• Property: House and Land rated for 7 shillings 1 pence rate, 1843, Behamore, Cloughjordan, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland. Note that this could be property occupied by any one of four Patt Quinlisks who were alive at this time so I am copying this record to all three of them. I have no idea which of them is the correct land holder.

The folowing information was found on a photograph sent to us by Jane Leahy on August 4, 2000 showing the Memorial Pat erected in Clougjordan RC Cemetary in honour of his parents, wife, siblings and children, where he, his son and grandson are also memorialised. It says:
"ERECTED BY PATK. QUINLISK of Roscrea in Memory of His Wife CATHERINE alias HEENAN Who Died Octr 12th 1869 Aged 45 Yrs. Also His Father PATK. Who Died May 13th 1861 Aged 75 Years. John Quinlisk Silverstream, Cloughjordan Died 4 July, 1927. His Son Pat Died 10 Jan. 1984. R.I.P."
20/02/01
I have a suspicion that Patrick married a second time after his wife Johana died at age 36 because there can be no other explanation for the ages of Ellen and others of her siblings who were born long after Johana's reputed date of death in 1825. The only other possibility is that this Pat is not the "Big Pat" whom Ellen and the other ancestors of Jamie and Jane are descended from. I have merely assumed this because PJ Quinlisk took both Jane and us to see his grave marker. This is one of the biggest questions to be answered in this family tree.
290507: Fergus Kennedy has collected a great deal of information from websites and other online sources pertaining to the earliest records of Quinlisks in the Cloughjordan area. One of the earliest accounts is the Tithe records of Oct. 29, 1823. This preceded the Roman Catholic emancipation in 1829. Before emancipation, RCs were forced to pay a tithe to the Church of Ireland even though they were not of that faith. Records are spotty and incomplete - not every land owner was nailed for this unjust tax. But in Cloughjordan three were. One was a Patrick in the townland then known as Behamore Smith (now Silverstream). Two were named Michael (one was Jr., obviously the son of the other one) and both lived in Townfields, which is on the Toomyvara side of Cloughjordan away from the Silverstream/Behamore area where all the recent generations of Quinlisks live. The Patrick who paid the tithe in Behamore Smith was most likely this man. The two Michaels are not known for sure but I suspect it was this Patrick's brother and nephew.

19/02/01 There is no solid evidence to connect this Patrick Quinlisk to the John Quinlisk I believe to be the father of "Big Pat" except location and presumed date of birth based on wife's age noted on gravestone. The names John and Patrick are probably the most common names in Ireland and this is a real stretch but is tentatively offered as a relationship for now.
I am only estimating his date of birth from that of his spouse. I have no evidence of this.

050714:
Something needs to be clarified concerning the church attended by the families of Whelans/Phelans, as well as the Houghs and the families into which they married in Ireland, in the 1800s, and hence where they were all buried, if they died in Ireland. David Stevens and I researched this but it was his wife Maree who found the crucial missing information online.
The centre of life in this part of Tipperary, North Riding, prior to the purges and depredation of Oliver Cromwell's forces was not the modern town of Cloughjordan but rather Modreeny. After the destruction of the old RC church and most of the homesteads of Catholics in that vicinity, a movement toward what is now Cloughjordan began to take place. But a Church of Ireland was erected in Modreeny on the same spot previously occupied by an ancient medieval RC church believed to have been destroyed by Cromwell. The Modreeny C of I church was only replaced by worshipers in that faith by the current church in Cloughjordan (St. Kieran's) in 1837.
The following information is found in the book In and out of School-In the home of the MacDonaghs by Roche Williams. Page 93: "Up to this time the only Catholic church in the area was located in Grawn, a mile and a half from the town (of Cloughjordan). During the Penal Days a small thatched chapel was situated there on the opposite side of the road from the present structure, beside what was then the priest's house; this house was in place up to forty years ago when it was demolished. In 1830, the then parish priest, Fr. Thomas Dunne built a new church at Grawn on a site provided by the O'Kennedys of Coolnamona. This was a spacious building, cruciform in shape, the place of worship for the Catholic people of Cloughjordan and the surrounding areas for many years, who travelled by horse, pony or donkey and trap or who walked along the many Mass-paths that linked the countryside to the place."
The townland name given is Grawn, although that townland name is no longer in use. I believe the name "Grawn" comes from another adjacent townland called Garraunorish.
There seems to be an absence of information on this church, or rather a great deal of conflicting information about it is given online. One thing is certain, before this church was built, it was the practice to bury Catholics as well as Church of Ireland adherents in the one cemetery that did exist, that surrounding the Modreeny church. And after the Grawn church came into being, the Catholics would have been buried close to it. So when one sees reference to a Catholic being buried in Modreeny cemetery, it is probably true, but they may also be buried in the area surrounding the ruins of the old RC Chapel of Grawn. Most likely earlier burials were at Modreeny and later ones at Grawn.
Only late in the 1800s did the centre of faith for RCs shift to the town of Cloughjordan with the construction of St. Michael's and St. John's. Still, even then, some of the burials of the older RC parishioners would have taken place in the old location in Grawn or even in Modreeny to be amongst their ancestors. C of I adherents had no choice, since the new church did not have a cemetery in the churchyard. They are still buried to this day in the Modreeny cemetery.
It is worthy of note that the Quinlisks of Behamore/Laughane/Silverstream, who were inter-related with the Houghs and Whelans by marriage, tended to bury their dead across the border in County Offaly at the cemetery of Kilcomin near Shinrone. The reason seems to be that it was closer than the cemeteries in Modreeny and Grawn. Only in the 1900s did some of them begin to be buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's and St. John's.
240124:
Yesterday I received a copy of "Kilcomin Graveyard County Offaly", 2023, by Stephen Callaghan. It contained images and transcripts of all of the Quinlisk gravestones I already had but some of the images and the transcripts are better so I am adding them in the appropriate places in the family tree. The gravestone erected in memory of Mary Egan by her husband Patrick Quinlisk unfortunately still gives no more insight into the identity of this Patrick Quinlisk than what I already had. There are well over a dozen Patrick Quinlisk's in the family tree and probably others I have never found in the records so this continues to be somewhat speculative.

A Quinlisk yet to be linked with the Cloughjordan clan, if indeed he is a part of it. Dunkerrin is close to the Tipp border and several of the Silverstream Quinlisks were buried in Offaly so it is plausible this man is a part of tha clan.

191107: I am only speculating that Patrick and Daniel were brothers and that their wives, Catherine and Mary Gleason/Gleeson were sisters based upon a preponderance of circumstantial evidence. This would need to be verified by hard data from church records etc., if available.

191213:
I'm judging from the fact of their marriage taking place in the parish church in Cloghjordan that this man is associated in some way or another with the Silverstream/Behamore clan but I have no evidence to support the connection so am simply leaving the couple here unattached for now.

It is now possible to see these church registers online on a number of websites including Ancestry. I viewed this marriage today and read it somewhat differently than previously:
"Feb. 20 [1835] Patt Quinlisk Margt. Ryan
Pt. Trady & Mary Toohey"
So, other than getting her forename corrected, I am no further ahead in discovering the identity of this Patt Quinlisk.

080821:
I found a marriage for a Patrick Quinlisk of Behamore to a Protestant named Judith Gaynor in the Cloughjordan register found on Ancestry. It occurred on Jan 27 1870. It shows he was of Behamore and she of Lower Grange. The witnesses were Patrick Quinlisk and Hanora Gleeson. The priest was P. O'Meara. Other than her name I know that she was Protestant because they had a son named Edward Christened in the same church on July 31 1874 and it was noted to be "conditionate". The witnesses to the Christening were John Quinlisk and Onny Tracy and the priest was John McKenna.
Whether this is the same Patrick is up in the air because there was at least one other Patrick of similar age in the parish at this time so I cannot ascertain which was the groom. I am recording this here rather than attaching the wife and son's name because of this doubt. But I will create a "new" Patrick Quinlisk with this wife and son and may in due course be able to merge this "new" Patrick with one of the two or three possibilities.
