Occupation: Farmer/Planter, 1836-1844, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
Owner: William and John Sanders Co-Owners of Schooner COUSINS, 1836-1837, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is believed that, as the name implies, William and John were cousins, the former the son of Daniel and the latter the son of John.
The Cousins (Reg. # S836040) was a Schooner built in St. Mary's Bay in 1836. John Sanders was the first shareholder and William the second. There were no others. Both co-owners were shown as Farmer/Planters in Ferryland on the registration.

Year Registered under these owners - 1836

Robert Carter enlightens us as to the fate of this vessel:
Thursday, 26 January 1837
" The boat, Cousins, sold to William Niele of Fermeuse by Mr. Holdsworth for J. and W. Sanders for £ 210, a boat of 41 tons built last winter."
John and William Sanders, who were cousins as the name of their jointly owned and built vessel implies, were the original registered owners but, for reasons unexplained here, chose to sell this vessel. The intermediary in the sale was Mr. Holdsworth is undoubtedly Henry Holdsworth, who was then responsible for the family business in Newfoundland, though that business was rapidly declining at this late stage of the family' s long involvement in the cod fish trade and related economic dealings. He is mentioned by his Christian name several times elsewhere in the diaries. Why he would have taken a hand in the sale of this vessel is not made clear. It is possible that the Sanders family was so deeply in debt to him that this arrangement was agreed to avoid the all too frequent court actions arising from such indebtedness of planters and fishermen to merchants. Occupation: Master of the THETIS owned by John Jennings, 2 Jul 1836, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. 180720:
Robert Carter's diary also refers to him as the Master of the THETIS which is owned solely by John Jennings:
Saturday 2 July 1836:
J. M. Rendell came here in the night in the THETIS, John Sanders, Master, from St. John's, left this evening. Residence: On the North Side near Cold East Point, 1840-1844, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
Alt. Death: Cir 1845, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Father: John Sanders 305 Mother: Catherine 305
Notes
General:
270520:
I am simply placing this person in the most logical family for now based exclusively on his presence on Voters Lists from 1840-1844. If this is indeed a new son of John and Catherine then some or many of the court events now attributed to his father could pertain to the son.
180620:
I have also decided that this must be the John Sanders who is reported to have co-owned the Schooner Cousins with his cousin William Sanders, the son of Daniel.
180720:
Robert Carter's diary also refers to him as the Master of the THETIS which is owned solely by John Jennings:
Saturday 2 July 1836:
J. M. Rendell came here in the night in the THETIS, John Sanders, Master, from St. John's, left this evening. 307

General:
020906: In the 1800 Census for Ferryland this family appears along with that of Daniel Sanders and Mary Carter. It seems likely from the common surname and the ages of their children that John and Daniel are brothers.I am making this leap for now pending more concrete information to support this relationship.
John SandersCatherine William 22 John 17 James 15 Richard 9 Mary 20 Catharine 11 Sarah 3 ½
010520:
Kevin believes that this may have been a mixed marriage and that all of their children and descendants were raised RC, which would explain the fact that some burials at least are in RC Cemeteries. But he also assumes that John and Catherine are buried in the old non-denominational cemetery for much the same reason rather than the Forge Hill Anglican Cemetery. No one has ever recorded a headstone for either of them however.
090520:
Kevin lists a dozen court related events that he gleaned from entries on the NGB website collected originally by Ray Curran. In most citations he was a jury member but there were a few in which he was a party to the case:
Ferryland Surrogate Court Records - Late 1700's
August 25, 1784 - Lowen, Michael - Sued this person for ill usage: - Saunders, John
September 23, 1786 - Saunders, John - Member of jury in Leigh and Co. vs Larey
April 4, 1793 - Sanders, John - Member of jury in Brien vs Drauhan
September 23, 1795 - Saunders, John - Jury member in Murphy vs Dauton and Whealon.
Ferryland District - Surrogate Court Records - (ca 1800 - 1820's
April 15, 1816 - Sanders, John - Merchants determine current year supplies, price and demand.
March 3, 1819 - Sanders, John - Juror in Rentoul vs Morrison.
November 1, 1819 - Sanders, John - Juror in Evoy vs Callihan trial.
January 21, 1820 - Sanders, John - Juror in Gallivan vs Tree
Ferryland - District Court Actions - Late 1700's to Early 1800's
September 25, 1786 Sanders, John - Jury member in Leigh vs Larey.
September 20, 1806 Sanders, John - Member of the jury in the Power vs Deringwater case.
March 13, 1802 Sanders, John - Member of the jury in Hogan vs Kerney.
January 1, 1803 Sanders, John - Granted a liquor licence for Ferryland.
I believe that it is possible that some of the later court records pertain to a possible son of the same name who was found in Voters Lists on the North Side up until 1945 and who cannot otherwise be placed. Or possibly to another known son who was more generally referred to in court records as John W. Saunders/Sanders or J. W. Saunders/Sanders but who in some instances may have been referred to simply as John or J. Saunders/Sanders.

Owner: Boat owner, vessel name not given, 18 Oct 1835, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. On page 159 of Vol. 1
"Richard Sanders left in his boat last night for St. John's."
Most likely this was a small, unregistered vessel. His name does not appear in the ACSP records of ship owners. Owner: Either owner or co-owner of The BROTHERS, 5 Mar 1836, Ferryland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Saturday, 5 March 1836
When the Brothers was launched in 1835 it was noted that the name of the registrant in that year was unknown though Carter indicated it was one of the Sanders family. Here he mentions that Richard Sanders is associated with the vessel, though not necessarily the owner: "Went on board the Brothers at the request of Richard Sanders and surveyed her equipment, found her sufficiently found in anchors, cables, etc." This does not necessarily mean that Richard was the sole owner. It could very well have been his in partnership with other members of his family including William and John who were known to be vessel owners and Masters. On October 9 1827, residents of Aquaforte signed a memorial protesting against an intended increase on goods imported into Newfoundland, in particular duties on Spirits. Robert 'Sanders' signed this petition as one of "the principal, but poor Inhabitants" of that settlement. This memorial, signed by Robert and fourteen other heads of families, was then forwarded to Lord Goderich, Secretary of State for the Colonies.

There is no record of his burial in either the Anglican or the RC cemeteries in Aquaforte, nor for that matter the non-denominational or Anglican (Forge Hill) cemetery in Ferryland. General:
180703: George LeMessurier's family tree of the Carters, Morrys and LeMessuriers indicates this Robert has many descendants but doesn't give his wife's name nor the name of any of the progeny.
281119:
Kevin Reddigan also has an extensive family tree for this person but also has no name for his spouse. What appears here for his descendants is based on Kevin's information and that of one of his descendants, Bill Saunders in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
This is what Kevin says about his likely birth date:
"Ferryland Census of 1800 shows Robert was 17 (b. 1782/1783), however the C. of E. death records says he was 82 when he died in 1858; indicating he was born in 1785/1786."
Note that Kevin is as bad at math as I am. If he was 82 he would have been born in 1776.
