of it. My poor old typewriter has given up at last. And my writing not so good since I broke my wrist."

220420:

This man is a real enigma. He seems to have had two wives or women by whom he had a child or children but there is no evidence that he ever married. And moreover there is no evidence short of family lore that he ever travelled to South Africa. In fact, there is good evidence that he was in Bromley, Kent in 1939 and possibly as late as 1965. So when, if ever, did he go to South Africa?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
121122:

Here is a revised transcript of a letter sent to Jamie by her Aunt Elizabeth sometime around 1987 (events mentioned suggest late November 1987) in which she mentions among other things an encounter with two young men she believed to be her grandnephews but who I believe were con men. I received this week a letter returned to Jamie from her sister Eve in which Jamie had written on the back of a partial photocopy of her Aunt Elizabeth's letter on 11 March 1888. It seems from Jamie's letter that she may have sent a second copy to her sister Mary but I have never seen the entire letter from her Aunt Elixabeth, only this photocopy of what appears to be the second and last page of that letter.
