050909: This person is mentioned among the births, marriages and deaths recorded in the family bible by Joseph Wheeler or Daddy Jack. This is verification of the record at PANL that I recorded in 2001. There is no mention of her elsewhere and she is added as a sort of last minute afterthought among the births in the bible, probably because she died soon after birth.

Information from Evelyn Wheeler ca. 2000: Raised 5 children (2 boys and 3 girls) on widow's pension in Montr้al after husband killed in WWI

28/08/01: Baptismal Record viewed by C. Morry at PANL 28/08/01 showed priest as M. J. Clarke and sponsors as Edward Gosse and Margaret Gosse (Mary Hannah's brother and sister) and noted father was Protestant.

14/12/02: Newfoundland Gen Web site posted the entire records for births of St.Thomas's Anglican Church from 1867-1892 in October 2002. It was only then that I realised Joseph and Mary Hannah covered both bases by having their children baptised in the Roman Catholic Church in Torbay AND the Anglican Church in St. John's. Note the significant discrepancy on date of birth and baptism. Needs to be verified with Vital Statistics. It would appear that the children were baptised at the Anglican church first and then subsequently re-baptised at the Catholic Church, probably under threat of excommunication for they and their mother. Also note different spelling of first name in the RC and Anglican records.

111009: Although the family bible of Joseph Wheeler (or Daddy Jack) contains numerous other errors, I am accepting the date of birth given there. I suspect that the dates given at the two churches are dates of christening/baptism, not birth.

260710: Her abode at time of birth was given as Virginia Estates so the family had moved there evidently from Torbay Rd. at that time.

250313:

Mom visited her aunt Maud and family during the war. Maud's husband was killed in WWI according to Mom and her aunt Maud somehow scraped out a living raising her family after that in Montreal. Strange that she did not choose to return to Newfoundland at that point where she had family who might assist her at least.

WHEELER, Otto E. - Passed away peacefully but suddenly on Sunday, April 01, 2001, Otto Wheeler, aged 79 years. Predeceased by his loving wife Agnes, his infant son, his grandson David and his sister Muriel. Left with fond and loving memories his daughter Joan; son John (wife Brenda); grandchildren Andrew, Julia and Jeanette; sisters: Evelyn (Tom) Morry and Ruth (Grover) Fugate, a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation hours on Tuesday from 10-12 noon, 2-5 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Funeral service from St. Thomas Anglican Church, Military Road on Wednesday, April 04, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road.
